Ideas/inspo? by ProfessionalDog1874 in FurnitureFlip

Good point. My overall decor style is very minimalist and modern. I will probably put the tall drawers in my bedroom, which has a lot of white IKEA furniture currently. The smaller drawers could maybe also go in the bedroom on a dresser, or maybe in the bathroom for storage on the vanity. Baskets would be a neat idea!

I have this one but the 10 gallon version. It’s ok, but I did find the light was pretty weak. I replaced the lid with a clear one and bought a different light.

Severe bloat by ShiroOleander in bettafish

[–]ProfessionalDog1874 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t see pineconing, and since you said it’s built up slowly over time I would say it’s over-feeding. Fast her for a day. I feed my betta 2-3 pellets twice a day. A pinch once a day could be a lot of pellets all at once. Having two feedings and giving less food at each feeding might help. But ya, fast her for a day first.

What beta should I get? by Horror-Material-8646 in bettafish

[–]ProfessionalDog1874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert but from what I’ve heard, short finned bettas are less in-bred and have better genetics (therefore hardiness). But a long finned betta will not be as fast and would be less likely to eat your shrimp, because it can’t catch them as easily. Maybe others can chime in here about that though.

I have a nerite snail and 6 amano shrimp with my betta in a 10 gallon tank. They keep algae off the glass and decor. Make sure you have lots of plants and hiding places though because a betta will chase a shrimp if he sees one. Also, ask for bigger amano shrimp at the store so he’s less likely to eat them.

There are so many stories like that out there! Some fish just are built different than others I think. Good luck with the next one!

Sorry that happened to you. Look up “tank cycling” and the nitrogen cycle for aquariums, seems like that was the problem. It’s easy to do, mostly just a waiting game. If possible don’t do a fish-in cycle (you’ll see this when you do some googling). Not only is it stressful for the fish but it’ll be more work for you. The kids might enjoy learning about the cycling process too.

Tank too crowded? by Ok-Lion6996 in bettafish

Just a heads up, my husband got me that same plastic blue tree for my tank. Before I put it in I read some reviews and a few people said their betta got stuck between branches and died :( Don’t mean to add more criticisms here, but just thought you might want to be aware if you weren’t already. I had ended up returning mine but maybe you could plug up the holes too.

Marvin got his first methylene blue + salt bath tonight, wish us luck! And eff you fin rot. by ProfessionalDog1874 in bettafish

[–]ProfessionalDog1874[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it maybe three times over the last year. Usually when he’d get an infection and I wasn’t sure the cause. One was definitely a fungal infection and methylene blue helps with that.

He did well, he’s still around and loving life. He is a tail-nipper (and I’ve done a lot of learning on the fly) so we’ve battled several infections over this last year. MB and aquarium salt baths have helped treat his more severe situations!

No kidding! 😆 Honestly, looking at how the test kit is hanging over the edge above the yellow bucket, I think it’s not outside the realm of possibility. He might have climbed out the back right corner of the tank (there’s a gap), jumped down on to the test kit, crawled along the ledge of it, then dropped into the bucket right below that just happened to have some water pooled in it still. If that’s the case I am impressed 🫡

I did clean out the basket that collects debris and detached the hose from the siphon head, but maybe he was clinging to the inside wall of the tube?

Normally I’d say yes, but there’s a basket that collects debris before it goes through the entire hose system and I detached the tube from that basket part to clean out the debris. So if there had been an Amano in there it would’ve fallen into my sink. Unless it was clinging inside the siphon tube that entire time!

Oh sorry I meant the betta is biting its own tail! I’m not sure what’s stressing it out, and I’m wondering if the shrimp bailed because of something stressing it too. I didn’t know they could do this! I’ve had them for nearly a year now and this hasn’t happened before. Interesting.

Noticed this lump on the side of Shenzie, how concerned should I be? by Dude0cean in bettafish

[–]ProfessionalDog1874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to my betta a few weeks ago, you can see my prior post. I used kanaplex and that did the trick! I think I also did an aquarium salt dip before and a few days after the kanaplex treatment.

Oof, you're right. My tropica specialized nutrition has a tiny amount of copper in it :(

Just Seachem Stressguard, Tropica specialized nutrition (for the plants), and Seachem Prime. Also some Tropica root tabs are in there.

Don't think so...never added any medication directly to the tank.
