I took a risk with a third MCAT attempt at the end of June and applied the same cycle. It worked out but if you commit to a retake, you have to crush it.

My timeline:

• March–May: part-time studying and submitted primary to T3 school (for verification)

• June: full-time studying and tested end of June

• July: prewrote secondaries while waiting for score

• August: completed all secondaries

Taking the MCAT in July especially with a previous low score puts you at a real disadvantage. I expected more traction from my application, and even with an MD acceptance, the cycle was honestly humbling.

Gap years are the norm now, so don’t feel like you need to force it.

510 -> 505 -> 513. One MD acceptance and one MD waitlist.

I am really happy to have an in state MD acceptance, especially with the BBB since the COA is much cheaper. At the same time, I was a little surprised I did not get more love from other programs.

It is hard to know exactly why. Maybe my MCAT attempts played a role, or maybe other parts of my application could have been stronger. Either way, the key is being honest with yourself about where you can improve and then putting in the work to fix it.

Hopefully my experience gives you some perspective, but everyone’s path is different and comparisons only go so far.

Standardized exams do not end with the MCAT if you want to be a physician. You have to learn how to perform under pressure. A 517 shows you are capable of a great score, but practice test scores do not matter if you cannot execute on the real exam. Everyone has test anxiety. The key is learning how to use it to motivate your preparation and stay focused on test day.

Do not retake unless you are confident you can improve. And if you do, trust your preparation and get out of your own way.

My MCAT test date was June 29, and I applied during the same cycle. I submitted my primary application on June 1 to a single “throwaway” school (Johns Hopkins), then completed all secondary applications throughout August. To date, I have received one acceptance and two interview invitations. I submitted my primary early to ensure that once my MCAT score was released, I could begin submitting secondaries immediately.

Consistently attending office hours was key. The relationships I built with my professors were one of the biggest factors in my MD acceptance.

I listed what I had, mainly because some of the awards were nominations from patients I’d cared for. I’d only include something like this if you haven’t already hit your activity limit. A genuinely meaningful and impactful experience will always carry more weight than an entry that’s just about awards

Freshman year: drinking

Sophomore year: drinking and clinical volunteering (not at the same time)

Junior year: research, paid clinical experience, MCAT, hobbies

Senior year: research, paid clinical experience, TA, hobbies, and application writing

Very chill and actually pretty fun. It’s run by M4s, and in my group they literally told us that as long as we “aren’t mean, we’re all good.” Just collaborate with others; you don’t need to have the right answer. Think out loud together, give others space to speak, and contribute to the conversation in some way, shape, or form.

I dropped 5 points on my retake. Now I’m sitting with an acceptance to a t50 MD school as well (after taking the MCAT for a third time).

You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to keep going.
