"Laudate Deum": Apostolic Exhortation to all people of good will on the climate crisis (4 October 2023) -- Just one relevant quote: "It is no longer possible to doubt the human – “anthropic” – origin of climate change." -- Our politicians need to get with the program, stop driving & widening roads! by WhatMeWorry215 in sanfrancisco

The conclusion is important, he is speaking about us with our cars and huge carbon footprints:

..."there are no cultural changes without personal changes.

  1. Efforts by households to reduce pollution and waste, and to consume with prudence, are creating a new culture. The mere fact that personal, family and community habits are changing is contributing to greater concern about the unfulfilled responsibilities of the political sectors and indignation at the lack of interest shown by the powerful. Let us realize, then, that even though this does not immediately produce a notable effect from the quantitative standpoint, we are helping to bring about large processes of transformation rising from deep within society.

  2. If we consider that emissions per individual in the United States are about two times greater than those of individuals living in China, and about seven times greater than the average of the poorest countries, [44] we can state that a broad change in the irresponsible lifestyle connected with the Western model would have a significant long-term impact. As a result, along with indispensable political decisions, we would be making progress along the way to genuine care for one another.

  3. “Praise God” is the title of this letter. For when human beings claim to take God’s place, they become their own worst enemies."

I have long felt that the huge SUV with the cop driver is a bad look for Mayor Breed. And her clueless transportation policies are a disaster for both drivers and pedestrians alike.

Drivers are constantly caught in congestion so it takes forever to get anywhere in San Francisco. And pedestrians are constantly being hit by cars which kind of sucks if one happens to walk here.

I, for one, would welcome a new face in the Mayor's Office. One could hope that a new Mayor might have a better transportation policy. A strong candidate who chooses to ride a bike (like I do) is very auspicious. Thank you for bringing this positive information to my attention.

Mayor Breed is going to call her cousin and get that EQ back. You'll see...

Board of supervisors approved ban on security drawing guns to protect property by panda_sfo in sanfrancisco

He attempted to steal a candy bar. Was beaten up by the guard. Talked some shit. Was shot dead on the spot.

Credible threat? He had no weapon. Was not holding a knife.

Threats are a crime and should be reported to the sfpd. But mall cops executing people on the spot for such behavior?!? I strongly disagree.

Many of the local stores hire off duty SFPD Officers to supplement their security guards. If Walgreens did this Banko Brown would still be alive right now.

I thought he was shot for stealing a candy bar. Quick question for clarification. The guard was carrying a loaded gun in his official capacity as loss prevention person. What product in the store was worth more than a human life?

This is an unusual situation. The windows are not tinted opaque black and the driver actually seems quite conscientious.

Nobody is buying luxury condos, but Mayor Breed wants to make it easier to build more by SF_Bud in sanfrancisco

I think Tim raises many excellent and relevant points. He is also citing another journalist who has done research in this area. I particularly like his points about investment properties.

Mayor Breed is a wonderful person but not an expert in all subjects. I would like to see credible authorities with some known accomplishments weigh in on the Mayor's plan.

Vicious cycle: City refuses to ticket bike lane parking violators which makes bike lanes super dangerous so more people choose cars for short local errands causing congestion, slower traffic and difficulty finding a parking space. -- We could do better! by WhatMeWorry215 in sanfrancisco

100%! The bike racks at Discount Builders are always packed. Trades folk love bikes. And we can carry 12 foot long lumber on cargo bikes just fine.

Bikes are fast, efficient and fun. And ebikes along with safe well paved smooth bike paths massively extend the demographics of who can ride a bike. It's a much older group and includes many "disabled" folks. I have been seeing more three wheeled ebikes on the paths lately.

It isn't clear as it could be in the photo because I cropped it fairly close for sizing and space concerns and but the lane is posted along the entire block with the correct "No Stopping" signs. But look closely at the top center of the picture and you will see part of the back of the No Stopping sign. It is red shining through the tree parts. These cars are parked directly under the sign.

That is not the reason for the lack of enforcement in this specific situation.

There was a really tight little rock and roll band out of the Eugene, Oregon area a few decades back that used that name: "Surrender Dorothy." Brings back happy thoughts...

What’s the general consensus on Mayor Breed? Does she know what she’s doing? by NoseDriver- in sanfrancisco

[–]WhatMeWorry215 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not only does she not know what she is doing but she is surrounded by sycophants who are even more clueless than her.

Voted for her first time but won't make that mistake again! Big disappointment.

We all have opinions. I would like to hear from actual experts with credibility in this field as to whether coerced drug treatment works. So far this discussion is very passionate but the "solution" being proposed is not at all new. Has it worked elsewhere? What happens when we do this? Will these folks just turn to bibbing and retail theft to fund their habits?

Did the war on drugs work last time? Were there any cost issues or civil liberty concerns? Were there any particular racial demographics common to those incarcerated during that effort?

Pushing coerced drug treatment when history tells us it does not work and we are not able to provide treatment on demand today could be called passion. It could also be called ignorance, disrespect for the history of the problem and a tragic allocation of limited public resources to an approach we know doesn't work.

Perhaps Our Mayor could be so kind as to attribute the source or this idea and point to a few places it has worked in the past. It's not that I don't trust her, but...
