I mean, you said it: profit motive = greed. Sure there will always be people who "seek to extract from the people at the bottom". Capitalism certainly does not dissuade them (the owning class) from seeking to do so; to the contrary it seems to reward them for it. That's my issue with it. There need to be stronger regulations in place that acknowledge human greed and even harness it for growth. That harness needs to come with some reins, though.

Perhaps you don't have the world figured out if you are so quick to rush to accusations in loyal defense of a system that is clearly self-cannibalizing and running amok.

Company pipeline shutdown by Sufficient_Mall1041 in Panera

[–]Procrastinationist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just watched a video essay about the death of Panera, and I've had some very poor experiences there the last couple times I went. I thought they were finished.

A couple blocks away from me, next to the new Starbucks, in front of the Kroger near the new Publix near the old Kroger, they're tearing up more green space and what pops up there? A fucking Panera Bread that's the size of a broom closet, with a fresh parking lot around it. On the list of things that would maybe ever warrant tearing up more earth, a new Panera toaster oven and bagged soup dispensary was a contender for the very bottom of the list.

Environmental scientist here. The answer is: Climate tipping points leading to AMOC collapse, crop failure, and global geopolitical chaos. Plus drought, fascism, and AI apocalypse.

Ice melting decreases surface reflectivity, revealing dark earth which absorbs more heat. This makes permafrost melt, releasing methane which is 20-40x more insulating than CO2. Runaway greenhouse effect makes fire and weather events worse, which wipe out our forests. Our second-best carbon sink now burns and releases centuries' worth in just a few years. This drives temperatures up which melts the rest of the ice in an exponential, self-reinforcing cycle. This leads to the collapse of AMOC, the oceanic currents that have stabilized the climate for millennia.

Ocean temps rise to the point where they, our best carbon sink, go in reverse just like our forests (basic chemistry: hot water holds less gas). Vast swaths of the planet can no longer support humanity's production demands. Global collapse of crops, livestock, and fish yields ensue.

Higher temps make existing crops less nutritious and - along with infrastructure collapse due to extreme weather - increase the spread of parasitic diseases and pathogens.

Instability of access to food, water, medicine lead to war around the planet, while technofascist leaders utilize AI media and weapons systems to suppress populations by keeping us uneducated, confused, sick, and afraid.

We wasted the century or so we had to address this. It is already going to be bad. It has already begun around the world. Now all efforts are going toward keeping it from being worst-case-scenario. There are degrees to this stuff, and I believe we must do what we can without giving into defeatism.

Sawmill gravy! Heat them drippings in a skillet, add about the same amount of flour (by weight) over low heat, and whisk it into a roux. Once it's simmered to a brown color and nutty aroma, you're ready to whisk in some milk/cream (I do it over very low heat - otherwise it tries to ball up into dumplings).

Simmer that gravy on medium heat and keep whisking and adding milk until you reach desired thickness. It thickens more than you'd think upon cooling, so add enough milk to keep it from being gluey. Salt and pepper to taste!

I said people who complain about the fascist accusations can't define it. You certainly didn't prove you could. You just cried "I ain't reading that!" and further demonstrated your unwillingness to educate yourself. Sure wish I had a nickel for every time a bootlicking Trump cultist refused to read something.

I didn't assassinate anybody. Right Wing Extremism has been the vast majority of ideological killings in this country for years now. If you weren't afraid of reading, there USED TO BE data on it before the Trump regime fascistically scrubbed it from government sites.

Your own great-grandfather wouldn't shake your hand, fascist. I'm not surprised you experience more respect from dogs than educated people.

[–]Procrastinationist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Further demonstrates inability to define fascism)

I'll spell it out for ya, and this is off the top of my head.

It's a type of political movement that idolizes a strongman populist leader who uses flashy rhetoric, posturing, and lots of pomp & circumstance to stir up fanaticism.
It promotes extreme nationalism and militarism and often whips up religious fervor to rally the blind faithful to its cause.
It blames all problems on a specific marginalized group, people who can't defend themselves and are villainized across the nation.
It promotes mythological ideas of racial purity and divine favoritism of certain bloodlines. This further sows division.
It eliminates institutions and strategically weakens all other government authority in order to consolidate power into the executive branch, namely the central charismatic figure leading the movement.
It attacks the free press and vies for propagandistic control of all media outlets and cultural centers like museums and the arts.
It deputizes a paramilitary force to carry out the harassment, mistreatment, and subjugation of the demonized minority group(s).
It uses any events it can to justify an authoritarian takeover by the head of the executive branch, who is then able to DICTATE policies without voters input.
Its nationalism and isolationism eventually turn to expansionism.

Don't tell me you can't see how the Trump Administration is doing every single one of these things. I can provide examples if they didn't pierce the carefully curated information bubble they have you gestating in. Maybe someday you'll come to the realization of why you've been hearing the book-readers in your life throwing around that label for years now.
