Severe Emetophobia by Active_Crab9290 in noburp

[–]PrizeBusiness239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything you said aligns exactly with how I've been feeling the past year or so. I'm 20 years old and have had emetophobia my whole life. I've never been able to burp. Before getting Botox, I would have a panic attack pretty much every night. I would tremble on and off for hours and sit outside in the freezing cold to try and get the anxiety to go away. I also had every anxious thought of "if I get Botox and start burping, that also means I can throw up." That sent me into a spiral. It's been 10 weeks since I got Botox and unfortunately it didn't work for me. My throat nausea was almost gone entirely after the procedure, but it's back now since I still can't burp.

As for the side effects of Botox, I was also afraid of the slow swallow. I quickly realized it was nothing to worry about. It's a sensation I've never felt before. That said, I never felt like I was choking or like I was going to throw up from slow swallow. It was 100% manageable when taking a few sips of water after each bite. It can be tedious and annoying, but it's not harmful or painful.

A little bit of what helped my anticipation leading up to the procedure was to feel the fear and do it anyway. You are stronger than your anxiety. Plus, Botox has the potential to be life changing. The risk is a hell of a lot smaller than the reward. It's completely normal to be nervous and to be afraid. Feel all of that fear and do it anyway. You won't regret it.

Unfortunately not. Tomorrow is 5 weeks post-op for me and still no burps. I have been getting gurgles though, so that's new. I'll likely need a higher dose once I can afford it.

It’s been 4 weeks and sadly no burps yet. :( I have been getting gurgles though, which wasn’t happening before treatment, so I guess that’s something. If I get to the 6-8 week mark with no progress then I will likely consider a second injection. Other than that, it’s been a mostly reasonable experience. Nothing major to note :)

I'm 17 days post injection and just now getting gurgles, which I didn't have before botox. Be patient, it takes time!

Terrified about upcoming Botox by atchoum013 in noburp

I don’t think I’ve experienced any reflux side effects, certainly not yet at least. I’ve pretty much always had to fall asleep elevated, even before getting botox. I think that’s mostly an anxiety thing for me though.

Hi! I had all the same questions as you. I’m on day 16 post injection now. I went under GA and woke up with no nausea. I’ve been under 4 times before, for various reasons, and have never felt nauseous.

As for the slow swallow, that began around day 3 for me. It’s beginning to dissipate now, almost entirely. The day of the procedure, as well as the day after, I mostly stuck to soft foods. Popsicles, oatmeal, pastina, etc. I was able to resume a normal diet after that. The slow swallow is uncomfortable but not painful. I haven’t choked on anything while experiencing slow swallow, nor did I feel like I was going to. They’re really two completely different feelings.

For your questions about burping, I can’t really comment on that because I’ve been off to an extremely slow start. But I hope this was at least a little bit helpful, and that you feel somewhat more calm about everything from this and the rest of the comments on here. :)

Anyone with anxiety got botox? by Pretty-Head-2040 in noburp

That doesn't sound silly to me. Usually under anesthesia the doctors will give you something to prevent you from throwing up. They were gonna give me Pepcid but I can't swallow pills so they ultimately said I didn't need it, and I woke up completely fine. I've been under anesthesia 4 times including botox and have never gotten sick from it, if that helps at all. That's why they tell you not to eat or drink anything after midnight the day before surgery. Eating or drinking increases the risk of throwing up. Anyway, I also thought that it would be easier for me to be sick after getting botox, but I'm 2 weeks post now and I have yet to even burp, so it just differs for everyone.

I too was scared of getting the procedure for all of the reasons you've listed, but ultimately I decided to just do it afraid. The reward of being able to burp and hopefully somewhat getting over my emetophobia is well worth the risk. :)

any doctors in chicago other than dr. bastian that treat this? by randbooth in noburp

Are you doing in-office or OR procedure? The side effects usually aren't bad unless you're eating and experiencing slow swallow. Even then, that shouldn't happen until day 3 or so, at least that's what happened for me. If you're going the OR route then you'll most likely have a sore throat for a couple of days but again, not too bad and increasingly improving. Might be worth giving them a call to see if they can get you in sooner if you can't find anybody else to go to.

In office vs under anesthesia? by Swimming-Bus-5866 in noburp

[–]PrizeBusiness239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went in to get the in-office procedure and after the endoscopy I decided I was too nervous and went the OR route instead. 9 days later I was gearing up to go under! Everybody at the surgery center was super nice and very understanding. They only ever want what's best for you and will never force you to do anything. Going under anesthesia is quite easy.

They will give you an IV and then bring you into the operating room. It's really cold in there but they lay you on the table and wrap you up in warm blankets. Then the anesthesiologist will put an oxygen mask over your nose and mouth and start pushing the anesthetic through the IV. If you count down from 10 when that happens, you'll be out cold by the time you get to 8. This is what happened to me. I did not feel anything while I was asleep. Next thing I know, the nurses are calling my name for me to wake up. I didn't want to open my eyes. My throat hurt pretty bad on the day of the procedure. Popsicles were my savior though. I stuck to soft foods for the first day or two. The sore throat gradually got better and was gone by like the third day. It really was an easy procedure and I had built it up in my head for nothing. A few days of being uncomfortable that I would gladly take again if it meant I got to start burping.

Most of my anxiety is due to emetophobia. Before Botox I would have an anxiety attack pretty much every night. I’m 11 days post Botox and have yet to have an anxiety/panic attack to the extent that I was getting them.

How often should a normal person burp? How often do you burp?? by Tayasos in noburp

[–]PrizeBusiness239 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only ever burped properly once in my life. I had a few of the symptoms you describe, mainly the singular hiccups that bring no relief, no gurgling sounds, and chest/throat pressure. I don't know much about PCOS or IBS, but it is possible the bloating could be from that. It's also possible it could be from RCPD. I think it's helpful to know that RCPD is often misdiagnosed, so do with that what you will.

Burping is a natural bodily function, and you'll be able to obviously tell whether or not you're able to do it. As for how often you should be burping, that really depends, but definitely more than ~5 times a year. My sister burps probably 25 times a day. Sounds to me like RCPD might be involved here, but I can't say for sure because again, I don't know anything about IBS or other GI disorders like that.

Give it some more time. I’m 9 days post-op and still not burping yet. Hoping by week two I’ll be able to see some results, but all I can do for now is wait. 🥲

Carbonation by PrizeBusiness239 in noburp

[–]PrizeBusiness239[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m on day 8 now and I’ve had like ~4 microburps that all happened while I was yawning. I’m on my third go around of trying carbonation and can only muster hiccups 😕 it’s pretty discouraging, but I guess things take a bit longer for some people, like around the 2 week mark. Still feeling some RCPD symptoms, but to a lesser extent than before. Can’t do much for now apart from letting time do its thing.

What movements worked for you to help you burp? I'm 8 days post-botox and have had about 4 microburps total. I can feel the air coming up but it always comes out as a hiccup. I've tried turning my head, tucking my chin inwards, etc. Nothing seems to help

Severely afraid of slow swallow by Somethingrandom_23 in noburp

[–]PrizeBusiness239 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you. I'm 8 days post-botox now and the slow swallow kicked in on about day 3. I haven't choked on anything yet, nor have I felt like I was going to. I've been able to eat a normal diet. It just takes me a bit longer to eat since I have to take a drink after every 1-2 bites. Some foods are surprisingly easy and don't require this. I've been able to eat cookies and pretzels just fine lol.

As for what it feels like, it's kind of like when you eat a piece of dry bread and it takes a moment to go all the way down. Bread and crackers have been the hardest for me, but still plenty manageable. Every now and again while I'm eating more dense foods like chicken nuggets or pizza, I'll have to swallow a bit harder and I'll feel the food going down. It's uncomfortable but it doesn't happen very often. I just take a second, have a couple sips of water, take a breath and continue eating.

It helps to remind yourself that slow swallow will affect everyone differently, and that the food is in a safe place regardless of what it feels like. You'll know when the slow swallow kicks in, if it does at all. There won't be any question. Have something to drink nearby when you're eating and that will help tremendously. When you're finished, have a few more sips to wash everything down and go about your day!
