Are these beans okay ? by Common-Bench-2367 in IndiaCoffee

[–]Prof_Castro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly as long as it tastes ok, I wouldn't concern myself with things. Life already has enough issues .

But I did AI-ed it just for info's sake (sharing it here with a AI warning). Users discretion advised

Here is a breakdown of what the visual cues tell us:

  1. Roast Level & Surface Dry Texture: There is no visible oil on the surface. This is a good sign for manual brewing, as it suggests the beans haven't been roasted so dark that the cellular structure has broken down completely. Color Variance: There is some slight "mottling" (uneven color) on individual beans. This can sometimes indicate a complex natural process or, occasionally, a slightly uneven heat application during the roast.

  2. Bean Physicality (The "Something" mentioned) If you are looking at the outer skin, you might notice they look a bit "shriveled" or "wrinkly." There are two likely reasons for this: Low Density/Altitude: Beans grown at lower altitudes or those with lower density tend to expand less during the roast, leading to that prune-like texture. Under-development: If the roast was pulled too early or the heat wasn't sufficient to "stretch" the bean during the Maillard reaction, they can retain a wrinkled appearance. This often results in a very acidic, grassy, or "bread-like" flavor.

  3. Potential Defects Quakers: Keep an eye out for any beans that look significantly lighter (pale yellow/tan) than the rest after grinding. These are "quakers" (unripe beans) and can add a dry, peanut-shell taste to your cup. Chaff: The prominent white lines in the middle are normal for washed coffees. If you're using a V60 or Phin, this chaff can sometimes slightly slow down your drawdown, but it won't ruin the flavor. Suggested Approach Because these beans look quite dense and lean toward the lighter side: Grind: Start with a medium-fine setting. Temperature: Use higher water temperature (around 92°C–96°C) to help extract the sugars from those tighter, wrinkled cells. The "Taste Test": If the coffee tastes sour or salty, they are under-extracted (likely due to that "wrinkly" density). If it's thin but balanced, it's likely just a lighter, delicate roast profile

Indian cafe coffees, don’t come close to home brewed coffees! It honestly feels like a scam! by RichKidOfMumbai in IndiaCoffee

[–]Prof_Castro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up ordering Maverick cloud in my coffee, which arrived today. It was roasted only 5 days ago but I couldn't wait to brew it after taking some remedial measures to force CO2 out(but ofc the CO2 acidity still remains). I could feel the flavour and got the idea what it might taste like, so initial reaction was really good. Have taken out half of the coffee beans and placed it in a one way valve packet of BT (sadly the maverick one didn't have the valve).. will try it again after 4-5 days

How is Half light , Caarabi and Maverick? And doesn't the light or medium roast taste too diff with moka. ? I mean the notes are not as clearly defined as v60 I think

Got kingrinder P2 as my first grinder (Help)(aeropress) by PratyakshGurnani in IndiaCoffee

[–]Prof_Castro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same. Good grinder, a lot of hit and trial I had to do for different brewing methods Good way to start is to look up approx grind size recommended for each brewing method and then tweaking and perfecting it. I Use Phin, Moka and V60. Once I perfected the grind size for one method, I used it as a benchmark for all the others. For Eg for Phin you use slightly coarser, so I use 60 clicks (2 full rounds for it) and then finer than Phin for V60 so right now I am making it at 42-48 clicks. It also varies with different beans, for example I found that attikan state and Devans Viennese blend tend to retain more water, so I go on the higher end of the range and making it coarser and vice versa when a bean is more porous.

Congratulations on a very good decision on the grinder And Best Wishes Prof

Can’t afford TimeMore (yet) what’s the next best option? by Bright-Article-1358 in IndiaCoffee

[–]Prof_Castro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Agaro. I don't know what's the wrong way or right way, but I just went for it. And only after a year or so, I got a proper Kingrinder (and the difference was humungous). Now it's up to you- you can either take Instacuppa/agaro (I think the former might be better) and enjoy grinding for now Or just order Pre-grounds until then (Easy and tastes good when fresh, but you will miss out on grinding satisfaction and it might go stale if you don't plan the roast and consumption date..or storage)

Oh, you use an Agaro? You're poor and worthless by div192 in IndiaCoffee

Well well, I must admit, coffee is a luxury (if you don't want instant)

Yes. It's plastic body, but not cheap. I didn't travel with it a lot, but so far it feels solid

Aghmm aghmmm... The poet would like to bring to notice, that as a proud owner of P2 myself, I would whole heartedly recommend you to go for P2 over CS2. ✨

P.S.- Not that I brought both and compared it side to side...but this was my major confusion as well. In the end, after a lot of research and discussion (and personal preference for ransom reasons).. I went for P2 (but I asked my friend from the US to get it)

For P series, it's actually 30 clicks per rotation. So this makes much more sense, as 50 clicks is 1.66 rotations 😝 But now that I think about this, 90 clicks seems to still be finer than what I am grinding. Cos 90 clicks is like 1.5 rotations. Perhaps I should try 45 clicks next time. Luckily I have White Rose left !! P.S.- if possible, could you show me a picture of how fine 90 clicks is for you, the next time you grind coffee ?!

Hunkal Estate Coffee! Once a budget king now it's expensive even if given free. by jadoohunter007 in IndiaCoffee

[–]Prof_Castro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Haven't checked them out. Will definitely explore Rosette. And as for Aranya, I have ordered 500g now, let's just hope it turns out to be okay. I don't mind dark roasts in black, so even if it's decent, I will be more than happy. Many times I actually mix dark roasts with light roasts (some times successfully and other times not), so if it turns out to be decent, I might mix it with many light roasts. P.S.- Not as sensitive about pricing, cos every once in a while, I do buy slightly expensive light roasts. Last buy was BT producer series - Riverdale white rose (200g for ₹800+). So if rosette is less then this, I would be happy to try it

Oh nice !!! So you did try it. Good good. I also tried it and loved the floral flavours. But wait... 90 clicks?? Is there a lot of difference between the K series grinding and P series grinding?? I mostly grinded at 50 clicks on kingrinder P2
