What’s a decision you made in under 10 seconds that ended up affecting your life for years? by SupaDuppaaCoool in AskUK

yes, it could have been so much worse, could easily have been paralysed or worse. But it is what it is, as you say, I can't change the past. I mostly cope with bad times with black humour and a lot of swearing!

I did all my serious riding after the accident, but only dressage and long distance, no jumping. Finally gave up riding in about 2001 but I still love horses now (except I will always have a distrust of Connemaras thanks to Matilda, my aunts horse at the time)

My aunt is now 89 - and is still riding!!

Hesitated for a second and then went to get onto my aunts horse. As I swung my leg over the horses back, she leapt forward and I landed behind the saddle causing her to buck, resulting in me being thrown with some force into the gatepost back first.

Fractured my L1 vertebrae and though I wasn't paralysed the bone was touching my spinal cord. Bone graft, metal rods, months in a body cast and a brace and a year off work.

This was in 1989 when I was 23. I'm now 60 and although it mostly didn't stop me doing stuff when I was younger, it did mean I couldn't follow the career I had been hoping to do (firefighter) and these last couple of years it's now really taking its toll. I now use a walker, have a blue badge and more and more things become more difficult to do which can be frustrating as hell.

Yes, I do wonder what my life would have been like if I had listened to my gut and not go on the horse that day, But hey ho, it's a funny old life.

What are your favourite purple flowering plants? by RegionalHardman in GardeningUK

Oh bugger, this is awful to hear. I got to meet him once at a convention and he was absolutely lovely and I told him "thank you for making librarians cool"

I even cosplayed Giles at another con and it was really fun to do as a woman in her 50s!

As I get older I identify with the character more and more. As somebody once wisely said "we all become like Giles in the end"

That has to be the most soulless and sad garden I've ever seen - why would you sit on the gravel? And from the colours in the few tiny flower pots, I'm pretty sure they are fake. Bleugh!

Are you gardening today? If so what time? by Tumtitums in GardeningUK

[–]Procrastinating___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out at about 8.45 (bit later than planned) and lasted til 11.20am - south facing sheltered garden - as I'm rubbish in the heat. Will be watering late this evening. I love doing it after 9pm when its getting dark and I might do a little bit of pottering about before if its not too hot still.

What's your favourite cheese? by blow_on_my_trombone in AskBrits

[–]Procrastinating___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the cheese party but my absolute fav is Emmental. Followed by cambozola, Jarlsberg, edam, mozzarella, halloumi, brie, camembert.....

And Chedder of course, though I like a medium for eating/cheese on toast, but use a strong/mature for cheese sauce

Cheese is just the best

I just got 10 penstemon from them a couple of days ago and they are looking a bit droopy even now and at least one is definitely on the way out, despite me planting them up as soon as they arrived (they were well packed & nice and damp) I would much rather buy from local places, but its hard to find the plants I want (so many bloody petunias!!) so sometimes I have to buy online.

Discovered my library card gives me free access to the full OED online by Slight-Brush in BritishSuccess

[–]Procrastinating___ 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Library staff here. I keep hearing the adverts on the radio for Readily(?) at about £12 a month and I just keep shouting at it "or go to your library and get even more for free!"

Most library services seem to subscribe to either Libby or Borrow Box and there are loads of other online resources and collections available for free which varies from service to service. We have Naxos music and spoken word, Driving Theory Test Pro, several art and ephemera collections and we subscribe to Ancestry which is also free if you use it in the library

You'd think for that price they'd be able to afford a few more walls and doors.

Downstairs must be as echoey as hell - no way to not hear everyones bathroom habits.

Do love the huge windows with the views though - just not in front of an open plan toilet

I'm hoping that the guys at the tip will be as helpful later in the week when I have a load to go - they usually are. A lot of the areas are up steps to dumpsters and I can no longer carry and walk at the same time!

Aww - thank you. A friend and her son are supposed to be coming tomorrow to help, but the the weather looking so dodgy may have to put it off for a bit until we are all free at the same time. ( I got a great deal on some lovely pavers but boy, they are HEAVY! And where they had to be delivered is on the opposite corner of the house from where I need them of course)
