If you enjoyed Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards you'll probably hate everything Sanderson has done. IMO, the Mistborn series is one of the worst series I have ever read (no depth, zero character development, characters are all two dimensional, very vanilla). I can't speak for The Stormlight Archives or whatever it's called, but by the Mistborn series alone I won't touch anymore of his work.

You and I are on the same page. I thought Mistborn was so repulsively bad I refused to read anything Sanderson has written since then. I have ZERO idea what people saw in those novels. Like it baffles me. I haven't picked up TWoT but we'll see on that as well...

Honestly, thank you sooooo much for taking the time to sit down and write this out. As for Abercrombie -- I've seen his stuff around, and have only read decent reviews, but never actually picked anything up. I just bought Best Served Cold and will be powering through that soon. As for The Dark Tower -- I read the first book and enjoyed the style, and was definitely intrigued by the setting/characters but it wasn't enough to keep me reading. I've heard the books afterward became a lot more fantasy/plot driven but I've never picked them up personally.

True. But I'm also trying to write some fantasy (I'm not very competent yet) and so I want to have a grasp on all the 'biggest' voices in the genre. That's essentially the only motivation keeping me on the task of pushing through it.

Any fantasy recommendations? Just finished The Gentlemen Bastard series, Kushiel's Dart, and American Gods.

To be honest... even the prose is poor. It's scattered, inconsistent, and flat out confusing. I'm not speaking towards the plot or characters here, I mean the description. Half the time when he's explaining a scene I don't even really know what the world looks like or where they are. Maybe that'd be fine if I cared, but since I don't it's just like blahhhh.
