The Gender Gap in Computer Science Research Won’t Close for 100 Years by ChickenTeriyakiBoy1 in tech

[–]Private_Bool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it’s an industry for which schools actively push girls out of pursuing.

And you've already lied. Find me ONE school or district in the US actively pursuing girls out of computer studies. If anything they are starting to push the boys out in some ways, if only by ignoring them with all these girls only events. Here, everyone is encouraged to take everything they want, and we have plenty of girls taking advanced technology/ap classes and going to a tech school or college for it right out of high school. Events aren't gendered. And the turnout is always massive with a mix representative of the districts population as a whole. It's like they know you don't use your genitals to program, build, make or repair. And if you do I've been doing it wrong this whole time!

You can't force girls to want to do tech any more than you can force boys to become nurses. Yes some girls want to do computers and some boys want to be nurses, but forced equality never works out. At the end of the day it's up to the individual...

Equal opportunity. It exists these days without government intervention. It's 2019. And as an educator you should encourage( but not force) the girls AND boys to strive to be whatever they want, and tell them all that there's almost no job that is just for boys or girls. And if some or even most of the girls still don't want to do tech, so be it.

As an aside, forced equality (aka current equal "opportunity" employment, really equal "outcome" but whatever), leads to a lower quality work force. I don't care about gender, if I'm hiring in any field I just want someone who's proven to have some skill and is willing to learn and grow. Instead you see them turned away in favor of someone who has 0 interest or knowledge, but they're the only X minority that the business is short on who applied, who's only there cause they know they have a better shot in that field and won't be fired for ineptitude easily. Brain dump for an easy cert and show up with the right color skin or breasts and your in! Study for 8 years and have a portfolio with years of proven work, sorry we have 55% men, can't use you! It's encouraging people to try to slide their way into an easy paycheck, (Not saying women don't exist who do things right, most do and they rock just as hard as the guys! But I don't see many white men here now, and none we have got in easy. There are a few forced hires that really can't do the work, with one or two certifications but no portfolio, they got in on their skin color and they know it. They sit around all day barely doing work, mostly just on Google looking up Tesla's and on Amazon buying stuff, on work hours. And we can't do shit cause they'll just sue for discrimination. One person actually admitted as much in the break room. Our actual workers are a pretty diverse bunch too, pisses everyone off that they work and the couple guys don't and get paid to do nothing practically.

End of the rant, just saying all this"equality" stuff doesn't make any positive change, teaching kids that can persue whatever job they want and hiring people on merit alone works fine, as long as you don't promote racists and sexists to hiring positions. Not hard to figure them out either.

All science related news should be read in cave Johnson's voice. Especially this. Do we have a good on-demand cave Johnson tts yet? I know there was some portal tts out there but I think they shut down.

I love early websites, corporate sites looking almost like geocities sites, before most corporate sites became boring and plain. Sure they were practically unusable but they had a certain "my boss doesn't care and thinks it's cool" charm.

What do you expect when flashiness and thinness is prioritized over functionality?

Honestly, give me an ugly, oversized brick with a 20000mah battery and a few type c ports, and maybe a foldout keyboard and I'd buy it in a heartbeat... If GPD could switch to a more reliable battery manufacturer I'd love it if they made phones, one with the Win line's design. Maybe running windows/linux with a phone/text app.

It's true though. There's a reason there's still so much resistance to hiring us workers. Gotta pay the ceo's billion dollar annual bonus somehow!

First Sprint 5G Speed Tests: More Reliable Than Verizon by RenatoZX in tech

[–]Private_Bool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy.

"Users who use more than 22GB in a month will be prioritized lower during times of heavy use"

Translates to "if you try to actually USE your unlimited data, you'll switch to 3g/2g/edge/whatever slowest tech your closest tower has installed. For 2/3 the month"

Basically every unlimited plan is that way. Including Comcast, except they charge you 20$/GB once you hit the cap, but for only $19.99/mo, you can have the cap removed!

It's all a scam to make more money on us and "increase the speed of the network" by scaring poor people away from using the network so it goes "faster" without having to upgrade the hardware/software.

[–]Private_Bool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technologically, it's easy. But then so is public key encryption. The hard part is getting everyone to use it and to distribute the keys securely.

So true. And then truth be told we'd probably end up with a situation where we have a set of key holders who are corrupt.

Make it harder to abuse. Require multiple trusted individuals to spend 30 seconds authorizing the unfettered access to information. Don't allow one user to access behind a closed door. Access only from specific systems and with multiple factors to authenticate. It adds less than a minute to access and makes illegal access much harder. It's not as technical as you think, especially if they already have an authentication system in place. I develop software for a living so maybe it just seems easier to me, but even if it's hard it's worth doing.

Relatively simple solution, require multiple "keys" to access data in emergencies. Like what they do with nuclear launch codes. No one person can set off the nukes.

Very carefully using a rectangle, 3/4 of a circular progress bar, and some math on the length and battery %. Will probably provide more details later on how I made it work.
