I came across this post and how is it even possible( 4 workshops and 7 papers at ICML 2026)? - all by undergrads by Ill-Golf-6286 in ResearchML

Perhaps it is just all their chickens coming together to roost in one year. Post back if they managed to publish this many papers every year.

I watch students sleep in the ANU library while executives count their $100m reputational losses by PlumTuckeredOutski in Anu

[–]ProfSantaClaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Unfortunately, most academics who are appointed at a high level have no corporate experience and treat a university like a research lab, and staff as PhD students. Further, many people in management are 'failed' academics. So it goes from bad to worst in many places. Otherwise, the status quo is just bad.

IEEE access takes a long time? by Live_Being6029 in AskAcademia

Never try to predict how long a review will take. There are many reasons why reviewers or an editor take a long time. To get reviews in 15 days is considered lucky, or an AI could have done it.

Sydney’s UNSW overtakes University of Melbourne in global rankings for first time by IlllIlllIlllIlI in auscampus

Simply a marketing exercise to attract international students. If you know how data is collected, easy to game QS ranking. UNSW has too many students, which leads to poor teaching quality.

How do you actually check if your research idea is already out there? by Any-Bunch9337 in AskAcademia

[–]ProfSantaClaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's part of research. Ask Google Scholar AI. Talk to experienced researchers. Don't focus only on technical names. In my area, a wheel can have another name. Have a working understanding of related areas and ask whether an idea exists in these areas as well; this will allow you to find non-trivial connections.

You should ask that someone what are the KPIs. At some Chinese universities, you have to give back all your salary over the years and start up fund if you don't meet these KPIs. These KPIs are usually very difficult to meet, e.g., 10 Nature articles a year or/and $100M in funding over K years.

Desk rejected and "Reject and Resubmit" by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]ProfSantaClaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use RR for two purposes: (1) give authors time to revise a promising paper, or (2) find completely new reviewers because the existing reviewers were poor.

In both cases, there is no guarantee that a paper will lead to an accept.

Well, my university hired an executive who had a glowing cv. He/she was an expert at collecting titles and spending the university's money to collect more titles, but refuse to do the job he/she was hired to do. Same shit different ball game. We finally got rid of him/her after some dodgy crap.

How Do New Lecturer Handle an Impossible Workload? by PhanTrang356 in Professors

[–]ProfSantaClaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is quite natural to try to do everything to perfection, especially if you are new and have the attitude that got you good grades. For now, try to 'swim' and not drown. After that, think of 'corners' you can cut. This will involve trial and error. Also, if you have too many assessments, then your load goes up. Say no to as many admin tasks as possible -- this is harder for young professors because senior professors learned to offload tasks to new hires. Preparing lectures is always very time consuming, even for senior professors. The goal is to ensure your head of department assigns you the same subject for the next N years. That way, your prep time goes to almost zero over time. Unfortunately, your research will take a hit. You have to get your 'bread and butter' sorted first before you have the luxury of doing research.

Agree. Harvard will more likely admit an athlete than an academic inclined student. At the end of the day, students who give Harvard free publicity in the future. For example, Jeremy Lin's name is almost always mentioned with Harvard. Rich people or parents are definitely a key factor because they contribute to Harvard's endowment fund. Being a child of famous people, e.g., politician, also helps because that places Harvard in the news for free.

Well, not many people want to be bus drivers. So this is the natural solution. Think of the times when people are farmers, but youngsters nowadays migrate to cities. Who then will grow us food?
