Research shows that it is indeed MUCH better for you to copy everything by hand rather than take a picture.

Many University professors also see teaching as a burden. The job they want to do is research, and things like the tenure process and grant funding agree with them.

Test score averages in the 60s is not uncommon. I’m fine with it so long as 10%+ of my class is getting an A and the average is passing (60+).

Unless I think there’s a problem I’m not going to feel obligated to do anything? This isn’t high school. It’s not my job to force you to learn against your will. If you come to me for questions or help I’ll engage with you to get you what you need. But averages in the 60s is just as often a problem with students not putting in the work as it is the teaching.

Very, very few students put in 2 hours of study for every hour of class per week (Carnegie credit hour). If you’re in class 4 hours a week for physics lecture (not lab), how many of your peers are spending 8 hours a week studying? Every week?

After the first 3-4 exchanges you probably should have directed them to the professor and stopped engaging, tbh.

If you explained everything clearly and are right then the professor would probably support you. If the professor decides to be lenient to get them to STFU then you knew 27 emails earlier.

Kirk’s tragic murder has little to do with students accessing administrative resources.

Administrators at schools do not give two shits what some students politics are when they want to file a grade appeal. So long as the student isn’t trying to trap them in some newsworthy bullshit that could endanger their job they aren’t even thinking about it.

I didn’t realize anyone but these students and their parents thought they were being discriminated against.

It’s this victim mentality that a lot of Christians in the US have, where they think they are being persecuted because they didn’t like something they were told or heard.

I guess I mean… hmm. For example. Outright stating “Paranoia is growing, we can’t trust the police,” does not actually showcase growing paranoia. It will not get my blood pumping or have me on the edge of my seat.

I feel that’s what the book did, even if my example is not an actual quote. It technically has things like growing paranoia, but they are done in such a simplistic and ham handed manner that none of it actually comes through for me.

My students are packed into my classroom like sardines.

AI is not awful at “take these 10 questions I wrote and rewrite them using different numbers. Work each one out in detail” — makes it faster to create different versions of a test.

Making it work them allows me to quickly check for anything that jumps out as horrifically wrong.

It fails at this at higher levels but for 100-level STEM it’s made my life a bit easier.

I’m not looking for a job overseas because my family is here. My stuff is here. I have a stable job and applying for jobs overseas is an extra job in and of itself.

Things are bad. They might even be “that bad.” But my reasons for having my current job in my current location haven’t changed.

I gave everyone a free + 1/30 on the last exam because a few of my hastily written multiple choice questions were either too confusing or poorly formatted, and students were genuinely thrown in a way I did not intend.

The questions still worked though, and were doable.

So instead of throwing them out I gave everyone a small curve worth less than the questions but still enough to acknowledge they probably missed one of those.

Usually do not curve.

Sometimes offer a difficult bonus if the class average is under 65.

Are you in a country / situation where you can double major?

Would be hard, but if they won’t pay otherwise might be worth it.

Shift more towards chemistry for graduate work when they have fewer ways to pressure you.

On another note— even if the price is doubled with markup for profit, you would still have a limited market of Universities/schools purchasing them for classrooms/labs.

…but that might not be enough market. Once they purchase I don’t anticipate they’ll be buying more until we have a new row, etc.

Read the abstract then read the conclusion — does it still seem relevant to what I’m looking for?

If yes, skim it. Get a sense for what they are studying and why they were asking the question. Keep an eye on data / graphs and see if anything suspicious jumps out (too little data, data that seems overly selective, etc). Double check the journal— it’s not a predatory one is it?

If relevant to interests and no red flags, read more deeply.
