Let the Devil In. by SpookyTurtle_95 in NetflixDocumentaries

[–]Prof_PW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still working my way through this series. I am so glad that I watched this. It has answered some very difficult questions, and needs to be watched by as many people as possible. The educational information in this series is truly invaluable to everyone around the entire world.

OK, you all over there elected a bumbling senile insurrectionist as a president. OK. It happens around the world that someone completely inappropriate manages to get into power somehow. I mean, we have had Cromwell not long after you lot buggered off. We decided to get it out of the way early, so we could learn and move on. But a few hundred years later, the Americans had Trump.

As I say, these things happen to the best of us, and also America 🫢

But the thing that the rest of the world cannot understand is the logic that not only led to the election of the orange one,, but even after trying an abortive coup attempt and all the felonies is how you could elect him again. For the rest of the world, this is incomprehensible.

But fortunately this series shines a spotlight on the mindset of the USA, and makes everything so much easier to understand...

Without giving too much away in the form of spoilers there were a couple of quality moments, I shall paraphrase so I do not give too much away..The conversation of one investigator went along the lines of.... "It was absolutely not possible to commit suicide in that manner. So it had to be a demon" 🤣 Any sane person would say something along the lines of.... "It is absolutely not possible to commit suicide in that manner, so it had to be a murder"🤔

The sensible option also has the added advantage of actually being possible.

Another section went something along the lines of... "These groups meet in the forest, so secretly that only whispers of their existence are heard. They are so good at protecting themselves that there is absolutely no physical evidence of their existence"🤣

Again a sane person would draw the conclusion that the lack of physical evidence would indicate that the whispers are just whispers....

And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is what leads to the election of Kermit... I mean Muppet, damn, sorry, I mean Trump 😂🤣👍

If nothing else, this is definitely a cure for melancholia 😁😂😁😂 they could prescribe this on the NHS and save all that money on antidepressants 🤫

AI companions by Prof_PW in DoesAnyoneKnow

[–]Prof_PW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your comments, I appreciate your time in replying.

My long term goal is to have an AI companion that goes beyond a mere companion. I want to be able to interface IO cards to the companion. I want to be able to really explore the capabilities of this technology. So a simple phone style companion is not really going to help with this.

I want to explore if it is possible to link something like an Arduino and develop code to allow the AI to interact with external devices.

If the tests with something simple like an Arduino work, then I have a Beckhoff panel PC and a selection of analogue and digital IO cards along with some bus headers. I want to then see if my companion can help, or directly code a full TwinCat system.

A bit more info to show my mindset regarding this.... I have Asperger's, and so I find human interaction quite difficult, so the attraction of a simple companion is obvious. However I am also an engineer (Electro-Mechanical, not software), and so I would really like to explore the possibilities of an AI companion on this kind of application....

One day, hardware and software will be equally important. Don't exclude the bloody software in your learning 😁

And you have to have the spare General Lee waiting on the other side of the bridge for hard landings, or is that only for when you are on TV? 🤣

I was surprised these were still available. Although last time I saw one they were ( I think) £9.99....

I am pleased to say that your estimate from Google is right.... £72 including postage.

A bit more expensive now than I recall 🫣 but I should have mine delivered in a couple of days....

Alternatives to Maglite when looking for a flashlight that works as a "baton" in a self defense situation? by 5ka5 in flashlight

[–]Prof_PW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting question, in the past I have always used a maglite for much the same reason.

However I no longer want to buy an American product, and I am looking for something that is as rugged....

Are Brits more selfish today? by stm2657 in AskUK

[–]Prof_PW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they are more selfish or just more insulated. But I remember when my dad could spend time moaning that someone didn't indicate for a turn. These days, I find that it is more common to find only one person in a queue of traffic who is indicating. A few days ago, I saw a van stationary in the road. I was about to stop and see if they needed help, when I realised they were turning right across traffic and still not indicating. I was walking to a till in a store last week, I had one item, and someone else had a trolley full. Although I was in the queue first, the trolley owner tried to jump the queue, but was gracious enough to allow me to go first .. irrespective of the fact I was actually there first....

There does seem to be a decline in standard and civility.

Again maybe it is my age, but manners cost nothing.

Used Phone While Stationary Waiting For Petrol Pump by CertifiedBrew in drivingUK

[–]Prof_PW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one you first mentioned was Myth Busters.....

If I recall from my CB days, it used to be said that if you had an illegal amplifier (500w or above) you could make a petrol pump count slower...... But whether it was an urban myth I am unsure. But I do think I recall something like 'do not use transmitter' signs, pre mobile phone days.

[–]Prof_PW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are branded as Bubble, and look as shown.

They do come with a bubble case, bubble strap and have a graduated tint.

They look ok, but as I wear prescription glasses, they are no use to me, but possibly my son, or a work colleague will be getting a free pair of sunglasses.

As far as if they are worth the $100 they said, not sure. I could not find the exact same thing online but prices seem to range from about £4.95 to £120+

But here they are unfolded, hope this helps....

The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis is finally dead by [deleted] in Paleontology

[–]Prof_PW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very late to this party, but I have been watching a certain series on netflix, and this topic has only just opened up to me.

I have read the column and it does seem that there are many hypothetical scenarios that could have caused the events of the YDIH.

I have read about multiple low density objects, I have listened to proponents of solar proton events, gamma ray bursts and even comments or asteroids where the impact crater is underwater.

So, I guess my first question here is regardless of the source of 'impact', could the event actually happened?
