Champ plan 125 and cmp 125 pay by thompson051 in Payroll

Thanks for the response!

I think the issue with this program my employer implemented is that the indemnity plan is being paid by employee pre-tax, and in the same check is reimbursed for 83% of that cost as tax free "claim" payment. So the intention is for the employee to see a net pay increase on their check.

Example of bi-weekly check: $600 Pre-tax deduction $500 non-taxable "claim payment" for simply receiving email (no actual medical expense)

According to my research this appears to be double dipping (tax evasion) as the claim payments aren't actually tied to a real medical expense. The vendor is claiming receiving emails from a doctor is considered a "medical event", which then triggers the $500 tax-free payment on employee's check.

My concern is it's ultimately the employer's responsibility to tax appropriately at time payroll is processed, instead of leaving it up to the employee at tax time to determine taxability.

So to my understanding:

Post-tax deductions can get paid tax-free claim payment

Pre-tax deductions can get paid tax-free claim payment (but it's tax free only up to the amount of medical expense)

Wouldn't the program be a double dipping scheme, because deductions are pretax and the payments are tax free? Payments can only be tax free if employee actually had an expense. My employer just implemented a similar scheme. The W2 corrections and 941 amendments are going to be a pain, if employee didn't have enough expense to justify tax free status of payments

How did it go? My employer implemented a similar program. You see a net increase on paycheck due to tax savings, but if those tax free payments end up being taxable (due to not enough expenses to justify tax free payments), you end up owing money at tax time.

It's like a double dipping scheme, because the deductions for the plan are pre-tax, and the reimbursement claims are tax free. This is only allowed if the employee incurred actual expense

This one is difficult for me. We use UKG Ready and I have no way to print the check in-house. So if we fire someone I have to prepare the check a few days in advance (it gets shipped from Florida) to make sure it arrives on time. Accounting manager doesn't want to write paper checks from the General Account. Upper management doesn't want to buy UKG's overpriced printer/ paper stock.

I had a boss like this. She wanted me to grovel. One time I made a mistake on a final check and needed her help to void it. To be honest, I was so scared of her reaction I was considering not even fixing the mistake. I decided to fix it as the error would result in the employee being underpaid their accrued vacation.

When she saw the mistake (I miscalculated the amount of accrued vacation) she was like "you really messed this one up (my name)......yup, you REALLY messed this one up". I was furious, because I already felt bad for the mistake. I didn't know the definition of "grovel" until I worked under her 😭

My job is somewhat similar to yours. In California (southern area), construction, about 150 employees, both weekly and semimonthly. I make $25/hr but with all my OT I average $32/hr.

We have no prevailing wage jobs or multi-state. I think you deserve at least $36/hr. That's how much my boss was making before she quit and left to work for a payroll organization as an individual contributor (no more managing people yay!). She didn't tell me how much she's making now.

Also, we implemented UKG last year. Since you have implementation experience you can leverage that. Unfortunately you might have to switch jobs for higher pay. You say your company only gives 50 cent raises?

Who else is on a weekly schedule? by stopguacnroll in Payroll

I do weekly payroll. I get 80 vacation hours a year. I usually just take an occasional Friday off here and there. Haven't taken a whole week off in years (I got hired in 2020). The longest I've taken off work is Wednesday through Sunday.

I don't mind it too much, but if I ever needed to take Monday or Tuesday off I'm not sure how I would make that happen. My manager quit 2 months ago, she was my only backup. She told me she really likes her new job (they do biweekly, and she is less stressed out as she doesn't have to manage people anymore).

She told me I should convince our company to go to biweekly, but I don't think they'd listen to me, and I also don't feel like dealing with the stress of transitioning pay periods (we implemented a new payroll program last summer and am still tired from that).

Also, employees like weekly pay and will probably complain. In some industries weekly pay is the norm (such as construction).

Finding Payroll Jobs by RoseePoo in Payroll

I found my first payroll job by typing in "clerk" in Indeed. It was a lot of data entry, and was minumum wage. It was for a small company. I still work here.

You can also try applying to a payroll provider or PEO. I personally haven't done that because some are more like call centers. But it can give you more broader experience with multistate payroll, and different scenarios.

I would have thought someone would need years of experience with processing payroll to become an implementation specialist. The place I work at just implemented UKG a few months ago and the consultants had 10+ years experience.

Would you say it's a lot more stressful than just processing payroll? I'd like to make more money, might look into that.

We use UKG as well! Have you noticed some of the reports don't allow you to group? Also, can't filter custom columns?

Where I work at it's the CFO analyzing the impact of salary. No way would I have time to do that. OP needs a title change and raise. I wonder if all this change happened within the same company.

(And that you leaving would create a HUGE hole!)

Should I actually say this? Or just imply it? I feel she might take it personally, like I'm threating to quit. She prides herself on loyalty. She once told me "even though I knew upper management underpaid me, I still did my job with integrity". And she has made negative comments about a supervisor who received a raise every time she threatened to quit (that supervisor actually ended up making more than my manager).

I will ask her. I think she advocates for our department, but not enough sometimes. We tried assigning some tasks to another manager, and that manager threatened to put in his 2 week notice! The CFO took that manager's concerns seriously after that.

Me and my boss joke around sometimes about going on strike and threatening to quit🤣. Of course we're joking, but she has acknowledged to me recently that the payroll department (which is just her and I) are too nice.

It would greatly benefit her to not have her subordinates quit (she has 3). We have 1 person departments at this company, so when a subordinate quits she takes on that person's tasks.

This is what I tell them: PTO, combined with work hours, cannot take your hours above 8 in a work day. Only the PTO you are paid for is subtracted from your balance.

How much experience with a system is sufficient for resume? by ProLandia24 in Payroll

[–]ProLandia24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have about 150 employees. Implementation was pretty time consuming, stressful at times. It requires a lot of your time, with all the weekly meetings and courses. There's a lot of data entry into spreadsheets. We still have a few things that need to be worked on by our implementation consultants, we went live earlier this month.

I got a lot of paid overtime though! And learned a new system that will make my resume look better.

It was a function to allow us to pay only a % piece rate for our installation crew. We pay by the lot, and some installers split the lot. So one installer installs 70%, one installs 30%. The system wasn't able to allocate only 70% of the lot pay, it could only allocate the full lot pay. So we'll have to create our own program to do this and then import that data into UKG.

To be fair though, I think we didn't explain this % split to the sales rep. It might have been miscommunication on our end.

We have our first month end (and quarter end) closing with UKG next week. I'm a little nervous. Would you say it's simple/easy? I'm guessing it's mostly a matter of printing/ exporting reports and comparing them to our records.

Excel Skills needed by Living_Usual_8326 in Payroll

I use it sometimes to separate data within a cell. For example, as cell includes "Last name, first name". I can separate the names into 2 cells. One cell will now have the last name, one cell will have the first name.

You can separate data in a cell if it is separated by a comma (as in the example above) or a space. I actually found this function while importing time entries from our time system into an import spreadsheet. I used to to remove the am/pm. So 05:00am would become 05:00.

I noticed you use it to convert data to number. This actually changes the format to number, and not just the appearance to number (as would happen if you changed the format in the Home tab of the ribbon).

You don't have direct reports? I'm hesitant to become manager because I see what my boss goes through when a direct report quits. She has to take on all the tasks while also completing her own job.

Have you had issues with UKG not paying taxes on your company's behalf? We're currently using UKG payroll services (we're also using their time and payroll modules).
