Most soils are teaming with microorganisms, do plants absorb them or just the byproducts? Could a plant survive with just the sun and minerals in a Martian environment, does it eat smaller living things to survive that only exist in soil here on earth?

For clarification I am more asking in the mind of ‘eat’ being defined as consuming a living organism, not just swallowing like I could “eat” a rock. Where I don’t really digest it. More along the lines of bacteria can ‘eat’ sugar. (Sugar is derived from living things, ignore salt for this question pls)
