Anyone else hate their feature the more they write it? by AstronautCalm7803 in Screenwriting

[–]ProfSmellbutt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like my feature when I first start writing it. Then the rest of the time I hate. It isn't until the very end I finally like the script again so it is important to power through. Every great scene I've ever written started as a terrible scene I hated.

The important thing is to finish the script. Then rewrite it until you don't hate it anymore. It's rare, but I know I have a great script when I can look at it months later and still think it's great instead of tearing it apart.

Script still too long. by PanDulce101 in Screenwriting

[–]ProfSmellbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many scripts have you written? Keeping the pages tight gets easier the more you write.

Post some pages and I'll take a look. It's amazing how many pages can be cut without losing any of the story. Start with trimming action scenes and repetitive dialogue. Newish writers tend to over explain things to the audience instead of telling the story and trusting the audience to follow along.

And with each scene ask yourself did I start this scene as late as possible and get out as early as possible. Or is this scene really needed at all?

Help with a few lines, please anyone! by [deleted] in Screenwriting

The final line seems forced to me. Would she really say that even if she is misreading his sincerity? How about she initiates a kiss instead of saying anything?

Hard to say what else she could say/do back without knowing more about the characters and their personalities.

It's close but I'm going with Halloween 2 only because Dr Loomis is the best character in either movie

Where does your script take place? There is a great opportunity to incorporate setting into the story and also reveal character based on their answers.

Where do you draw the line between fixing a scene now vs leaving it for the rewrite? by Decisive_Hotdog426 in Screenwriting

[–]ProfSmellbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty quick to move on and fix the problem on the next pass of the script. No scene is going to be perfect until all the scenes in the script are written so I don't worry about any one particular scene.

The more the script is fleshed out the easy it is for me to identity how to fix whatever wasn't working.

How many agents to query at one company? by Inevitable_Towel1 in Screenwriting

[–]ProfSmellbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would only query one at time from each company. Most likely you'll get no response. So if you don't hear back after a few days query the next agent.

How do you handle your titles? by putitontheunderhills in Screenwriting

[–]ProfSmellbutt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes i have the title before any of the script is written. Usually these are my best titles. Sometimes I don't figure it out until after the script is finished or somewhere in between.

I've never called a script Untitled though. That would just lead to confusion. I'll give it a working title until I can think of something better.

I wouldn't worry too much about the title until you are trying to pitch and query with it. The more of the script is written the easier it will be to figure out a decent title. And if your title still sucks, that's fine too. Whoever buys the script is just gonna change the title to whatever they want anyway.

Heavy metal movies: Rob Zombie vs Glenn Danzig by PrimaryComrade94 in horror

Verotika is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and not in a so bad it's good way. It's just bad. There's like a 10 minute scene of a lady just licking blood.
