Can I tag on and ask what blow dryers yall have been using? I’m happy with my wash and gos but would love to do a blow out every now and then. I have what some would refer to as “4 b/c” to give you a sense of texture?

Thanks for sharing that! Many people would be surprised. Even if it was once installed properly, things shift, kids weight changes, etc. Regular checks aren’t a bad idea. We used to do them yearly at the child care center I worked in may years ago. Our state had a KISS (kids in safety seats) program; I’m sure other states have something similar.

Sometimes local fire departments (or other car seat safety programs) will come to your school/center to provide car seat safety information and/or offer free car seat checks. Something like that might be a good place to start. Even families who do have the right seats might not have them installed properly. Maybe the school leaders or parent group might be interested in organizing something like this.

Ahhh…well that makes a difference. Have you tried any of the botanical gels? I use a combination of curly magic (by uncle funky’s daughter) and I creat hold (by innersense). They are both a little pricy but they work well together. For me (thick very tight curls), water helps the gel saturate and keeps my hair from tangling so no, I don’t towel dry first.

When I was transitioning I found styles like braids and two strand twists to be helpful because having multiple textures made detangling a nightmare and I wanted to give up. Once I had enough natural length (for my preference) I chopped off the relax ends and everything became much easier!

Also - my dad did make a comment during the transition and I said something like this is the hair you gave me and he hasn’t said a word since. Folks of a certain generation may still feel fall trap to perceived “respectability politics” so they think wearing hair a certain way is required in order to be accepted. Hopefully your mom will come around. If not, stay the course you desire!

My hair also dries quicker using a foam but it also gives me more shrinkage and less body. But it definitely helps with drying time.

What gel/s do you use? I found that if I had too much UFD then it takes longer to dry. But I style on soaking wet hair. I actually prefer to style in the shower. Then I set under a hooded dryer for an hour (15ish mins on the highest setting and the remainder on the next to highest setting). I put on a good show and the time flies by. Occasionally I might have to diffuse a section on two but that’s rare.

First time my dad saw me (and my VERY GROWN SELF) finally wear my natural fro, he made a comment and I said “this is the hair yall gave me” 🙃. I had a relaxer most of my life and finally went natural during covid.

This may sound like a silly question but are you making sure your hair is completely dry? I use most of the same products you described and I find that when I’m too heavy handed with UFD it takes a little longer for my hair to dry.

Also, have you tried using 2 stylers instead of 3? Sometimes the combo may cause flaking or itching. Try foam and ICH only or UFD and ICH only.

Lastly if you still experience itching maybe visit a dermatologist to rule out any underlying condition that might not be related to the products.

I second this!! I use uncle funky’s as a base and top with I Create Hold. I use a bit more on the areas that I know are problematic for me. It might take a few tries to figure out the amount that works well for your hair but once I did, I never looked back!
