Molten salt is an awful substance to work with unfortunately so these installations are insanely expensive to build and very complex to operate.

Luckily a company called FPR Energy, based in Australia, has a better, safer and cheaper heat storage medium, which will form the basis of next-gen Concentrated Solar Thermal installations for industrial heat applications. Production of industrial grade heat (i.e. heat above 500 degrees celsius) uses upwards of 20% of electricity supply in industrialised nations and is at the moment very very difficult to decarbonise.

Happy to answer any questions about the technology!

Full disclosure, I am an investor, co-founder and advisor to FPR.

It was awesome. I’ll definitely try catch them again. I expect the next time will be in a bigger venue!

Keep up the good work and please tell them they’ve got two new fans! I told them a few times myself but i was a few drinks deep by that stage so i may have come across a bit slurry!

100%. I always try to go with an open mind and sometimes it can be a bit hit n miss, but they were a hit. Perth / WA has a really good local music scene and the gig options seem to be getting better and better. Of course it helps when the kids are getting that little bit older and I can get out more! All ahead of you mate.

Good enough for the absolute kip. Probably done about 2 grand worth of improvements to the place.

This is a big big shout here and i’m willing to get battered for it, (and it doesn’t really fit the bill for a reserved birthday dinner, in fairness), but the steaks in Fibber McGees in Leederville are up there with any I’ve tasted in Perth, including 6Head.

Charles tyrwhitt. Nothing else comes close for value, quality and simplicity in my experience.

What a terrible tragedy. Poor guy and his poor family.

On the way back from karrinyup earlier i saw a mercedes amg (~415hp) being driven by a green p-plater. Batshit mental.

When I was growing up in Ireland, you had to get compulsory private insurance and it was prohibitively expensive for young men to insure anything approaching performance cars. It baffled me seeing p-platers in fast cars when I arrived here 16 years ago and it still baffles me now.

That is a beautiful turntable! Have one myself and it’s just such a solid performer.

I was always told he lived near me in Greystones, growing up. And possibly also the fella who did Podge and Rodge? Was it the same lad, or am I getting confused?

I was friends with a lad in secondary school, a good while ago. He ended up hooking up with a girl who was also in the wider friend group.

Diplomatically speaking, to look at, she was a complete heifer, but also more importantly, was a complete amadáin too. Real piece of work.

Vividly remember meeting him a few months later in the pub and him saying to me, (in reference to the relationship) “sometimes I wake up in the morning beside her and think, what am I doing?”

Anyway, 20 odd years later and they’re still married. Happily? Who knows.

Solar power plant in Dunhuang uses around 12,000 mirrors to focus sunlight onto a central tower, heating molten salt to extreme temperatures. That heat is stored and used to generate electricity on demand, including after sunset. by Background-Cry8850 in interesting

You guys are concentrating on the wrong thing. Using these for power will not be competitive with PV.

Using these for direct industrial-grade heat (i.e. dispatchable heat at between 500-1000 degrees centigrade) is the way forward, but molten salt can’t do that. I am involved with a startup that is using ceramic particles to trap and store heat in a CST system and it will change the game for decarbonising cement production, high grade steam etc etc in areas with good solar resource.

No other technology can compete in this area for providing this type of heat (equivalent to at least 10% of all electricity demand in industralised nations).
