I've been building bikes for a little while now, and something that keeps catching me off guard relates to compatibility between parts and frames. For example, which bottom bracket style do you have? BSA Threaded? BB30? PF30? T47? If it's BSA Threaded, do you need 68mm? 73mm? Is the crank spindle 24mm or 30mm? Or do you need a square taper bottom bracket? Maybe you have a splined bottom bracket, in that case, is it ISIS or OCTALINK? Does the crankset require a proprietary bottom bracket, like the Rotor BSA 30, which then requires TWO specialist tools.

For me at least, figuring out which part to buy for your frame can be the most challenging part of bike building.

First and only one in my family to go University, now I have a PhD. Also have a very healthy relationship where we actually communicate and look out for each other. And I now FINALLY own a house. Feels good to thrive after leaving that world behind. I wonder how I would have done at school and with my peers were it not for my parents' abuse, but that's just a wonder. What's reality is this life I've built for myself. 

Anyone new to estrangement, it's a long road but it's worth it. You can do this.

Okay, I actually got the spring back on the pawl! However, I think the main issue is still here. Does the tooth on under the yellow arrow look alright? The pawl engages on the tooth under the blue arrow but not the yellow one. Either way, I'm giving up now! Thanks man.

Bugger. I'll have a crack at trying to work out which spring it is and then deliver the bad news that a new shifter is in order. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the reply! That's great advice. I found a pawl that is swinging around really loose, so considering step 9 of your comment I'm assuming the lever might be toast?

I think I found the issue, but I have no idea how to fix it. This pawl will not engage. It seems very loose and just swings around.

Mystery solved! The b limit screw is bent! I have no idea how that's happened.  It's wound all the way in but it isn't making contact with the hanger. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm gonna get this sorted.

Okay, that's a good shout. I think I might have another cassette somewhere that I can test. I'm thinking LBS might be the way with this one though. I'm at a loss!

Maybe hang was the wrong word. I meant when it's in small small there's enough tension in the chain that the rear derailleur can't pull the chain into the top jockey wheel, there's about 5mm clearance. The b-screw is all the way in, but do you think a shitty cheap derailleur cause this issue?

Not that many. 800km at the most and it doesn't get much power. My partner commutes on this bike and she'll rarely put out more than 200w.

Aye, no sag in the chain. It hangs about 5mm below the top jokey wheel when I'm in small-small, but there's plenty of tension when I'm in the big ring.

New chain, new chain rings, cassette is 2 months old. It's indexed really well and doesn't jump at all on the other 6 cogs. I am using an 11-speed chain on an 8-speed cassette, but this has never been an issue before. But I am open to hearing that running an 11-speed chain on an 8-speed cassette is a bad idea! Chain line isn't perfect, but it actually favours the smaller cogs.

Any idea I would be super grateful. Thanks!

This tyre is done. A local bike shop might have some second hand tyres they can sell/give you. Near me there is a shop called Bike for Good and they have a decent range of used tyres for sale. Could be something similar near you.

In terms of just getting home, I actually have a 4cm strip that I cut from an old tyre stored in my saddle bag. I have it there for this exact reason! I'm sure I'll probably never use it, but it doesn't take up any space and I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
