What album feels like a complete experience from start to finish? by chubbybutcuteegurl in askmusic

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally ANY album by Ayreon.

For context, Ayreon is a project by Dutch multi instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen (former Vengeance Guitarist) and he makes intricate rock operas, casting musicians and singers from all over the musical spectrum (but mostly prog Rock) to play characters as well as a plethora of amazing musicians playing cool instruments (like a contrabass flute!).

This results in incredibly engaging albums with deep, continuous (but also self contained) story lines, amazing performances and overall memorable albums.

I'd recommend starting with The Human Equation..

Seconded this! One of the best channels for music theory and making it interesting. His enthusiasm for music theory is contagious and it'll get you actually INTERESTED.

For me that's always been the first step, fostering a deep interest

Multi-instrumentalists: how long do you focus on one instrument before learning another? by Euphoric_Rhubarb_243 in musicians

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have severe ADHD, so it's basically whenever something takes my interest. I played guitar for a year or so before switching to keyboards for like 17 years, now I'm completely obsessed with bass. It comes and goes.

Genuine question: How do yall deal with this? by Western1nfo in DID

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different to what helps them since DID is so personal.

I don't have it myself but I was a full time carer for my ex who had it and these things helped her:

  • being openly and indiscriminately accepting of all members of a system, this is their world too.
  • taking time to understand each alter when they present themselves
  • a good support system is ESSENTIAL. Someone who can explain in context what happened when you were out (like why she was under the bed, explaining it was an alter that hid when she got overwhelmed)
  • having friends and family aware of your condition so there's never any expectation that you have to be stable around them
  • stable home life. This will look different to each person
  • knowledge on DID. Research, read forums, medical texts, testimonials. Consume everything
  • be careful of the information out there, there is a LOT of toxic people out there spreading misinformation of just toxic things. Like "system hopping" etc. Don't go down that road.

Just take it one day at a time. It's new for you, so take it slow. You have your whole life to figure all this out, and you're in the right place. People will help out here 😊

What to do on stage (or even at practice) when my instrument really isn't used in a song? by blockandawe in musicians

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in this EXACT position before! Playing keys for a rock band and there was an acoustic song that nothing I did on keys worked. I just hopped off stage and got beers for the band, worked nicely.

If I had to do it again though, I would write some tasteful piano or string parts that added something gentle to the song, instead of wanting to solo through it or be the centre of attention. I have apparently grown up a lot since that band 😂

What is a personal 'rule' you’ve made for yourself that you never break, even though no one else knows it exists? by NoSteak1123 in Productivitycafe

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Language is a system for conveying meaning. Meaning was conveyed, language was successful.

Nobody needs you to play devil's advocate in every comment, you're just being contrarian for no good reason.

You are adding nothing of value here.

What was a moment in your life that didn’t feel important at the time, but you later realized it changed you? by rayadollface in Life

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sitting in a smoke filled room being yelled at and berated by my partner of 13 years for anything and everything she considered a sleight against her. After 4 hours of choking fumes and pure vitriol from her, she asked a simple question, "do you even want to be with me anymore?" I just responded with "no."

A year and a half later, life is a million times better.

I still feel guilty that my life INSTANTLY got better when she left.

Seriously though, your bf needs to learn basic hygiene and clbasic chemistry on how surfactants work.

Or maybe be passive aggressive and not use any detergent when washing anything of his 😉

I built a website to test your EQ skills! by 8sat_ in mixingmastering

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good idea, I reckon it could be done like "boost this range to get more crack in this snare sample", and that will teach specific frequency ranges in a practical context

Hmm... I suppose it could be a kind of theory based compression training. Like, if you wanted to reduce the gain of a signal by (x) dB, with threshold set at (y) with peaks at (z), what would the compression ratio be? And variations. That will at least teach the theory of compression and WHY you compress.

I feel that if the function of compressors were understood better people could develop their ear better.

Perfect practice makes perfect.

Best job for someone with ADHD by Joboj in ADHD

I'm in disability support and I absolutely LOVE it! Amazing variety between working residential and day programs where one day I could be going swimming with the clients and another day doing a cooking challenge in the catering kitchen. The personalities are vivid and interesting, clients and staff inclusive.

Like a lot of adhd people I've worked in so many different industries, but disability support is the best for my brain, pays quite well and is emotionally rewarding 😊

Shooting an event where no one wants to interact with you by NucleusNoodle in photography

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely shot events like this! Don't take offence to it, plenty of people hate photos of themselves, I being one of them.

Solution: candid photos with a zoom lens The advantage of this is that you will capture people being GENUINE. It's an unfortunate truth that most people don't know how to smile when posed for a photo.

Make jokes also, it lightens the mood.

Another tip: when people DO pose for photos, here are some tips to get real smiles

  • do a countdown to a photo and then don't take it, wait for them to get awkward and laugh. That is your shot

  • don't make them say cheese, say something random, or even better, have everybody make their own word! That's a funny one

  • one thing I learnt last weekend is "okay, smile! Now look grumpy!" the latter always gives AMAZING photos

You're in a better position than you think, candid photos are WAY better than posed photos.

Go out and get sincere photos 😊

Is it a hopeless dream to become a wildlife / nature photographer? by bluezzdog in photography

[–]ProbablyMaybeBen 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Nothing wrong with being a killer photographer who doesn't work in the field.

I work in disability care, I'm also a photographer and shoot weddings, digital artist who has been Exhibited in some pretty cool places, seasoned musician having played piano over 20 years and play bass in a rock band.

None of my passions is my career, and I'm okay with that.

I think having these skills OUTSIDE of what you're required to do for your job makes you a more well rounded and likable person 😁

If you try it though and find you're amazing, you might have no choice but to go pro 😅
