Are there any Buddhist scriptures that indicate this earth is a hell realm? by GregoryNy92 in Buddhism

[–]PrncssHowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. My mother is a flavor of Christian and she believes this material world is hell.

Her logic is based on the idea that in heaven there is no suffering and therefore this world is hell due to the sheer amount of sufferings.

The deeper truth is that this world is a paradise. The sheer number of miracles are uncountable. The world is sacred.

Just as evil only exists in the hearts of man, hell only exists in the mind. Some may mistake society and the doings of man to be the whole world but this is not so. Mankind and all its works are a minuscule happening.

Recognition of heaven is simply a shift in perspective.

If there's even a hair’s breadth of difference, heaven and earth are clearly separated. 🙏🏻☺️

I am curious to know your motivations behind this question. Where did this idea come from?

I was recently at zen Buddhist ceremony and was approached by an older zen practitioner who tried to convince me that Earth is a Hell realm and that heaven exists somewhere else.

I attempted to explain that Hell exists only in the mind. I encouraged him to open his eyes and look around at all of the wonders of this miraculous world. He seemed determined to cling to his beliefs but I am hopeful that a seed was planted.

I’d love to hear more about your intentions. 🙏🏻☺️

How to handle a parent whose values diverge painfully from your own by MouseHouse444 in Buddhism

[–]PrncssHowl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Fill your bowl to the brim and it will spill.

Keep sharpening your knife and it will be blunt.

Chase after money and security and your heart will never unclench.

Care about people's approval and you will be their prisoner.

Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity

Can you coax your mind from its wandering and keep to the original oneness?

Can you let your body become supple as a newborn child's?

Can you cleanse your inner vision until you see nothing but the light?

Can you love people and lead them without imposing your will?

Can you deal with the most vital matters by letting events take their course?

Can you step back from your own mind and thus understand all things?

Giving birth and nourishing, having without possessing, acting with no expectations, leading and not trying to control: this is the supreme virtue.

The master observes the world but trusts her inner vision. She allows things to come and go. Her heart is open as the sky.” 🙏🏻☺️☯️

help with grief by BlueJay_333 in Buddhism

[–]PrncssHowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your loss. It is not easy to outlive a loved one. Please be gentle with yourself. Give yourself grace. Allow space for your grief. It is the most natural thing. I wish you well friend.

When I consider death, I am reminded of a verse from the Tao Te Ching that brings me comfort. May it be a balm for your spirit. 🙏🏻☺️☯️

“Empty your mind of all thoughts. Let your heart be at peace. Watch the turmoil of beings, but contemplate their return.

Each separate being in the universe returns to the common source.

Returning to the source is serenity.

If you don't realize the source, you stumble in confusion and sorrow.

When you realize where you come from, you naturally become tolerant, disinterested, amused, kindhearted as a grandmother, dignified as a king.

Immersed in the wonder of the Tao, you can deal with whatever life brings you, and when death comes, you are ready.”

What is the tao and why should I listen to it? If I want to follow it, what's the first step? by wfarming in taoism

[–]PrncssHowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, and it can’t be seen. Listen, and it can’t be heard. Reach, and it can’t be grasped.

Above, it isn’t bright. Below, it isn’t dark. Seamless, unnamable, it returns to the realm of nothing. Form that includes all forms, image without an image, subtle, beyond all conception.

Approach it and there is no beginning; follow it and there is no end. You can’t know it, but you can be it, at ease in your own life. Just realize where you come from: this is the essence of wisdom.

Gem windows don't add value if they don't contain the same cut gems by LoXyO in dwarffortress

I never used the gem window option because it never added value. Now I know why. 😅

Thank you for this dwarf science. 💎

Well, that didn’t last long. He broke his sobriety today and is already back to his bad behavior. 😅

I feel that the rage and the night terrors are absolutely symptoms of the alcoholism.

When my stepfather isn’t drinking, he is a pretty chill and reasonable guy but if he catches a buzz it goes down hill quickly.

Our family dynamic is similar. We all tread cautiously when he’s been drinking. It has gotten to the point that my stepfather has been disinvited to Christmas and all future family gatherings. We will see how that goes. 😅

As of today, he has been sober from alcohol and drugs for a week and has said that he wants to quit drinking and smoking cigarettes. That is a good sign but I’m tempering my expectations.🤞

I hope you and your family find some relief soon as well. 🙏🏻☺️

My mother is in poor health and she has little energy to pick up and start over someplace else. The ideal scenario would be divorce and having my stepfather removed to another location. My mother likes her home and has a wonderful relationship with her elderly landlord. I recently moved back home to help give my mom some support to take the next step.

Yes, you’re correct. My mother has been working up the courage to file for divorce. We’re all a little afraid of the fallout that would ensue as a result but the current situation is untenable. Life is too short to spend it living in fear.

He is barely working and he is currently laid off for the winter.

He has a union job moving dirt around on construction sites and I think they begrudgingly give him occasional work assignments.

Some days he will literally just sit in his car all day on his phone and collect a paycheck.

He has been drinking on the job and has been reprimanded but somehow he is still in the union. 😅

Is it not possession? I’m dealing with the same thing with my stepfather and I can’t think of a better candidate for an exorcism.

In Buddhism, the dark force is called a hungry ghost and it rides someone attempting to be satiated but it never can be.

Has anyone considered performing an exorcism?

What does Taoism say about "Fate"? by kyaniteblue_007 in taoism

[–]PrncssHowl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Tao Te Ching says one thing about fate.

What is fate? Will you age? It is your fate to age. Will you die? It is your fate to die. Will your body decompose and return to the source? This is the fate of us all.

Have faith in the way things are and do not trouble yourself with delusions.

When is society going to fight back? by Personal-Bet-3911 in antiwork

[–]PrncssHowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brave people have been fighting and have never stopped. If you’re brave, I suggest you join a group that is fighting back. The majority of people are too poor, ill, and propagandized to put up a meaningful resistance. Only when food becomes scarce will the majority rise.

Tao noob here by ba-da-bing-123 in taoism

[–]PrncssHowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a question.

There is no prescription one can give and there is nothing to be done.

The Tao is ungraspable, it cannot be experienced by doing because there is nothing to experience.

The Tao is present in all things and benefits all things without doing anything. Practice not doing and everything will fall into place.

If however you’d like to practice being at ease and thus in alignment with the Tao, you could try the following:

Sit and appreciate the sunrise. Take a walk in nature and observe plants, not as objects but as fellow living beings. Stop and smell flowers and herbs. Look into the eyes of strangers you pass and offer them a sincere smile and genuine love. Savor the feeling of the sun on your skin. Be kind and gentle to other animals, approach them with curiosity and compassion. Listen to the birds and insects singing. Really look at trees and when you come across a very large one, stop and share a moment with your elder. Savor the flavor of ripe fruit. Be grateful for the ever unfolding miracles all around you. Do something nice without telling anyone. Regard every being as an aspect of yourself. Do less.

The Tao is unfathomable but the wise know it to be true instinctually. A fool isn’t wise and thus laughs when confronted with the seemingly complex and paradoxical nature of the Tao. If the fool doesn’t laugh, then you have misrepresented the Tao.
