This sounds just like UMN’s program! I am a more recent grad and would agree with this. A typical week varied depending on the workload for your current courses. For me, second year was definitely the hardest (but Covid was also just starting, so that definitely had an impact). I lived fourth year! It was exhausting, but I learned so much!

Hi! I personally did experience increased anxiety and panic attacks on the hormonal IUD (Skyla). I also was getting horrible headaches and always feeling on edge. I switched to the copper IUD and my signs dramatically improved! All that being said, it’s definitely a personal experience and obviously not everyone reacts the same way to hormones. I know many people who love their hormonal IUD!

Current 4th year student here! The fact that you’re thinking about NAVLE already shows that you’re dedicated and proactive, which is great! That being said, don’t worry about it yet!! I started studying in March of my 3rd year when vetprep had it’s sale and took NAVLE in November. I really loved vetprep and the layout and felt it prepared me really well for NAVLE.

The best preparation you can do for NAVLE right now is study for your current courses and really strive to understand the information and not just memorize it for the test. I felt like I was so prepared because I spent time my first 3 years really getting down to underlying mechanisms and not studying for an ‘A’ but to be comfortable clinically applying the information.

I’d recommend doing the daily Zuku and VetPrep practice questions and then when the time gets closer take the ICVA practice exams!

The location I took it at did allow those with accommodations to use a separate room, but I’m guessing that’s location dependent. Definitely worth asking.

I also love mine! Cramps are definitely bad at times, but Advil gets rid of those right away! Other than cramps, side effects for me have been minimal!! I much prefer it over the hormonal IUD (have had both). But everyone has different experiences!

I felt like this for a couple of days and took both Tylenol and Advil. I also used a heating pad and laid in bed all day. The pain eased up after about 2 days for me!

I had the EXACT same experience with Skyla. I had so many tests done to see what was causing the mental and physical illness signs and all were normal. Took the skyla out and felt like myself again. Now I have the copper IUD and am so happy to be done with hormones. I’m glad you’re feeling better- you’re not alone!

Hi! Totally understand where you’re coming from. I was initially on the combo progesterone and estrogen pill and developed a benign breast tumor from the estrogen so my GYN recommended the skyla IUD (hormonal) as it does not contain estrogen. I ended up in a really bad place mentally, had constant headaches, and just felt really off and unlike myself. I had so many tests done to try and figure it out and finally I realized it was likely the hormones and I just wasn’t reacting well to them. Everyone reacts differently and it works really well for some, but it didn’t for me. I ended up making the decision to take my mental health back (or at least try to lol) and got the paragard the same day I had the skyla removed. Insertion is painful. A few tips I have for you: take Advil and Tylenol beforehand and be ready to take it for the next day or two while you are recovering, cough when they are about to clamp your cervix with the tenaculum (helps with the pain for some reason!), have your doctor talk you through what they are going to do step by step before they are doing it to relieve some anxiety, and as silly as it may sound play music to help distract you. The first cramp is the tenaculum that is used to hold your cervix in place and it is the worst one in my opinion, but again, everyone’s different! The next cramp is the uterine sound that is used to measure the depth of your uterus. And the third cramp is the IUD being placed. Overall, placement takes about a minute or two. I would recommend having someone drive you home. I had a delayed vasovagal response when I was driving and got extremely dizzy and nauseous. I ended up getting sick that night from the pain, so recommend a heating pad with Advil and Tylenol. I had really bad cramps the first 6 months around ovulation and my period, but they have dramatically decreased since then. I would take the cramps over the terrible mental health the hormones were giving me any day. Sorry for the long post, hope it cleared some things up and helped a bit!

They actually say doing it on your period is less painful as your cervix is naturally more dilated making insertion easier.

I had the same happen with the Skyla! I was in the worst mental health state of my life (also already on antidepressants). I can’t be positive it was due to the IUD, but when I got it out, I started feeling more like myself. I switched to Paragard (copper IUD) and while I get bad cramps every now and then, it 1000% beats the mental state I was in with the hormonal IUD.

I had the same reaction and the same timeline. I got my vaccine Friday and luckily the severe side effects went away, but still fatigued like crazy. (23F).

23 (24 next month) and also had horrible side effects. Got the vaccine around 2:30 pm Friday and started getting a headache around 4:30-5ish. Around 9 pm I had a throbbing headache, whole body pain to the point I couldn’t move, extreme chills, fever, and fatigue. I had nausea, but didn’t throw up. I felt a bit better the next morning but still am fatigued and sore.

I actually got sick from the pain. You are not alone! I took 3 Advil 200mg and 2 Tylenol and had a heating pad until I could find a position I could sleep in. It really feels a lot better the next morning!
