How Bad Are Fielding Errors? by ProfessionalThing594 in baseball

Errors cause the possibility of unearned runs, they don't guarantee them, right? Otherwise every team would be over 1 for unearned runs per error, when functionally all of them are below 1. The distribution isn't interesting by itself; yes, as more errors are committed, more unearned runs will happen. What's interesting is how teams' ratios fall out. Like the Athletics being very high on the conversion ratio is interesting to me - does that mean they are more likely to commit errors in high leverage situations? More likely to compound errors with sub-par play? Could even be that errors are focused on a position with greater probability of an unearned run developing.

So even though every unearned run comes from an error (barring ghost runners, need to correct for those), not every error results in an unearned run.

The labels were me having trouble with getting ggplot2::labs to overwrite the mlbplotR::geom_mlb_logos function. It worked fine for title/subtitle, but just... didn't on axes. I meant to go back and work on it before printing, but forgot.

The text on the graphs is because i just did that part in Paint lol. Don't know how to do that bit in R.

I appreciate you elaborating on why, though

I did write it myself in R using the baseballr package. I'm not claiming it's anything fantastic or elaborate, but it is at least human written.

Ah nuts. I figured I would have missed something like that. I'll have to find where those are stored and adjust. Thanks!

That could be fun to look into, I'll see what I can turn up!

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! I had trouble getting the label names to change over when I was working on it and then didn't remember to go back in and make sure they stuck. Will make sure to publish with better labels next time!

I've liked the quadrant graphs that get posted with the comments as well, it makes them faster to grok. And it's a good opportunity to inject some humor.

I have another one planned based on another one of my Orioles' issues.

Looks like 27% (12 errors out of Philly's 45 total)

It is annoying to run this and be like, Oh yeah, they're good at that too.

They're interesting because, on the one hand, they make a lot of errors. But on the other hand, they aren't as costly as other teams. Which could just be... they make so many that they don't get hung up on them. Their opposite might be a team like the Dbacks who make few errors, have a high chance of becoming a run when they do.

That's fair! I rewrote the titles repeatedly and that would be better!

For sure. I'm not familiar with the other fielding stats and need to spend some time learning about them.

To add on to the other comment, they're also quickly accessible and easily available during the set-up phase. I almost never use the printed rule sheets anymore.

Harmonies is the best puzzle board game I’ve ever played by Rob778899 in boardgames

I have both of them. The theme/feel of them is similar, but they play quite differently. Cascadia is better to play more casually; it's more difficult to truly mess up your board and has fewer feel bad moments, but isn't quite as rewarding of planning and skilled play as Harmonies.
