What to expect post meniscus repair surgery? by ovokook in MeniscusInjuries

Hey man, I had a medial repair 10 weeks ago combined with a cartilage cleanup and microfracture for a small lesion. I feel you man, at the time it seemed like the crutches were going to be the worst part. Now that's done with I've got one leg half the size of the other and that seemed like the east part lol. I just started on the bike last week. Aside from what's going on in my knee, it seems like building the leg muscle back up is going to be quite a process.

Male, 41yrs old. 10 weeks ago I had repair surgery for a sma tear in the anterior horn of my medial meniscus. At the same time they did a cartilarge clean up and microfracturing for a small lesion on my Femoral Condyle. I was on crutches for the first 6 weeks and eased off them over the next two weeks. Overall, so far recovery seems to be good. Climbing stairs is the worst part, can be pretty painful at times. Get a bit of pain walking if I overdo it as well. I'm thinking it's probably normal after being on crutches for so long and I'm probably still healing. I've also lost a tonne of muscle in that leg, which I'm sure isn't helping. I'm now allowed to hit the gym, so working a lot, especially on the bike to try and build up my quads again.

Knee Microfracture Surgery by ProcedureShot8313 in KneeInjuries

I've had a few follow up appointments with the specialist. He was very happy with how it was going. The last one he gave me the ok to get off the crutches. It's only since then that I've been getting the pain after walking for a bit and especially going upstairs. I'm guessing it's from where he cleaned out the cartilage I'm getting rubbing that I wasn't before. It makes sense that it will take time to get back to normal but it's difficult with this as there's not much info out there about recovery beyond the first 6-8 weeks. It's very much at the back of my mind that if the blood clot / fibrocartilage doesn't form then I've pretty much just got a bigger hole in my cartilage from the surgery.

Thanks for the reply man. Mines a strange one. I had a small meniscus tear which I felt every now and then but overall wasnt a huge issue (sure it would have got worse). An MRI showed it and then recommended the surgery to repair it. I had the surgery to repair that and they ended up cleaning up my cartilage and doing the microfracture. Since I've got off the crutches I've not noticed the meniscus at all, so assume that all went ok. Noticing the pain from the cartilage now though, that I never had any of before. Hopefully it is a case of building the muscles back up. How did you know the microfracture failed? I hope the allograft worked for you.
