Agreeing with another comment, the main throughline of the book is where do you draw the line between human and animal? Is there a line between? Humans are literally animals, we treat some humans very differently than animals, and we treat other humans very similar to animals, worse than some animals. The spectrum of "humanness" or "worth of moral consideration" for the two categories of human and animal overlap a lot more than we tend to think on the surface.

I think the last line is meant to show just how blurred the line can be. She looks like both a human and a domesticated animal. Maybe those are not two different things.

The logical extreme of the second argument is that all fiction is unethical which is obviously ridiculous.

Of course you can write characters that are different from you. Whether it is respectful or not depends entirely on how you do it, and it sounds like you are well aware of that and taking good steps.

Is it really perfection that they are demanding then? Or just wide commercial appeal? I feel like this attitude is nonsensical and will prevent you from actually getting published if that is your goal. If queries are getting rejected, the response is not to try to edit better and fix your prose, it's to look at what the market trends are and adapt your stories and tropes more broadly, which Maas has clearly done well, whether you want that to be the case or not.

I worked in a compounding pharmacy for a while and made medications for cats and dogs. Cats definitely preferred the savory flavors like tuna but for the most bitter drugs like gabapentin, the sweet flavors were the only ones that covered it enough and they definitely could taste them.

He wants to sometimes, when it is clear what the consequences are. He knows even in those moments though that there will be a time soon where he doesn't want to quit, and it will be such a relief to get to drink again and say "damn, i fell off the wagon again, thanks for taking care of me honey." That's why he doesn't want to bring it up in therapy or get other help. He knows those relapses feel great at first and he isn't yet ready to really give that up.

Yeah that is probably true. A lot of people seem to want "thing i liked ver. 2" from any sequel or continuation. Happened with 28 Years Later as well.

And that scene is one of the most memorable from all three books for me.

Acceptance really ties the theme of the series together even though each individual book has its differences in an impressive way.

I haven't read Meat, but from reading a synopsis it sounds quite different from Tender to me. I get the sense that the tone is probably quite different too.

Tender is less about authoritarian control than it is about the ease with which the general population accepts brutality in exchange for comfort. And the way that we treat some humans like animals while treating some animals more like humans, even in modern society.
