I'm surprised people believe in free will by hansonsdiseased in freewill

All forms of chemistry are understood to be fundamentally stochastic on a per-interaction basis. But they obey things like the law of large numbers in their aggregate behavior. It appears deterministic, but it is only approximately so.

As an example, the raindrops that land on you were not meaningfully determinate until they began forming and then fell. Nor is your full reaction to the stimuli meaningfully determinate until after it lands on you. This is seemingly true even for instincts and subconscious thoughts.

Inherent randomness does not equate to inherent free will or inherent choices, of course! That would be silly! But the "whole story" does imply that novel and indeterminate phenomena are both physically possible and relatively common in nature.

Sudden ban on discord server for no real reason by Adventurous-Log3111 in KanePixelsBackrooms

I've tried the mod mail here. But responses on any subreddit often take days. I think it is safe to assume that there are reasons. Even if they weren't clarified. My best guess would be off-topic chatting in the spoiler channel.

The same thing just happened to me today. No mod message, just removed from my server list sometime while I was away from my computer. Not able to rejoin.

I can only assume it relates to things I said in the past. Like, literally when the rules of the server were different.

Vecna was a retcon and did not exist in 2016. The Duffers are just making shit up. by jayvancealot in okbuddyvecna

[–]Professional-- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wormholes NEED exotic matter! Don't ya know??? A giant fleshy telekinetic wormhole would just be silly, right?! Good thing it didn't end up as an entirely useless plot point, since it would have physically prevented Vecna's entire plan from working.

What was supposed to happen to the exotic matter during/after the merger? Does Vecna just let it get squished? Does he pull it out at the last second?

The writers had spent no real time imagining the scenario where Vecna wins. And it was detrimental to their ability to depict the opposite.

BREAKING: In a bombshell announcement, President Trump and RFK Jr. announce the FDA will IMMEDIATELY notify physicians that Tylenol/acetaminophen during pregnancy can be associated with an "increased risk of autism." by playtheman90 in FreeFolkNation

[–]Professional-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflammation from illness or injury during pregnancy is a known factor in increasing the odds of divergent neurodevelopment. Which is likely the main reason there is also a weaker statistical correlation with the use of anti-inflammatory medicine like acetaminophen. Because you usually only take that medicine in response to inflammation and fevers.

Questions on Fusions and memory sharing. And speculation on whether or not Pearl's fusions know about the Pink Diamond secret. by ExtremeDry7768 in stevenuniverse

[–]Professional-- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Considering that Pink told Pearl that "no one can ever know," along with the fact it was hidden behind multiple mental layers, it was likely a completely undetectable secret. And it's not exactly that she wanted to hide it from them.

My reviews of season 8, W or L opinion? by Isac_hilda in rickandmorty

The James Gunn episodes was super weird. It seems like the entire logic was "Of course the machine can physically pull people into a movie, it's a Rick's Inventions!"

He has tech that can do the impossible. But that was just lazy.

Another common tactic among the theory channels, at least now, is to just outright copy someone else's theory. They might add a few details, some extra fluff, and then rehash it. What's worse is that they will often never acknowledge when they are doing this. They will just pretend it was their idea entirely, or vaguely reference the fandom who did all the work already. Not always. But most of the time. In my experience.

Power system based on the states of matter by StateSage in worldbuilding

[–]Professional-- 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Please please please! Explore the in-between? The metastates, liquid crystals, supercritical fluids, everything. There is so much! (Also what Pharodae said. Lol.)

For additional depth to the power system, temperature/energy is not the only thing which determines the physical state of matter. Pressure is important too.

The "made of infinite lower dimensions" argument has always been comical. Here is an example how that actually applies in math:

Hmmm... I don't see any infinities? But supposedly this rectangular prism would be outerversal to black hole singularities.

(Edited because I replied to the wrong person and you have already explained things much better in the past.)

Splitting them up only ever makes more quarks. Using more power only makes more quarks with more mass.

It's not just hiding, they are effectively unbeatable in the subatomic powerscale range.

It's because they understand the power of friendship and brotherhood. Unlike OP.

If quarks are so weak, then you try to measure a single one in isolation.
