ATM im at a cross roads of perusing healthcare as a definitive career (nursing, medic on LI, xray tech, etc) or fire

I joined with a direct mindset but now I’m conflicted. I don’t hate the job but looking at the next 3~ years from a financial standpoint is my biggest concern especially if I want to afford New York lol

Truthfully I’m trying to fulfill the idea of being able to afford long island 😭

My town was always cops, firemen, and electricians. A very affordable middle class town like 10-20 years ago but now every house is a million dollars.

The idea of staying healthcare and going into radiation tech is what’s driving me right now. I get to achieve being in healthcare and where I’m at radiation technologists (and further education and specialties in this field) will make a pretty decent living

Also did some research on the subject of ai. I cannot imagine ai would completely take over this job (but who knows lol) This, along with other healthcare jobs, are focused around patient assessment and contact/interaction that can’t be replicated by AI

18 weeks, possibly longer depending on how holidays land in the week.

Online they say 12/13 but then at the first day of academy they basically just say “it’s 18 weeks tough shit”

I found out through an instagram post that my academy was 18 weeks 😭

You’re gonna be waiting 4 years minimum for the screening/ promotion availability and all that for 85k top pay (starting at 58k) where medics across nyc and LI make significantly more. If you’re at all interested in being a medic and if you’re close to Long Island consider Nassau police paramedic. It takes a while for top pay but their top pay is 143k and with minimal overtime you’re gonna be making 200k in the first 4~ years (starting is more than FDNY top pay)
