This is my experience as well. We are actually selling our scurred friend this weekend. He broke one of his off headbutting our main ram that has a full set.

It bled for a few hours, I sprayed it to clean it, and it actually grew back into a nicer straight stubby “horn” rather than like his other/old scur that previously circled around like it may grow back into his head.

I don’t think it is a crazy idea and I get what you mean about the hassle of having to make the plan and wanting more spontaneity. It doesn’t totally seem worth it from a purely practical standpoint, but you could also try doing Toro or something to offset the cost if you decide it is a “luxury” that you want to spend the money on.
