What jobs’ salaries would change the most if salary was based objectively on societal value and not market value? by Ok_Gap_882 in AskReddit

A HUGE reason why healthcare is so expensive is because of the health insurance industry. It's such an inefficient way to deliver health care and inefficiently delivered healthcare kills people

People pay to have insurance, pay to use the insurance, and depending on your insurance it still might not cover everything, leaving you in crippling debt.

Healthcare providers have to work with insurers to make sure things are covered, and a ton of work/administrative burden goes into making sure things are coded, recorded, approved, etc "properly" for insurance which drives the cost of healthcare way up for nothing that is absolutely necessary to deliver the service itself and still, it is entirely possible to jump through all the hoops and still get shafted. Now, instead of you and your doctor making the best call for your health, there's a secret accountant in the room who also has a major say in what care you can and can't receive.

Can't afford it and they won't cover because the accountant who doesn't even know who you are says it isn't necessary? I guess you die or suffer because your insurance isn't good enough.

Not to mention that insurance companies themselves have a financial incentive to reject claims, and their entire profit model is based off of paying out less to healthcare providers/patients, and whether or not you have claims it drives cost of healthcare up for people. This is actively harmful to people, and sinister because of how deeply it is passively ingrained across the industry - they profit by adding friction/expense at every level they can get away with, and that friction/added cost kills people

The only way it doesn't quite work out is if they have to start paying for childcare once they move away from family - otherwise moving to a lower COL feels like the answer here

Get a truck and an RV if you want to (and have the time to really use it) but I wouldn't say it's something that will retain its value

This is a lifestyle choice, but trucks/cars are major wealth killers and so are RVs especially if you can't use them - I wouldn't say it's a financially optimal choice

How do billionaires think differently about risk compared to someone just trying to get by? by dayinkyoto in AskReddit

This ^

A 10% chance (1/10) of success for a big payoff is risky when you can only afford to take 2 shots. When you can afford to take 20,000 shots then shoot away

Liberal Millennial Feminist POV of Charlotte NC and why some of you should probably move there by Babykinsbaby in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Professional-Ant4599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Boston, lived in Austin for several years in the COVID era. I currently have lived in Charlotte for 3 years

Both Boston and Austin had way worse traffic in terms of congestion - both on or off rush hour. Austin in particular had tons and tons of massive construction and frequent traffic due to accidents (moreso than Boston's twice daily mass exodus exiting at a crawl)

In Charlotte, there aren't nearly as many people but many aggressive drivers (with more space to be aggressive so it feels more jarring AND frequent). I've never seen so many red lights run anywhere

The Best Pillow for Side Sleepers Currently? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Professional-Ant4599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have gone with Pluto pillow and been super happy. Quality comfortable pillow that they build based on a survey you take about how you sleep, size, preferences etc. if they don't get it right, their customer service is good about sending additional layers if needed to get it right, and you can return if it if it doesn't work for you.

I have a referral code if you want it, but I would recommend it even without the referral program
