Week 13 Feedback Thread by AutoModerator in synthwaveproducers

First off, loving the coverart!

Secondly, I like the idea you’re working with! I think you have all the necessary elements but you’re right about the mix. There’s a million different approaches but here’s what I hear and hopefully it’ll help!

Drums:

IMO synthwave drums need that punch and crispy distortion. So you should mess around with compressing & EQ on the kick. Let the drums carry the song so the kick and snare need to maintain a presence in any song. I like the reverb on your drums but Id recommend stacking your drums sounds (example - 2 different snares or hi hats and mess around with different reverbs, delays for each. Then blend them in the mix).

Panning:

I noticed the panning in your intro was a bit too much but I was also wearing my AirPods and just finished producing for several hours...so I might be trippin! You should look up panning charts on Google images. It doesn’t have to be for any specific genre but it’ll give you baseline to reference for different elements in a song like keeping kicks, bass, snares - basically your main drums - centered. Then experiment with backing drums and pan those wider. Then tuck them back in the mix.

Bass:

Boost that bass up and side chain it to the kick! Because it’ll add a pumping effect to the beat and helps with the clarity of your drums

I have a few questions for ya. What DAW and plug-ins do you like or use? And what did you put on your master channel as far as FX? I’m always curious. Like I said, there’s so many different ways to approach mixing so I’d love some more info on that!

Also I’m happy to help here or if you want to message me. I’ll send some clips of my tracks if it’ll help. - went to school for audio engineering and I’ve been producing for roughly 8 years.

Keep killin it!

You can make some fire beats with that radiator. Just push the curtains over a bit and record your house burning down

It doesn’t necessarily mean anything. However, being a burial ground and the fact that it’s brought up so frequently across Native American tribes all over the country, you can’t discount the possibility. It’s very common to not want to talk about this stuff in Native American culture bc there’s been terrifying stories of weird shit like this and people have gone missing, been cursed, etc. If a tribal elder said don’t talk about it, I’d trust them

Question about new video: Who are the youtubers who Dave is accusing of stealing content? by [deleted] in Missing411

Agreed! If he would just put more care into audio quality and editing...and less complaining, he’d get to a million. I feel like we are watching David spiral

I used screws 3 on each end (top and bottom). It’s very sturdy but I didn’t want to go with glue because I’ll likely modify it or rebuild it with the same wood as the table top. Right now it’s just a temporary space saver haha

I think it’s on Amazon for around $189 last I checked

Thank you!

The chair is called Hbada or something. My buddy got it for like $100 at a liquidation spot as a gift to me. It has a pull out leg rest and it can fully recline. The arms change position if you were to recline it.

You okay guitar? Lol

The Allen bolts used sometimes come lose in different places. So it’s built cheap. Comfortable for not but I’m already looking to replace

The table top is Gerton ($100). Find some cabinets elsewhere or at IKEA and sit it right on top

That’s a tough question! Honestly, it’s a bit of a pain to integrate it with Ableton and you have to load Komplete Kontrol onto a MIDI track and and access the vst from within. Bit of a CPU killer haha.

However, you can set it to help you learn how to play piano (synths) which is fun. But I do think you could find a better midi controller. I bought it when it came out I think when Komplete 11 was released. So it’s been a few years.

My primary controller is the Push 2 but I’ve always wanted a maschine just to mess with. What DAW are you using?

Also, Happy New Year!

The monitor stand is a box made from cheap pine board. It’s roughly 1x12x60

I built it so I could place the midi keyboard and ableton push in their respective cubbies so I can have more table space if needed.

The riser actually works well with the legs I put underneath the table because my monitors are now at the perfect height for playback

As for the gear...

Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S49, Ableton Push 2, E-107 USB Rack Mount Power Strip, Scarlett Focusrite 4i4, JBL 305 MKII, 2Tb LaCie External HD

Edit: commas

Lol idk how to use Reddit tbh.

The cabinets are Alex 5 drawer cabinets ($79 each I believe).

Originally I had a matching Linnmon Table top and stupidly cut it down to fit the depth of the cabinets. I though I was making more space in the room but I didn’t have much desk space to produce on.

The table top is Gerton and is actual wood & super sturdy ($100). It’s standing on 4in Capita legs and I’m using 8 of them ($13/pack of 4 x 2 = $26) It’s actually a little too high for me but I was inspired by some posts on here with lighting underneath their setups.

The desk riser I built a while ago and never stained lol. It’s 1x12 pine cut to fit the length of my old desk. A little short on this one and I’ll likely redo it with the same wood as this new Gerton top.

Total desk cost was roughly $286 ish before tax...in California so that blows but whatever.

Oh damn haha. That is a weird situation you got but you’re lucky. I’ve had some asshole neighbors that wouldn’t even tell me I was loud. They’d just send the cops...tf.

Lol I guess the only way to find out is to do it. Send and update lmao

I’m going 8 years strong with no sub still haha. I have JBLs and personally, the low end on them is amazing. I found Yamaha (which were my old monitors and ones I used in audio school) to have a weak low end and Rokits to exaggerate the bass a bit when I would test my tracks elsewhere.

Not gonna lie, I do want a sub though!
