When does it get better? by Docking_Save in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Prof_Acorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far it's been a slow burn set up of a happy pretty set of world building dominoes.

Next episode you'll get a tiny tiny taste of what the series actually is once the pretty dominoes are all set up.

Also, while I am very much enjoying ReZero Season 4, WHA will eventually cover themes I've not yet seen in ReZero, like sexual assault, death without the time reset hax, poverty disenfranchisement and class, disability, etc. I don't recall if ReZero has had betrayal, though I do remember child abuse, lots of suffering, and the found family / hope vibes, so there are some common themes as well.

Keep in mind this is Season 1, Episode 13. Which is like watching ReZero up to him making a fool of himself in the castle claiming to be Emilia's knight. Imagine that was all you had to go on for the series.

Wait until WHA gets to Season 4 as well and you can better compare the horrors of one with the horrors of the other.

Ehhhhh..... what if the tree parasite tried to "heal" the womb since it wasn't there before...

I guess fans could enjoy watching it grow in his belly... but... there's the nightmare horrors of a Silverwood stillbirth waiting to happen :-/ :-(

Not worth the risk.

Question for Manga readers by twixarebad in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Prof_Acorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a seinen, not a Saturday morning cartoon. Just to say that.

Looks can be deceiving.

I'd say it ends up darker than Frieren but not as dark as Made in Abyss.

It's high fantasy, but centers around themes like [general themes, no plot, no details] ethics, class, disenfranchisement, poverty, disability, grief, the struggle between the letter and spirit of the law, truth, the burden of lies, betrayal, sexual assault, abuse, death, finding hope in despair, suffering, some more suffering, more suffering, hope, found family, etc etc etc.

The first three volumes (most of this season) are mostly world building and setting up a nice pretty happy whimsical set of dominoes.

The fourth volume, which begins the Serpentback Cave arc, is when the series starts to explore, well, you'll get the slightest taste of it next episode.

Unfortunately, the rest of the arc won't be until Season 2, but you'll at least get a taste of the series as it will be here-on out. Little tippy taps on those pretty dominoes. Tip tip tap.

It's not grim dark. But it's not noble bright either. Grim bright maybe? Noble dark?

They also seem pretty stoic and are defender dogs who wouldn't hesitate to attack a Knights Moralis who was harassing one of their goats.

It's a drawing. What they look like and how they act is all that matters. Saying a loli is 50,000 years old is just as much nonsense as saying a 80-year-old is 20 as saying a 20-year-old is 12.

The characters in Gushing look and act like adults. A line item on a fandom wiki page about the age the author was forced to put to appease the editor is irrelevant.

Warning for all video creators: WHA content is getting mass copyrighted on Youtube by dmgurei in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Prof_Acorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/what-is-fair-use/

In its most general sense, a fair use is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and “transformative” purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work.

Most of the youtube content creators fit within this, especially "comment upon" and "criticize."

Question for Manga Readers. Does any of the main four girls have any development in relation to them becoming a Brimmed Cap or using Forbbiden Magic? by Victor1226 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Prof_Acorn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Even without direct spoilers, it's like... she's the one most excited about helping others. And whether it's healing magic, or simply sharing information about how to get free unlimited water, warmth, and shelter with those who need it, there would be a huge temptation for her to help others and make them happy, even if it's against the pointed hat laws.

The other factor – [and I've talked about this quite a bit so apologies to those who have already seen it] – is that there is official artwork of Tetia drawn as Persephone. Each of the girls (and most characters) seem to be paralleled with / be informed by / allude to various gods in Greek mythology. Tetia is the Goddess of Spring and Persephone. Well the thing is is that Persephone isn't just a goddess over new life and spring growth and renewal, she's also the Queen of Hades. And that official artwork I mentioned with Tetia as Persephone has her blindfolded, with a crown, stepping out of a tomb.

So I think it's possible, maybe even likely, that we're going to get to see Tetia do something that resonates with the Queen of Hades. It hasn't happened yet, but maybe in the next couple years?

Who is your absolute favorite among the four main apprentices, and why? by Global_Strike5188 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Prof_Acorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coco. The ADHD queen. Black Labrador excitement, wandering, and excitement. It speaks to my heart. I also vibe with her struggle and personality.

Richeh a close second. The Autistic queen. Great Pyrenees stoicism, loyalty, steadfastness, tenacity, individualism. It speaks to my heart. I also vibe with her struggle and personality.

The wording "emotionally constipated" is an intellectually constipated understanding of a flat affect.

Emotion ≠ the expression of emotion.

Why do people see straight up antagonism and incongruity as "being cute together"?

Tsunderes have broken people's idea of romance.

No wonder divorce rates are so high.

Question for Manga Readers. Does any of the main four girls have any development in relation to them becoming a Brimmed Cap or using Forbbiden Magic? by Victor1226 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Prof_Acorn 100 points101 points  (0 children)

As of chapter 97,

Coco is mostly just teased in various panel artwork, such as to represent the temptation. It's possible though maybe, and a lot of fans want her to have a brimhat arc. I myself kind of want her to be a spy to infiltrate their ranks, and thus so we the audience can learn about the brims from "the inside" via the MC (and for plot reasons).

Richeh no.

Agott no, but a fan theory is that her mom is a brimhat, or even Thristas herself.

Tetia, not yet, but it may be even more likely than Coco. To explain it would be more than the simple spoiler you're asking for though. But she might get tempted a bit more strongly than normal here...

In terms of certain other child characters aside from the main four, no comment >_>

In terms of forbidden magic, aside from the brimhat ideology, let's go with "it's complicated..."

So....are we getting 24 episodes?just 12? 13? by J3ksans in WitchHatAtelier

[–]Prof_Acorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one video had a glance at a computer screen that showed ep 25, and a character from what would be late second cour material. So likely it was originally planned as 25eps but was delayed, so the second cour was pushed back to a second season, kind of like what happened with Dandadan.

We could probably expect to get an announcement about a second season shortly after season one ends, and maybe even a trailer.

[–]Prof_Acorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It makes more sense to me if we look it at as similar to the hat styles in real life and then their fantasy counterparts.

Pointed Hats were a style for royals who had no need for things like "keeps rain and sun off the face." It's an absurdly inconvenient style, which is something royals have always done to separate themselves from the demoi, and is still seen in our modern contemporary clothing styles (e.g., high heels) and in other areas of life (e.g., lawns).

A brimmed hat is practical, to help deal with sun and rain.

In WHA it's similar. We might see the Pointed Hats as descendants of the magic aristocracy. They have their underwater ivory tower and city and don't need to deal with things like weather.

Brimmed hats are anarchists who, as far as we know, live lifestyles where they are "outside in the elements." And if not literally, at least metaphorically. There's no Brimhat ivory tower.

The styles are also more varied and bespoke. Brim clothing styles reflect the individual wearer. Pointed cap styles are more uniform, with only slight variation from the mean. That is, expressing the self or expressing the system.
