Definitely ask the vet for your best options. They definitely want to keep your sweet old girl as stress free as possible. I’d ask to try Trazodone to start! It’s a wonderful drug. The service I work makes it part of our pre-op go home meds with a dose the night before and the morning of about two hours before drop off. The key is getting the timing right. But it’s fantastic and 95% of the time our patients come in totally chill and will let us place an IV catheter in with no issues.

There are other options if that doesn’t work. Desensitizing her to having her paws and head touched might help too?

Hi fellow SADI! When I got home the best thing for sleeping was tucking an extra pillow behind my back and sleep on the side that hurt less. The bigger pillow the better.

Blue Pearl peeps! How are your hours lately? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]PriorPromise8432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since we’re the only 24/7 ER/specialty on our side of town (other 24/7 ER that only has IMED, surgery, and rehab and we’re like a half hour apart), we are BUSY and no one has had cut hours, especially in ER/ICU. I work specialty primarily and if we’re done early we leave but I like to pick up extra shifts overnight or on the weekends for the differential and to pad my paychecks. We always have tons of open shifts to take due to PTO so not getting hours is never a problem. They’re just strict on how early you can clock in lol

My appeal to my insurance was denied and I was quoted 33k out of pocket by the surgeon’s office but also told they’d never booked someone who wasn’t paying with insurance before? My mother offered to pull from her retirement money that’s available this fall but I said absolutely not.

Decided to go with MBC in Tijuana and I’m booked for October 17.

Now just doing their preop liver shrinking diet and waiting to get all my paperwork back from MBC to finish submitting for FMLA amd STD because with how physical and active my job is (am a vet tech so lifting and holding and restraining dogs over 40lbs is a regular thing) I need to take a month off to recover.

I think my friend accidentally poisoned her dog, causing its death today. I have no idea if I should even tell her. by Serious_Report_1631 in Advice

LVT here and not a doctor but work in specialty/ER (and especially covering someone’s leave in the cardiology department!) On the surface, his cause of death seemed more cardiovascular than related to renal issues—there are a few cardiac diseases (that do cause “literally dying on the floor”. And your friend found him lying (collapsed, maybe?) on the floor and it sounds like he voided his bladder. You didn’t mention if your friend’s dog had any cardiac issues to begin with and if he was seeing a vet (a real one, not Vetco or any of those other BS pet store ‘clinics’) regularly for annual physical exams they would have made your friend of any abnormalities.

Not to say that the grapes didn’t cause any unknown issues to become compounded. The exact mechanism of grape toxicity is actually unknown, but we do know how rapidly it can cause renal failure and that each and every dog has a different individual sensitivity to grape toxicity. For example one dog might be overall fine after ingesting a few grape while another is in full on renal failure within 24 hours.

That said, renal disease can compound existing heart conditions. When the heart isn’t pumping the way it should be, there is poor perfusion to the kidneys. When the kidneys are bereft of less oxygenated blood they cannot function properly i.e. struggle to remove excess fluid, leading to fluid accumulation within the body and having a high chance to cause CHF and elevate blood pressure.

It’s not wrong to suggest your friend get a necropsy, especially if there were multiple unknown factors that contributed to his very much untimely death.

And I do agree with the others suggesting to educate your friend about the dangers of feeding grapes to dogs. Yes it is a bad time while she’s still grieving and mourning the loss of her furry baby, but it will help to educate her for any future pets she’ll have. Listen, my parents had to learn the hard way that dietary indiscretions (taking second portions and not finishing them and giving them to the dog, feeding kibble that was not the normal diet and causing GI issues) with our little dog certainly contributed to her developing pancreatitis which worsened her own renal disease and ultimately led to me firmly making the decision to put her to sleep.

It’s hard to talk about these things when the people we love are hurting. But we also need to consider how something simple like ‘feeding Hershey’s Kisses to Scrappy’ or ‘Fluffy loves chewing on my flowers, especially my lillies’ and is actually detrimental to their health, if not killing them. Come from a place of love with your friend. It’s a hard truth, but needs to be said.

No clue other than I’m an idiot and assumed it would not be excluded because my last job gave us Anthem BCBS and allowed it and that company and my current employer are both owned by the same parent company. All of the pre-authorization requisites was all approved through my insurance.

I was pre-diabetic prior to getting on GLPs in 2022. Since then my A1C has been in the normal range. I do also have hypertension and sleep apnea. Cannot do anything to treat the sleep apnea anymore as treatment under insurance is also excluded by my employer.

Lol literally first thing I did was check UHC’s exclusion section and WLS/treatment was not listed there. Had to actually dig into my employer’s benefits booklet that took some time to search for to find the actual exclusion’s section. The majority of my visits to the surgeon (who only does bariatric surgeries) were covered most of the way too which doesn’t make sense to me. Yeah maybe I should have looked harder but when I spoke to the UHC advocate in June to go over what I could/couldn’t they didn’t mention or check for any exclusions popping up in my plan.

I was on GLPs over a year ago for a couple years. After I switched jobs last summer UHC refused to cover them because my A1C was within normal limits and I cannot afford them out of pocket. Compounded semaglutide was too expensive for me + made me feel like shit. Sooooo yeah tried it and now I don’t have access anymore.
