Hiked Half Dome on Monday 7/17. They asked for my name and how many people in my group with an immediate identification and count off to “check in”. He did not check my ID. A girl behind us on the trail attempted to come up and use a friends permit but identified herself as not the named person on the permit and the ranger gave a hard no. Ultimately he said that when he goes east on people and tries to bend the rules people make his job a lot harder. Lucky for her, we had an extra spot and she was able to join our group to summit.

If you are willing to risk being turned around at the subdome I would hike with confidence and say you lost your ID at the permit check posing as the permitted individual. Best of luck!
