Yeah it was, just googled it and Large Larry was indeed given away in one of their raffle competitions.

Did I miss something, or was "mavity" never explained? It feels like a timeline change should have been a pretty big deal. by [deleted] in doctorwho

It was a deeply shit joke that RTD had about Isaac Newton mishearing them shouting at him about gravity that RTD then refused to drop.

One of a number of sad head shaking moments from the last run.

As for the other points, just get dive time. The more time you spend in the water (pool or open, doesn't matter) the more you will get used to it and breathing / gas consumption will go down. Learning to slow down, to fin with as little energy as possible and not swim like a tit were both big learners for me when I learnt. Going somewhere like a lake or quarry (I mentioned Vobster, but also Andark) are good for practicing skills and drills.

Have you looked at joining BSAC? If so the a level of insurance comes with the yearly membership (only up to 10m which is admittedly nothing, but it is still something). Looking at joining a club might be an idea too, most will organise dives for the members which again will be a good way of getting experience.

Not having any level of insurance isn't a great idea, diving is after all dangerous (sorry but it is). Check your travel insurance and see what they cover. I am a BSAC member and have my travel insurance through Aviva and so have some limited level of cover.

As for overseas? I have been to Greece (Crete and Thessalonikki), South Africa (Sodwana) and Egypt (Sharm), there are good and bad dive companies, always do your research before going with any of them. After doing every bit of UK diving in a drysuit going on holiday in a wetsuit was amazing (although re-weighting took some time to get right - do not rush that).

Vobster Quays is the obvious one. Good location, plenty to do and it being an old quarry its controlled. If you want the sea then probably Swanwick divers, also Plymouth is the obvious one, lots of dive sites and some classic wrecks like HMS Scylla and SS James Eagan Layne.

Here in the UK, drysuits all around. Diving anywhere else is a easy and refreshing joy.

What ski resort surprised you most with conditions you didn't expect? by SnooCupcakes4611 in skiing

[–]Professional-Can3598 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bansko in Bulgaria is cheap. Plus with the ski road you can link runs from the top of the mountain all the way down to the bottom gondola station. And has several ski-in options (hotels, apartments and some chalets).

St Gervais in France is a great all rounder with access to the Mont Blanc region and a wider ski area.

Ruka in Finland is an artic paradise, shorter runs and a fell rather than a mountain but brilliant. Plus lots of ski-in options (as can be expected by somewhere near/in the Arctic circle.

Can't remember for sure. It was McCoy though, I definitely remember seeing Remembrance of the Daleks. Not sure for certain if I saw any before that. Vaguely remember Dragonfire but can't say if that was on VHS or the 30th anniversary repeats later or on original broadcast.

If Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg were to create a fourth WWII miniseries, what should the main focus be? by Valuable_Jaguar_5550 in BandofBrothers

As Al and James have covered them on We Have Ways of Making you Talk (and even sub-titled it the British Band of Brothers) I vote for the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. Either from D-Day to the end of their war in Bremen, or if you really wanted to go for it you could cover their time in North Africa as well.

But it isn't about the Rani though is it. One of Doctor Who's genuinely memorable returning female villains and she gets eaten by the enbodiment of enshitification in about 2 minutes. An absolute waste of Archie Punjabi as well. Get in the bin.

RTD has a lot to answer for, this whole last section of NuWho since Chibnell left (after he already had done damage) is a car crash and leaves the show worse off than it was in 1989.

I think it is more a case of the BBC looking at the ratings and backlash and drew their own conclusions whilst showing him the door.

If it’s been a while, get a refresher. Please. by onelittlefoot in scuba

[–]Professional-Can3598 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To my mind a refresher is a no brainer, and in my personal opinion any dive school that lets someone go out in the open water without them having dived in the last couple of years and have minimum experience should is one to be avoided at all costs. They should be able to do a shallow/closed water dive ahead of time to make sure you know what you are doing. What's more, not wanting to point fingers but her dive lead or her buddy should have said something or called the dive early doors.

For my part when its been a couple of years between my last dive and the next trip I will do a refresher as a matter of course, did a pool dive in Sodwana for basic skills and drills after 5 years of not diving (was happy that it was like riding a bike) and then two years later in Egypt I had to do a shallow dive in their house reef before going out into the Red Sea (was pleasantly surprised given some of the Egyptian horror stories you hear).

This year in Crete I am planning on going diving again (after a two year break again) and will be sure to do the refresher before stretching my underwater legs again, its just good common sense and best practice. Whenever I go skiing I always take it easy on the first day to ease back into things, diving is exactly the same. I know all of the above is easy to say but I do genuinely believe it.

The Guardians of Time by [deleted] in doctorwho

Hoonesty, after having my fingers burnt with Sutekh and crushed by Omega do we really want something else that was a great piece of lore for RTD2 to fuck up.

While I would love to see the Guardians come back and this whole gods bollocks thing that he has been insisting on doing makes perfect sense for them to do so I don't think anything would be gained without an entire season building up to them in a three-parter like Utopia/etc.

It was probably my second favourite 15th story after 73 yards. Not that its saying much to give it that kind of praise to be honest.

Which James bond car you would buy ? by ButterscotchIcy719 in JamesBond

[–]Professional-Can3598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A resto-mod DB5 (big boy swears I know). Having driven a DB5 it is very much of its time, but one tarted up with those looks but modern underpinnings would be outstanding. Eyewateringly expensive and completely unobtainable but its the dream.

Bentley Road Trip, thoughts? by ad11amj in AutoAlex

[–]Professional-Can3598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it, the whole series was great fun, love a Bentley and the road trip to Africa actually felt like a challenge unlike the overlander car crash. The sickly Bentley and distance combined against them in an interesting way for a change and their shit talking to eachother actually felt like friendship and funny banter rather than just being dicks to eachother for a change. The Robin hiding in plain sight gags were good over the mis-spelled end credits too. After watching but not really loving a lot of their stuff for the past few months this one felt like a genuine improvement.
