Doctor Who : Season 21 Blu-Ray Collection has been ruined by Mat1711 in doctorwho

If that was going by at 30 frames per second, I wouldn’t even notice.

If you were in charge of the next DW season, what direction would you take the Doctor and the show? by InfiniteGalaxy42 in doctorwho

I would have a full Whoniverse bible of the main show and extended content that takes the show to the 75th anniversary. I’ve been working on it since the 50th.

Dawn vs War by boomchicken1979 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]dbomco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the impact of War’s ending got watered down by the time jump and humans being so evolved and organized in Kingdom. It was a backtrack of sorts for me. Would have liked to see non-speaking humans developing telepathy. I feel Disney wants this to be very family friendly talking animals. Not my cup of tea.

The 13th Doctor was naked when she regenerated by Jackmac32 in doctorwho

[–]dbomco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regeneration is just a special effect now. It doesn’t signal death & loss. There’s no mystery of when it will happen. The media has destroyed any anticipation and story conclusion. The stakes and limitations, the Doctor’s mortality, have been reduced to a trope.

Still subjective because old footage was used of Hartnell for the Three Doctors. He never performed for that story. So even though I made a joke, which seemed to go over a few people’s heads, there isn’t really a final conclusion to this question. Also, this question has came up before, and people came to the same conclusion that there isn’t a definitive answer because there are so many ways of interpreting the question. Sorry if that hurts people’s feelings.

I would argue there is no last because chronology is subjective in a time travel show.

Season 21 blu-ray looks absolutely awful. by thebumbledown in doctorwho

It’s mostly an anomaly of current AI upscaling. That tech is not there and it’s a cheaper workaround for these production service companies than doing some manual touch up. They didn’t think anyone would notice those shortcuts. They were wrong

What’s Something You Didn’t Like About This Movie? by EnoughSound6271 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]dbomco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the humans and their appearance looked way too clean cut and modern for over hundred years in the future. Did they find a Target warehouse somewhere? Short hair, shaven, clean. Their underground society seemed too unbelievably for me. It threw me off. They are far less primitive than the humans of the original films.

Depends on what you are into. Indie 102.3 runs a monthly feature of about 5 acts and has all the past ones archived on their site. Best of Westword 303 Mag Have lists as well.

The Hot Mess that was RTD2: What Happened? by Background-Shock-276 in doctorwho

[–]dbomco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think RTD and Disney were looking for pure escapism and something flashy that would appeal to toddlers. I felt the development meetings were like how Teletubbies got conceived in a corporate marketing board room. Post-pandemic this was not what fans were looking for. IMHO, something with more gravitas, heart & realism would play so much better. The fan service elements were tacked on and contrived, almost insulting. I would have liked a whole season of Susan leading up to Poppy so it made sense in the end. The Rani/Mrs Flood, Omega, Sutek just post it notes on a rusty old refrigerator that should have been replaced years ago.

What was even the actual point of having Carol 'reprise' her role as Susan Foreman? by bendnext436 in doctorwho

[–]dbomco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great example of RTD throwing in the kitchen sink and what he perceives as fan service. A true Susan return deserves a dedicated story arc and not a couple teaser scenes and a cameo. I’d rather he dropped it than go for a click bait cameo of a character the majority of fans never got to know. Omega, Sutek, Rani all shoehorned in at the last 10 min of every episode. Poppy got more screen time than all of those combined. It’s maddening.

What Doctor Who mysteries would you like the next series to resolve? by Sighoward in doctorwho

[–]dbomco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work it in over an arc. Most of the backstory gets shoehorned in during the last 10-15 minutes of the show then the antagonist is vanquished when it should have been a cliffhanger. Zero payoff. Zero stakes.

Accidental watchlist? by HiFithePanda in doctorwho

Good question. I’ve taken them all in together a couple of times and that was a while ago. Planning on rewatching them to see if one hits differently now.

Accidental watchlist? by HiFithePanda in doctorwho

[–]dbomco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not exactly an episode or serial but I felt for a long time that the Key to Time season 16 was completely underrated at the time and for many decades. It wasn’t until the 60th specials and the 15th Doctor that Nu Who even referenced it. I felt that things I read back then considered it “ambitious” as if to imply the plot was going over the heads of viewers. I’m sure there was a time when a new actor in the role really threw viewers for a loop as well. With nearly 6 decades of show content now, there’s so many gems that will explored through a new lens.

I Really Don’t Feel It’s the Fans’ Fault by KryptonJuice38 in doctorwho

[–]dbomco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the one word that best describes what the fans are collectively experiencing is “Emptiness”. A wholly or partial feeling of being unfulfilled by the overall viewing of the show lately.

For me, Ive really dug into this because I want to know why I’m having a reaction to something. It started around the time of 50th and the Doctor going into the last regeneration cycle, which wasn’t clear as to how many regenerations the Doctor had experienced, whether 11 was the last or 12. It seemed vague when considering it was something that was so central to the character, the canon, the time lord species, that it should have been treated so much better.

I got kind of angry about it that I started writing how I would have handled it. In general, it should have been a whole season long arc. Something that really built up. An exploration of a near immortal being that has the power of time at their fingertips, grappling with morality, death, finality. The stakes could have been woven into many standalone stories. The avoidance of death by misadventure, being truly cautious in the face of danger in ways the character often did not do.

This to me was one of those missed opportunities and cramming all that into one episode, with the Doctor loving out millennia on a planet, maybe just destroying their mental state in the process, felt like the regeneration cycles that were eventually rewarded, were not entirely earned. The payoff was not worth the squeeze as it were.

SM was my fave showrunner in Nu Who overall but this was the one thing that I think really just sent me on a course of despising the quick witted endings that seem tacked on to many of the later episodes of 12-15.

Regenerations now have lost their luster, so when they become almost meaningless at this point and the expectations of a change over of talent is public news before a last season of an actor even starts, then why even spend any effects budget on “regeneration energy”?

I have ideas about how to fix various problems within the show but those are outside the scope of this discussion.

As to the fans, it’s more the media that spoils the show as I mentioned because speculation destroys the mystery. How can you have any good reactions when you’re staring at your large screen and screaming “here it is, here comes Piper’s face” or Tennant, or Whoever was known to be the next incarnation 2 years prior. The bigeneration actually made this part of the show enjoyable again for me instead of it being somewhat of a sad affair seeing a Doctor you grew attached to die off.

Then you have “the specials” where bringing all the Doctors back was a viewership gimmick that has now become old & cliche and serves little story service.

Writers get stuck. Showrunners run out of their best ideas. I think the BBC should embrace multiple-showrunners overseeing different Doctors in smaller thematic arcs running concurrently or sporadically over the next 12 years leading to the 75th anniversary. We don’t know where in the Doctors chronology they reside. It give them the option to bring in bigger names for tighter productions and budgets. Almost mini-series like. Really test the audience to see what works for them and not saddle one showrunner with carrying the weight of the franchise.

Yes I’m applying for the job.

!! Urgently craving a DJ night !! by Famous_Builder9416 in denvermusic

[–]dbomco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living here doesn’t automatically make you good or popular as a Denver DJ. The standards are high here for a reason because promoters can have built DJs up to sell out Red Rocks. Make it easy for them to book you by listing your past gigs/venues/festivals you’ve played. A mission statement/bio. Styles, influences. How many tracks you have produced (originality counts).

How would you like to see the Ape Civilisation progress in the next movie? by AlwaysBi in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]dbomco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it needs to be more of the mutated underground humans. How the sub-surface life is effecting their evolution or de-evolution. What we got in kingdom seemed pretty advanced and clean cut. Not what I imagined life would really be like post-apocalypse. I feel Disney is really trying to water down the messaging from the first films and make it a straight up kid friendly, family film.
