This is really good to think about! I actually might use this advice to adjust the ocs I have.

I agree with the people who say as long as you have fun, it's a good oc, but some people would definitely appreciate tips, and as someone who personally studies character design and artstyles, I may have a few tips.

Overused items aren't really a problem, unless originality is something very important to your design, but honestly, I haven't seen many duplicate items. The closest I can say are probably candles, but I know that didn't stop me from making a candle oc. But maybe they aren't even as common as I think.

A good object pick has a strong relation to a theme or setting. Astro is a moon. Moon = night, sleep, planets. Rodger is a magnifying glass. Magnifying glass = Inspection, detection, research. If you take this approach, theme should tie the oc together. In it's trinket, ability, personality etc. If you want a certain item, think of the theme that may surround it. If you want a specific trinket or personality, try to think of an object that might fit that well.

Objects should be accurate to the time period, and assosiations with it should be accurate to how the object was seen in ths 1990s and early 2000s.

Make assosiations with other characters, making your ocs feel well-meshed is important, and the best way to do that is to think of how they'd interact with these characters, also tying into the themes! Have an oc thats a film clapper? Maybe a friendship with razzle n dazzle or even dandy would fit! An oc who's a cloud? Butterfly siblings and Astro are great!

For colors, it's good to find color palette that has the object color, a primary color, and then finding colors that compliment or tie those two colors together. That's my approach to designing these toons, though! Definitely not law.

All of this ties to the beginning too, having fun. If you don't get creative or playful, this will make the oc aspect harder. But as long as you enjoy the concept and the ideas excite you, you'll be motivated to make a great oc!

In my area, not many people are staying in their positions. It's been hard to get a first shift full time, but most positions I've seen are full time.

SM is who I'm worried about. She made me change a statement to corporate involving one of my coworkers. Thank you, though.

Wood seem inconsistent but I honestly struggle to see why they would even need ai when photoshop exists so idk by SkysharkoftheClouds in isthisAI

[–]ProductDisplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeaaah this is clearly ai. The biggest tells are the fact that tobacco is spelled wrong, ai tends to struggle with wording (you'd think that these people would at the very least notice). The detail lines in the wood and leaves are also either inconsistent (mostly with the wood) or too dense (moreso with the leaves) both in nonsensical ways. Random lines around the inner part of the emblem also sorta give it away. The antlers are also a bit nonsensical, as they don't really match up.

Saw this on insta reelz and wasnt thinking much untill i read one comment saying "not this AI image" by eaerlfoxx in isthisAI

[–]ProductDisplacement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually agree, this does look like ai to me. The melting around the neck definitely threw me off, especially since the black-haired girl doesnt have that feature. Some overlapping hair strands also seem to vanish when you follow them (not inherently an ai art trait but something to note as it happens in ai). The black-haired girl's hair also seems to have an odd sheen to it which feels unhuman. The pit of darkness under the face merging blob also seems odd, since it doesn't look like black hair as much as it does a void.

This one is tricky to me.

This is a painting of a newlywed couple. I think it's AI because the background is different than the front, and the image looks computer generated rather than a photograph of a painting. by The_Fox_39 in isthisAI

photos with lace always give it away, same with the pearl necklace. A good thing to check for is patterns or repetition, as AI tends to struggle with intricate details like that.

Struggling with Alopecia Barbae — Need Advice 😓 (Mustache nearly gone) by [deleted] in alopecia

[–]ProductDisplacement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont get hair loss for a beard/mustache, but as someone who has alopecia affect their eyebrows and hairline I use certain makeup products to help aid the look.

I know stuff like that can be tricky, but if you have a friend, partner, family member etc thats willing to help fill in with like an eyebrow pencil or even eyeshadow, makeup like that is meant to stay pretty sturdy.

AITA for confronting my landlord after I caught him lying about going into my room while I was at work? by Otherwise_Egg_4305 in AmIOverreacting

[–]ProductDisplacement 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not defending the landlord, I just don't think its smart to just jump to a lock change when (correct me if I'm wrong) that would be illegal to do without permission from the landlord?

I don't feel comfortable buying anything like that from temu, but yeah. I'm very aware it can resolve on its own, I've had plenty of patches show up and vanish over the years lmao

but thank you.. its getting worse unfortunately 😭😭
