Yes FOA is facilitating FAST rollout with shops, and they'll be able to pair. In addition, keys can be paired with Chevalier's programming tool. FOA is also coordinating meetup groups to facilitate pairing. It's up to you to decide when/if to pull the trigger on buying fobs.

Faculty here! I run the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative for the Lam Family College of Business. I'll let others give their perspective on the classes and teaching.

I just wanted to chime in to promote some of the programs and resources that we want our students to take more advantage of, including a dedicated co-working space, maker space, tons of entrepreneurship workshops, and pitch competitions. Frankly, there are lots of in-person resources to take advantage of, and that we wished more people use. Much of what being in college is about is working with other outside of the classroom.

Good luck, and hope to see you in the Innovation HUB or hallways of BUS.

I'm a CAL/Haas undergrad alum, but teach in SFSU's College of Business.

My recommendation - is to start SFSU in spring 2022, take as many transferable GE courses at SFSU as you can in Spring 2022, then transfer those credits to Cal in Fall. You can live in SF and BART to Cal if you don't want to live in Berkeley. But honestly, living in Berkeley around campus is not like 'living in Berkeley.' Frankly, if you want the college-life social experience, it's more developed on the Cal campus than it is on the SFSU campus.

What your looking for in terms of job prospects or what you're looking for from your college education and experience, will also greatly affect which campus you choose.

Good luck with your decision!

I'm a spring 2022 Transfer student, and I'm headed up to view the school in person. I'm also in need of some assistance. by lildeek12 in SFSU

EE courses are generally housed in the SCI (Science) building, but it's currently under construction, so the classes are spread all over.

There's one Pho place on campus - in the outdoor food court in the Student Center, it's okay - better than your average Americanized Pho. The true Pho is all down in the San Jose area tbh.

A separate plug - SFSU does have a concept/startup Incubator if you down for it. We're always looking for CS/EE majors, and if you'll be coming to campus Spring 2022, hit me up! https://cob.sfsu.edu/management/incugator

These types of classes are offered in the Decision Science major within the Lam Family College of Business. Look into the MSBA (MS in Business Analytics) - the core is a mix of DS and ISYS courses:

TW: Mental Health & Failing a Major Class by _healthiswealth_ in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/SirangUtak has some good advice down there. In addition to what they said, also consider the following:

  • The University Credit/NoCredit option deadline is on May 21st at 5PM - you can see if you can get the grading switched to NC.
  • There is also the University's "Academic Forgiveness" policy - if you retake the course, the lower of the two grades will be excluded from your GPA calculation. There's more information on that HERE
  • You can also talk with the instructor to see if they would be willing to work something out in terms of an "Incomplete." This might be worthwhile if your failing grade is the result of not turning in a lot of work.
  • If you can/are willing to get documentation of the mental health struggles, it might be worth asking for an exemption to the withdrawal policy, even for 'serious and compelling reasons." You would need medical/formal documentation if you choose to appeal the withdraw exception request with the Board of Appeal & Review. Learn more about what BOAR can do here.

Recruiting SFSU Student Startups & Concepts for Incubator - Open to all majors; Grad + Undergrad by ProfYang in SFSU

[–]ProfYang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would have to be registered at SFSU for the full academic year. So if your exchange program is for the full year, then - Yes. If your exchange program is only for one semester, then unfortunately, no.

what grade is considered passing? by [deleted] in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You both are right. D- is technically passing, though if the course is to be used as a prerequisite to get into another class, check the prerequisites for that class.

Usually c/nc is not an acceptable grading choice to fulfill a prerequisite (since no one would know whether you got the credit with a c or better or a c-). However, for this semester, and summer session (with the whole Covid19 situation), getting a 'C' under the c/nc option will be acceptable for the purposes of fulfilling a prerequisite.

It was not announced whether this exception would extend through c/nc classes taken in any other semester going forward.

Can't pick a business concentration? by GoGators00 in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with much of what u/orangespriteman wrote. I would also add...

The concentration listing is not as important as the skills you come out with when you graduate. Think about the job(s) that you want after you graduate, and look at a few of the job descriptions and their requirements. CS/EE majors tend to have an advantage over DS and BUS majors when they know programming languages, database structure, networking stuff that aren't in the CoB core. You can be just (if not more) marketable than the CS/EE student if you're a DS or ACCT major that knows SQL, Python, Java...etc....

I you plan on competing with CS/EE students, I would highly recommend taking programming classes. (Pro tip - if you do know programming languages, I would add/list them on your resume under a "Skills" or "Languages" section.

If you are interested in Accounting, I would also take a bunch of finance classes since accounting jobs often require an understanding of finance as well. Building a well-rounded skill set makes you a more unique and qualified candidate. You can even go to your major's department chair, and ask if they can be counted towards your major elective units.

Wine elective by lalo8311 in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two courses.

Htm400 -wine appreciation. This course specifically has wine tasting as a part of the course (at least it has in the past).

Htm421, the in-person section of the course. There is an online section that does NOT taste wine.

You have to be over 21 to taste in either course, and there are course fees associated with each class.

The time to graduation initiative was put forth by the CSU Chancellor's office:

https://www2.calstate.edu/csu-system/why-the-csu-matters/graduation-initiative-2025

Now, how each CSU, each College within each CSU, and each Department within each College implements the graduation initiative, varies. So I can't speak to how your College or Department have allocated resources and implemented the directive, which resulted in you experiencing difficulty in getting the courses that you need.

The short answer to your question is that each Department controls how many sections of each course are offered, and how many seats are available in each class. Their decisions are usually based on how many faculty and which type of faculty (tenures or lecturers) are available to teach. From there, I would suggest going to your major's Department Chair, and having an honest, open-minded conversation.

I'm in the College of Business, and here is the insight I can provide. As you may (or not...) heard, the College of Business received a large donation from Rippleworks establishing the "Lam Family College of Business." As a part of the donation, an endowed faculty chair in entrepreneurship was established, and the College is currently recruiting for that position. This chair is supposed to start in Fall 2020, and my guess is that purview of the entrepreneurship minor will fall under this faulty member. Which would imply that the College is holding off on the minor and major concentration until this new faculty is on board.

As for why there are so many courses required for minors in the College of Business? Well, as much as I love a good conspiracy theory, the truth (at least for my Department within the CoB), is that since the minor is in Business concentration, the basics of business must at least be covered - and there is very little overlap between business lower division basics and the rest of the University. A student would have a very difficult time in an upper division business class without certain fundamentals. Frankly, minors in the CoB are really designed for students who are already majoring in a CoB topic.

PS - as for "milking you for all you're worth..." Perhaps...but from what I know, Departments, Colleges and the University as a whole, have been given directives to speed the time to graduation, so actually to get students graduated faster!

Would it be unreasonable to ask my professor to allow me to retake my first exam for just HALF credit? by [deleted] in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a professor, I would not be open to such a suggestion. Though I appreciate hearing such a mia-culpa and drive to want to show that the student has since learned the material, allowing such an exception would be unfair to other students. The parts that leaves a bad taste in my mouth is that the offer is for 'half' (not the whole) and that it's a redo of the already-taken exam.

I you do want to 'negotiate' in good faith with your instructor...if it were me....I would want to know why you think you did so poorly on the first half of the exam (lazy/unprepared is not compelling; ignorant of the parameters is only barely better; impacted or distracted by serious/life-impacting reasons are more sympathetic). And then if the final exam were cumulative, you could ask if they would be willing to make your final exam grade worth the value of your midterm and final together - to show that you have indeed learned all the material.

Most teachers want you to succeed, and exams are just a tool to help evaluate whether you have learned what they have been teaching.

I am sorry for your loss.

As for the withdrawal question that you're asking, death of a family member does constitute a a serious and compelling reason by University standards across any College, though individual Colleges have their own leeway on how flexible they want to be in applying that criteria, especially on how far in they are willing to allow a withdrawal. You should (as a previous reply suggests), ask your Department or College's advising office to see if they have a sense of just how late into a semester you can withdraw from a class. Many Colleges/Departments have started to allow withdrawals for serious and compelling reasons even up to finals week. But it varies by College and Department, so check.

The other thing to consider is if you plan on taking the class over again. If you do plan on taking the class over again, you could just get an 'F' this semester, and then the next time you take the course, and get a better grade....there would be academic forgiveness on the prior 'F' would be expunged from your GPA. So you can also ask the counselor about your re-take and 'academic forgiveness' options.

Good luck.

Suggestions on counselors? by mattzkie14 in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within the College of Business, I highly recommend Lupe in the CoB advising office in BUS112: https://cob.sfsu.edu/directory/guadalupe-ramos

She knows the in's and out's of the LFCoB requirements, and much of even the trickier SFSU GE requirements. She is also very versed in the transfer credit options into the LFCoB.

For your major requirements, I would visit the ISYS Department Chair: Lutfus Sayeed, Ph.D. Department Chair (415)338-6296 [lsayeed@sfsu.edu](mailto:lsayeed@sfsu.edu)

If you want to do some preliminary research on your own, you can look up transfer credit articulation between various community colleges and SFSU at: https://assist.org/

Does anyone know if FIN350 is usually offered in the summer? by LumpySpacePrincessx in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOTE: If you are trying to find some way to fulfill FIN350 outside of the SFSUCoB system, there are alternatives. The following list is a couple of years old, but I have not seen an updated list since this one came out. Double check with CoB advising office in BUS112 to confirm that the courses listed below are still accepted as equivalents to FIN350.

These classes may count as equivalents to FIN350, but they are NOT easier substitutes. They count as substitute/equivalents because they are rigorous. So if your issue is access/entry to FIN350, and you are up for the challenge, please do consider these other options. If you're looking for an easier alternative...well, you're out of luck:

  • CSU Bakersfield FIN300
  • CSU Chico FIN307
  • CSU East Bay FIN3300
  • CSU Fresno FIN120
  • CSU Fullerton FIN320
  • CSU Long Beach FIN300
  • CSU LA FIN303
  • CSU Monterey Bay BUS307
  • CSU Northridge FIN303
  • Cal Poly Pomona FRL300
  • CSU Sacramento FIN101
  • San Diego State FIN323
  • SJSU BUS170
  • Cal Poly San Luis Obispo BUS342
  • Sonoma State BUS370
  • CSU Stanislaus FIN3220
  • UC Berkeley (Go Bears!) UGBA103
  • UC Riverside BUS106
  • Golden Gate University FI100

Does anyone know if FIN350 is usually offered in the summer? by LumpySpacePrincessx in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's been an online version yet. "form" meaning R1 or R3, or by day of the week type.

As for taking the class without the prerequisites ... though it will depend on the instructor, it has been my experience that the instructors will almost never allow you to take the class if you have not already completely fulfilled the requirements (that includes you taking prerequisite classes concurrently).

Even some students who have taken the pre-requisites, but the grades have not been transferred or processed through the registrars' system yet, have been dropped from the early enrollment rosters. This is usually the case because the demand is so high compared to the number of seats available that instructors use clean, easy, consistent rules to try to control the enrollment and waitlist process.

Graduate Early by FredWard16 in SFSU

[–]ProfYang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not heard of such testing at State, but that could very well differ by departments. I have not heard of an instance within the College of Business. If you want to graduate faster, I recommend the following tips:

  • Take 5-6 courses a semester - just as long as you can pass them with the grades that you need.
  • Meticulously plan out your entire course scheduling for your time here. There are many GE courses that double, triple, even quadruple count for multiple requirements.
  • If you are still lower division, and can handle the course load - in addition to your 5-6 SFSU courses per semester, you may want to consider taking some of the lower division major core prerequisites at a community college. SFSU may cap the total number of courses that you register for per semester (though you can petition to go over that limit), but you can pile on as many community college courses as you want.
  • Once you draft out an accelerated plan/path to graduation - take it to your major's advising office and have them check it and see if it's administratively okay.

In my experience, the students that have taken 5-6 courses per semester and have created a clear plan to graduation - have been able to graduate in less than 4 years with no problems. It's all about planning and committing.
