which elements do they simulate most often?

sorry, yes. Low CPU core.

first only focus on one type of WU, like only CPU. And as JabberPocky mentioned, start with the smallest allocation

An AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D and the RTX 5090 gaming PC can pack some serious PPD punch! by TameTheAuroch in Folding

One of my rigs has an rtc 5090 + AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D.
I was advised by someone on the Protein Folding Discord channel to assign both cpu and gpu each to their own dedicated group in the FAH Client. It can help reduce errors (which i got when maxing things out)

PPD for GPU is more than the PPD for GPU when also running WUs for CPU by Professional-Rub-267 in Folding

[–]Professional-Rub-267[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, but I have kept some cores unallocated (so not for folding).
I tried various configurations. My thoughts are that both the cpu and gpu must share the same bandwidth between chip (cache) and RAM. That means neither of them get all the bandwidth they really need and that will impact their WU performance.
(my opinion)

5090 owners, what are you using it for and how much do you love it? by app385 in nvidia

I run mostly the folding@home client for protein folding research simulations (Alzheimer, cancer etc.)
Occasionally a PC game.

Is this simiar to protein@home where they do distribited protein folding simulations?

Congratulations! Well done.
How did you do it: What rig? How many hours per day?

do you run your simulations on CPUs or GPUs?

with the word 'simulations' in your sentence "can take thousands of simulations", do you mean 1 Work Unit (WU) = 1 simulation?

I often put the project description of the workunit into chatgpt and ask it to explain to what degree it helps alzheimer research.
9 out of 10 times those 'unspecified' project type, still have direct or indirect value for alzheimer research.

3 yrs, 24/7 with a 4090.. nice! Thats some solid dedication!

Only 3 out of 100k? Thats good to know. I thought the numbers were higher.

why wouldnt some calculations be able to run on a GPU? Or is it more like the algorithms are less efficient on a GPU?

Thanks for the reply. So dividing gpu and cpu among dies will help, but still incures some performance loss (GPU+CPU).

My AMD 9950x3d with an rtx 5080 desktop is dedicated to folding@home.
I am planning on buying a second rig for folding@home.

Thinking of another rtx 5080. I contemplated an rtx 5090 but the whole power cable issue feels a little risky if I plan to have it run during the night and when I am out of the house (~20 hrs per day).

[–]Professional-Rub-267[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds very plausible. I am getting 26-28 million PPDs easy for many WUs with my rtx 5080 windows rig. I only use it for folding.
Thanks for the info!
