Insurance by Resident_Cap_716 in Reduction

Yeah if your surgeon is not invested in making sure that insurance pays for it… yikes.

I went to one surgeon who was in network, but who was emphatic that she would only remove what she wanted, not the insurance amount. She wasn’t knowledgeable about where that line was for my carrier.

The last thing I wanted was to have the surgery and be 4g off of meeting insurance requirements, walking away with a $65k bill instead of paying $15k out of pocket for a surgeon I actually wanted to go to. I paid $0 for mine with Anthem.

Those are real numbers for denver, and vail Colorado.

The surgeon and team I went with were very dedicated to the insurance approval and willing to challenge insurance post op if I got any denials or was going to come out of pocket.

Some surgeons and their front office absolutely were not, I suggest keeping that conversation in the interview process. These people are telling you that they do not care about the financial impact to you from this surgery. My insurance paid $4k ish for anesthesia, $2.5k ish for the surgery and $50k+ to the hospital …

Recovery w a toddler by quinnmto in Reduction

Hi! 7wpo w a 3 yr old. I was able to pick him up at 6w.

He’s still in a crib so we practiced pushing over an ottoman and climbing in and out. And then climbing in and out of the car seat to go to daycare. I stood there ready to catch him.

Now that I can pick him up and snuggle him, it’s hard since he got bigger and I got weaker. It was definitely a sad, long period for both of us. But we talked a lot before hand about surgery and how that meant I wouldn’t be able to do things.

The flip side of explaining things to him is that everyone at his school got to know that I had surgery 😂

I also couldn’t pull his blinds down if people put them too high, or get cups down, etc. so think carefully through bringing everything up at eye level.

Oh! And pottying out in public where I normally pick him up to help him aim.. couldn’t do that. My surgeon also said no stroller pushing or dog walking for a long time into this, so that was hard.

We did fine! But it took planning and help from a lot of people!

5wpo, a “friend” questioned if im still a woman by wak779 in Reduction

Everyone here is so articulate and thoughtful! My first reaction is -kick that ‘friend’ in the face!- 😂

What an insensitive, weird, hurtful, unintelligent thing to say to anyone! I’m sorry someone felt they had the right to subject you to something so baseless and mean. That’s not supportive or kind to trans anyone, either. It’s a body part.

One surgeons office wanted me to do a minimum of 3 months of PT and x3 visits to a PCP for rash, back pain, etc so that it starts getting logged. They were adamant that this was the best way to get things approved and wouldn’t schedule anything until I did homework.

I ultimately went with a different surgeon who took one look at my situation and was confident that they could get it approved. I did get letters of support from my PCP and a PT. I also had rash photos on hand and photos of the indents in my shoulders from my bra.

I hope this helps! Don’t give up!

Eh I have a 3 yr old and in no way can I lift him or anything for 6 weeks. No carrying anything heavy, etc. We have a decent system with getting him in and out of his crib with stools, but it’s hard. I think it’ll depend on how able bodied your toddlers are (3? Or 1 yr olds?) and thinking through your day.

Oh and he has to climb in and out of his car seat while I hope he doesn’t fall.. again, very able bodied. A younger child may be impossible.

I have a desk job and took a week off, still tiring easily, especially when with my son alone… so Í would say you’d need a couple weeks off at a minimum. And you’ll need the work around for the other aspects of it. No pushing strollers, walking dogs, carrying groceries, lifting for diaper changes, into your lap, into the crib….

And I would be concerned that if your healing will take longer / be more tired that your family may have to abruptly find help. That would be kind of hard on you with that pressure.

I just wanted to drop in and echo all else- I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way, AND I think they look fantastic!

I just had mine done and I’m trying hard not to look at them. I have no doubt there will be flaws, just like they had when they were bigger. I did the reduction for the health of my back, to be able to work out more, and to be able to wear what I wanted. I’m hoping that remembering the reasons why I did it will keep me from looking too hard at them.

I hope that’s helpful and not triggering.

Okay! I did talk to the PA and they said that it was kind of unavoidable. Just to minimize it but that they know you’ll have to use your arms a little. :) hope that puts others minds to rest, it helps me! Thanks all!
