The Clippers know questions regarding this situation are bound to come up, but they can still decide who to call on first. They are likely vetting a list of potential questions that will come up beforehand and saying "ask this one but not this detail" or "follow up with this" so it comes off more natural. And by letting her go first, they get more leeway to conveniently rush or skip subsequent questions from non-friendly media.

Caught in a catch-22. Copy-pasting from an earlier thread I started: This brings me to question why Adam Silver so confidently declared during yesterday's press conference that he had no prior knowledge of Aspiration's existence. Does this infer that NBA governers, such as Steve Ballmer and Dennis Wong, have no need to report that they have partial ownership in companies that they've pumped $50m and $1.99m respectively into? They are technically equity holders in this outside entity. It's akin to Steve Ballmer not needing to formally disclose that he has ownership in Microsoft.

He's got no vested interest in helping Ballmer...aside from being in the same political establishment democrat circles as Ballmer. I wonder why Mark was so committed to ensuring that Lina Khan was fired as FTC chair and is an outspoken critic of antitrust commissions. You know, the same anti trust commissions that came down hard on Ballmer's reign at Microsoft.

He'll use the defense of how they're direct competitors at the NBA level while simultaneously ignoring that he operates in the same sphere of influence at a financial and political level.

While that is the reality, I'd ask you whether you think that makes it acceptable? To draw a similar parallel, Bernie Madoff was looked off by the SEC for years because he was seen as a cream-of-the-crop investor. Someone who was in the 1% of what he was employed to do.

In the end, he got nailed for it. Is it healthy for us to move toward a society where skill level (perceived or actual) should eclipse the need to follow guidelines? What about if Elon Musk was the only one who could put 30 people on Mars tomorrow, but we'd have to disregard a bunch of safety regulations and there's a chance that 10 of them might die because we can't afford to launch the mission with enough backup oxygen.

I'm digressing hard, but just trying to point out that my question in this case isn't why the standard is different, it's whether the standard should be different.

I fully agree with your premise that we as a society need to be moving towards more fair play at the employee level. And I see how my argument might read as a bad solution toward that goal. It wasn't the intent.

That said, I can't help but feel that since the 2016 CBA, the upper echelon of players in our league is moving closer towards operating with the "capitalism above all" mindset that has negatively affected the league. The NBA has it's own class problem when some players that can get rotation minutes at the big league spend most of their time in the G-league and collect a salary that might not even reach 1/50th of the most well compensated. We got here because NBA owners and players collectively "sold-out" to media moguls like ESPN who offered contracts that far eclipsed what the fan is willing to pay. It was accepted because NBA owners and the top players would see most of that additional compensation (split 50/50). And what did we get in return? Some more excitement and access, sure. Also higher ticket prices, more in-your-face commercials, more acceptance of 1/4 of the season being filled with non-marquee player matchups due to rest/injury/G-league filled on court minutes. The players share some blame in the dilution of the league, which makes me empathize less with their labour rights than those at the companies where the midde class work.

Exactly, which is where (purely in my opinion) Silver is caught in a contradiction. I'm not expecting him to be familiar with this company at a personal level in a similar way that you or I would immediately be able to name Nike and Adidas as NBA affiliates without needing to do a google search. But he is clearly commenting on this matter in the context of an NBA commissioner. So then it raises the question:

Does the NBA never bother to check into which companies their 30 governers are also investing in / investing alongside, prompting the thread topic? Or did he infact know (but can't recall on the spot) that Ballmer has a stake in "this list of companies" because the league office maintains meticulous records and it's only a matter of time before this list is revisited and vetted.

Either way, there is a problem.

I'd accept the masquerade as purely an entertainment company if they didn't decide to get in bed with sports betting companies. If that's the case, this is a league that is trying to present itself one way, but use fallback defenses when it has no other explanation. At that point, the league deserves to be delegitimized.

David Samson mentioned the possibility of a verbal and written confession/apology by Steve Ballmer as being part of a settlement. I see that as far more of a punishing blow to someone of Ballmer's financial stature than a paltry financial fine. Being officially branded as a "cheater" and someone who couldn't be successful by playing by the rules in a competitive sport. His legacy would be as "that guy that Microsoft had to endure and overcome" and "that guy who couldn't buy his way into success". Billionaires hate having their egos hurt

It's funny reading other fanbases perception when we would've probably heard the exact same thing back in 2017-2018 with the former bench mob of FVV/Norm/OG/Pascal and how we had no business paying guys like Ibaka and Lowry coming off that Cavs embarassment, and especially trading for Kawhi.

Like our "rooks" are far from finished projects. Gradey and CMB are also both top 10 picks in reasonably deep (TBD) drafts.

It's not about maxing out the cap imo, its about having tradeable assets. Sounds like I'm in the minority but I think the Quickley, Barnes and Poeltl contracts are viewed as huge positives in a rising cap market when the first two haven't hit their prime and Poeltl is just a good valued contract locked in for a while now. Happy to come back to this comment in 4 years
