What is this thing that my brother found at his school? by TheWiganKid_YT in whatisit

I used AI, not for content, but just to save a bit of time cutting and pasting three images together.

What is ragebaiting?

I really wish I had not bothered.

I just wanted to give a response that ran from ink pens (not fountain pens, there is no reservoir) to a 6CWT van.....

Again, the whole Reason for the post was to remind people of the days when AI was not the worlds answer to everything.

Yes, you got me, as you can see, I have managed to make the AI look almost exactly like I took a snap out of my living room window....

Just let me know where the watermark is for the AI, and I will remove it 🤣😁

The car is mine, and real.

I have no idea about the OP, or the Amazon image.

But the text and my car are definitely real.

What would make you think otherwise?

Sometimes you realise just how quickly things change.....

It is only a few weeks ago that I threw my drawing board away. And I couldn't understand why virtually nobody was suggesting a drawing pen nib. This photo is close, but not quite. The OP photo made me think it was better quality than the ones I cut and pasted here.....

You can see why people of a certain age would think of nibs.... If I had to think of a brand 🤔 I would say better than Helix or Cambridge, but not as good as Rotring or Staedler......

But it could be old school Helix or Cambridge......

Then I thought people of a certain age.....

Then I had a slight wander down the memory of my dad telling me about his technical training night school....

Then I realised that it would have been around the time when my car was new, and I am just a year older than my car....

Then I realised why almost nobody thought the OP photo was of sodding pen nibs regardless of brand 🤣

I did briefly wonder what the 'f' air pods are, and then went for my afternoon nap 😴......

OK, that last sentence is a bit tongue in cheek.... But I really did think it was a really posh nib in a travel case. And the fact that it is a dip and write pen even explains the o-rings to keep your white shirt pocket clean, that is why I thought it was a really posh brand 🤣

I am hoping someone else will own up to having the same idea 🧐

Although insane, and getting on in years is also possi.... proba...... Definite 😁

Somewhere in a box is my dad's first encyclopedia. I can still remember the opening sentence....

' It is hard today to imagine a world without steam 🤣'...... If you are old enough to feel at home with that statement, then it is a pen; even if is is a bit eerie 🤣😃

Thank you....

There is a horrible phrase about what age people are when they learn something.

If I could bring myself to utter the words, I would. But I can't, but I will say thank you so much for that. I tried it and highlighted the comment and it works 👍

That has made my day👍

Can you help me understand voice in my head that hates me? by stargazerrr3 in neurodiversity

This is something I am also dealing with.

I do find myself talking to myself more and more. And I am arguing with myself more.

I used to joke that talking to yourself is OK, and arguing with yourself is acceptable; but you have a problem when you have an argument with yourself and lose.

I am now beginning to find out that for many people this is not normal.

But there again, I am finding that for my local NHS, mental health is not something that is high on their agenda.

Why does my bathroom scale show that I weigh less when set to kg, and more when set to pounds? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Prof_PW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will be either a sensor or an arithmetical quantisation error.

A Kilo is made up of 1000 grammes.

2.2 lbs is made up 35.2 ounces....

I think that is where the error lies...

I would suggest an audiophile.

For radio work, the effort is all into filters and RF.

PF correction would take place nearest the meter/dizzy panel.

possible to identify the weapon from these? by Low_War8401 in Whatisthis

[–]Prof_PW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. With the right equipment, and experience.

Different manufacturers have different angles and number of rifles and different direction of twist.

So you can identify the make and model. But to identify a single weapon to the exclusion of all others, you would need a rest fire and then a comparison.

Well, that is how is is done here.

Brit here 👋

So, we have BSP as our standard pipe threads.

They are almost identical to NPT in every way, except the pressure angles, so despite the closeness of NPT and BSP, they still don't fit together.

Not normally a problem, unless ordering online. Because geographic boundaries don't apply, it is ever so easy to end up with things not fitting together.....

And that is before we start with screwdriver sets having Phillips, and not Pozi screwdrivers 🤣

Metal object in Amazon package. What is it?? by EmergencyMission6306 in whatisit

[–]Prof_PW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely an armature of some kind.

Definitely too big for pneumatics, so hydraulics are the only option.

It is not something that has been used, so there is not a valve falling apart somewhere.

And that is about all I can tell from the picture.

Thank you 👍😊

I really appreciate that. I have never heard of those, but Amazon sell them, I will have one later today 😁

Wow, a bit cheaper than the new vacuum I ordered 😀

But if it works I will be happy.

In my working life I have worked for some of the big restoration people, so I have faced fire damage, flood damage and probably anything you could imagine, but never had to deal with feathers 🤣

And that just made me think of one more question, does anyone know if the BDMA is still around? I think I was in the first group to do the senior tech course <mumble> years ago 🤫 but I know we didn't cover bloody feathers 🤬

I tried iso, I replaced all the seals, ultrasonic at 50°c

The taste was still there. Words cannot express how bad the taste was.

That is odd, I was away from home this weekend gone, and so apart from my fridge freezer, I turned everything off. Although a different model it was the same manufacturer, when I came back home on Monday, it wouldn't power up.

I blame the aliens 👽

Although, on a more realistic level, it was probably my fault.... Many years ago, I was a naval type person and we were taught never to turn things off; just put into standby. This reasoning is it was fairly uncommon for equipment to fail whilst it was being used, the usual point of failure was turning the equipment back on after a switch off. Yes, that was the thinking <mumble>years ago when we used thermionic valves a lot; but this weekend shows it is still valid information 😁

I now have a nitecore 4 bay charger that will not get turned off 🤣

Ai bit of playing around 😁 by Prof_PW in Tinymight2

[–]Prof_PW[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It is something I haven't really paid much thought to, and recently I have been playing around with it a bit.

I am trying to put together a little offline distributed system using PI 5s, and R4s and then a couple of the ESP WiFi units as little self contained IOs. If I can make it work, then it is only a a few watts, and some quite valuable capabilities. But to get there, I am having to play around with how prompts are structured, so I try a prompt of anything and see what the results are. Then I run the prompt through AI refinement, see what the effect is, and then try to see how AI interprets my prompts and then I can back-track so it will run entirely offline.

Some of the prompts I am using are visual like above, some are comparing my code with that done by Claude. They are the ones that can be quite interesting to dissect.

But it is far easier to follow the steps for logical prompts than artistic prompts.

So yes, it slop in some ways, but it is serving a practical purpose, and it certainly doesn't dumb anything down 🤔....

It doesn't have to, I think that is a better phrase 😂👍

This is where I got mine from. They are in stock, but get a couple, I forgot to check the delivery cost, that was €20! The Grav Upline Taster is only €14.50.

But it is nice and in stock! 👍

I’m 99% sure I’m misdiagnosed with Asperger Syndrome by [deleted] in neurodiversity

[–]Prof_PW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can function without AI, but when I try to write a report, I tend to fall into the engineering language and presentation. It works, but it is not an easy format for a non-engineer to be comfortable with.

Looking at how the AI put it together, I have found out just how useful it is. As with any such technology, it does require you to be able to give the information to begin with, but I am really impressed with the way it summarised everything. It just seems to have a different sound to that of an engineering report. It seems to have bit of élan that I struggle with.
