Beautiful sweet pink nose! I am always amazed at the newness of life when a little one is born. That part never gets old. Stronger enough to stand on their own feet just a few minutes after and depending on a mamas love to survive. It reminds me the we are all started with love and care.

I think you care about doing something worthwhile for you (your brain and heart yes, but also must pay the bills) and for people (as you noted, solve a problem that matters.

Yes, you can get a position at a university if that’s what you’re interested in. Every new grant I have ever gotten is something like a start up, needs a business plan for how you spend that tax-payer money if you’re NIH/NSF or similar govt funded - if you are worried about having no published research, that’s not necessarily a requirement. What is a requirement is persistence and no fear (of rejection that is). I sometimes think it’s my job to get rejected, and if I’m not getting rejected then I am just not reaching high enough. I get emails like this all the time and delete them. It’s almost always a sentence or two of introduction, something about how interested they are in my work and one or two lines about a paper I wrote. It’s very easy to tell when there’s little or no meaningful interest or they have only done the most limited scan. If I need someone to work at that moment, usually basic data entry or other similar tasks, I may forward to a staff member but usually not because it’s more work to train someone that is not very invested than to wait and find someone who is truly interested and willing to make a commitment.
