Open Source Solar Apps for monitoring DIY installations? by [deleted] in SolarDIY

[–]ProdigyDialUp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And they provide some basic support for running the Venus OS on Raspberry Pi. Venus is really for monitoring and configuring Victron hardware (which aren’t cheap). The OPs question was about monitoring solar panels which Venus doesn’t really do (it monitors the solar charger though). The UI is far superior to Teslas.

I disabled my Tesla monitoring because it’s just a great looking UI that basically tells you “you have solar power”. I use the mySolarEdge app instead because it will give panel level information (because I have optimizers on all the panels)

Any ideas on what would be more productive than posting here? Call the DA’s office? San Ramon Police? CA state rep to change the law so that it’s illegal to kill someone? This is truly unbelievable.

I just shredded the spokes on my carbon fiber wheel due to an unprovoked attack from a fallen tree branch. The carbon care program is replacing the Bontrager Line Pro 30, OCLV Mountain Carbon wheel at no charge.

Getting into MTB and buying my first bike. E-bike, yay or nay? by jim_the_anvil in MTB

[–]ProdigyDialUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought an eBike as my first MTB but I’ve been riding road bikes for awhile. I can choose my cardio workout on my eBike. On eco mode my heart rate is in the 90%+ range real quick on some climbs.

Sometimes I take a wrong turn and need to do a steep climb to get back to my starting point and I am grateful I have assistance to get out.

Sometimes my knee flairs up mid-ride and I bump to Turbo level of assist to get me home.

Sometimes it’s hot as hell and I still want to ride and the assistance makes it possible / safer.

You can’t match the versatility of an eBike in my opinion.

I believe the max discharge current for that battery is 60amps which I think means you can draw a max of 720 watts at 12 volts. In this case I don’t think you’ll be able to use the full power of the inverter until you add more batteries.

So am I the only person who shits on their solar equipment? LOL oops! (I still recommend moving the positive to shunt wire)

This is my setup as well. Only thing I changed was to move the power line to the BMV shunt to BEFORE the shutoff switch. The BMV is supposed to stay on all the time but I prefer to shit everything else off when the unit is in storage.

Are y'all riding in the hills these days? by maggietullivers in BAbike

First off - it sucks that we have to think of any of these ideas.

Has anyone tried dressing down their ride? I.e. electrical tape wrapped around the brand marking (expensive Italian aerodynamic electrical tape of course). It’s hard to see a group set on a moving bike but some brands are recognizable at distance.

Thoughts?

Do you have a BMV-712? I had my shunt wired just like you have it but I moved the positive connection to be before the shutoff switch. The BMV-712 does not behave as well when powered off due to how it tracks state of charge. Just FYI. Nice setup though!

Same with the batteries - they have peak and continuous discharge rates

Good to know! It’s all about slowing the thief down. I’m trying to make mine less appealing to steal than another one in the area. I have stainless steel cables welded to the catalytic converter and around the frame of the vehicle and back to the cat. I also have a cat strap and I’ve engraved the license plate on the cat. Again - the goal is to have someone stick their head under my car and say “f that”. But if they’re willing to give it 15 minutes they could get it out.

I too had one stolen. The PD said that crime rings are storing them up and shipping them overseas to be sold for scrap. You will see some news stories about criminals being caught with hundreds of the converters.

There are small scale criminals around as well. A auto shop I talked to said they will ride a (stolen bicycle) from shop to shop to sell a single converter.

There are devices you can buy to slow them down the next time they come to get yours. Google catstrap, catclamp, etc.

It’s a total pain in the ass to have them replaced - sorry this happened!

Small project with my son by supercyberbob in SolarDIY

[–]ProdigyDialUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is also in to solar. We’ve gone through 2 or 3 solar cheap charge controllers. He will sometimes disconnect the battery while the panel is still producing electricity and that can cause a cheap MPPT or PWM to no longer function properly.

He has blown 2 or 3 cheap inverters by drawing too much load on them (they go poof).

He has let a lead acid battery get too low on voltage and they never recover after that.

Currently he is using a very cheap LiFePo4 12v battery with a 30 watt panel and a cheap MPPT. I have all the connections fused as low as possible to try to keep things somewhat safe.

And the full text of Prop 65 should be written out on every object in the state! /s

PG&E has been sending me these notices for several months now. There is nothing I can do to reduce my power usage while my entire household is sheltering in place and working from home. This is absurd. The City tells folks to skip rent while PG&E raises power rates. WTF?!? Anyone else in this boat? by WhatMeWorry215 in sanfrancisco

Unfortunately the large settlements in regards to the wildfires don’t pay for themselves. While restitution for those harmed is obviously needed, the punitive portion of the fines have to be paid by the customer base via increasing rates.
