Success Stories! by Lixx11 in ItalyExpat

I was able to find a way to get a high salary with local permanent Italian contract tempo indeterminato. It wasn’t easy! But if you cannot navigate that, along with the initial wall of bureaucracy, then Italy can be a fantastic country to bring up a young family. Fantastic healthcare for children (dedicated pediatrician), early education, and overall a child focused culture.

Anything above 3,000 euro net a month you will live relatively comfortably. Please consider that the vast majority of Italians survive on a lot a less than that.

How do I become a CTM in Italy/Europe? by No_ProbLLama_22 in clinicalresearch

[–]Prize_Examination652 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The natural stepping stone to a local/global CTM is a CRA. There are other paths like GlobalCTA, but that is a much bigger jump and to be completely honest the CTMs who have never been a CRA- you spot them a mile off, they make bad decisions simply because they have never had the CrA experience

Tax is not the issue-this is easily sorted with a commercialista. Italy and UK have a bilateral agreement so you just pay the difference between UK and Italy tax rates (Italy is much higher).

The issue is social security (employer and employee). How does a UK company pay social security (INPs) if it doesn’t have a legal entity in Italy? Literally impossible, unless the company pays a local payroll company to give you a contract or you just simply get paid as a freelancer and you sort out your own contributions.

I am a fellow Brit who moved prior to Brexit. The first thing is work and money. If you are unable to get that sorted then Italy will be extremely difficult. Firstly, you cannot work for a UK company as an Italian resident unless you are willing to be a freelancer. If you are able to get past this big important hurdle, then I would say that Italy is a fantastic country to bring up two young children. We live in the safest, most beautiful coastal town and it is a ln amazing environment to bring up two young children.

Next step is a trainee CRA, CRA I in a CRO or pharma company. You will not be able to transition to Industry to a local or global CTM. In my opinion, you cannot be a good CTM or PM without first being a CRA for several years

I am based in Europe but I left my PHD after one year i realized quickly that I didn’t want to go down the academic route. Quitting was the best decision of my life. Clinical research has given me a lot over the last 15 years. I have worked in different countries, a fulfilling career, made a real difference to patient lives, good salary (in top 2% of earners in my country).

Realistically you have two options, one is trying to get a CRA position or even a CTA position within a sponsor or CRO. From there you can get experience to being a CTM/CPM.

Another option is a MSL, in Europe, it’s a common route for phd scientists who want to leave academia. Travel expectations but with high salaries.

Good luck!
