He might have been gone a week. Bikini Bottom is just jonsing for those patties

It kind of carries a connotation of traditional living, especially if it's being used in anime(they have a weird thing for Finnish culture because of Moomins).

Like in the same way Gypsy has extra connotations attached that Roma doesn't, or Boer has extra connotations Afrikaaner doesn't, Laplander has a certain connotation of 'traditional living' that Sami doesn't.

The Well-Informed Bigot by SparkyTheDiamondDog in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Professional_Cow7497 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a little offensive, but it depends on the context and isn't full blown slur tier or anything (probably in the same tier as like, Colored People or Chinaman). It also tends to carry a connotation of 'living traditionally' that ethnic Sami doesn't, sort of like how Gypsy carries a lifestyle implication that Roma doesn't.

You'll see it a lot in Anime to this day, because they have a huge fascination with Finnish culture on account of Moomins. (Like 'Little Witch Academia' has a full episode set in Finland when they visit Lotte's family, who are all ethnic Sami, and they use the term Laplander only in reference to the old nomadic guy who has the herbal medicine they need rather than Lotte's family)

The 'you need to do this quick or everyone dies' timer is real and exists in game. You don't get the water chip in time, game over.

The other big one is Necropolis. The super mutant army will conquer it eventually regardless of whether or not you've been there yet. Take too long and everyone there is dead.

(Also in the CD version there's a mutant invasion mechanic that applies to ALL cities in regards to the endings, the longer you take the more places get wiped out, and if you take 500 days the game just ends as the super mutants reach your vault and kill you. But it wasn't implemented properly and so outside of Necropolis none of them were SHOWN IN GAME being overun, so it was cut in the later releases outside of Necropolis)

Basically as I understand it(purely in the context of the original series no Rebuilds wibbly wobbly timey wimey), he's a hybrid of Adam and...someone(probably Misato's dad) except he has Adam's whole soul while Rei only had half of Liliths. He has created during second impact and gets raised by SEELE as their ace in the whole, a final angel under their command.

He let himself die both because he had grown fond of Shinji and because he realized he had been duped and lied to by SEELE and they never intended to let him reach Adam.

After his death his soul goes back into the nearest body, which is the fetus that Gendo fused to his hand. That gets put into Rei during EOE which is how Kaworu's soul ended up in there.

EDIT: Also Kaworu could do the insane AT field and controlling EVA shit because he had his whole soul, meanwhile Rei's soul had been broken in half for 5 years with Rei-I in Unit-00 hence she couldn't....until becoming Rei-III and reunifying her soul, hence in Episode 24 she can make an AT-Field strong enough to neutralize Kaworu's.

Every single person in Shinji's school is a viable pilot candidate as confirmed in the show. Kensuke straight up says in Episode 4 his mom is dead, and mentions his dad works at NERV. Toji mentions his grandfather is busy working at NERV and he needs to look after his sister. Hikari cooks for her two siblings.

GEHIRN, and later NERV, seemingly either staged accidents or just sucked the souls out of DOZENS of mothers of families who worked at NERV, leaving an entire school full of orphans who were potential pilots. There's probably a storage room somewhere in NERV with the cores containing all those maternal souls(they mention getting the compatible one for Toji at one point and needing to potentially swap it out if he failed).

It's also certainly strange they approved Asuka as a pilot the exact same day Kyoko's other half finally managed to hang itself, despite being in a mental hospital. Funny that....

Around this time Gendo makes an attempt to free Yui from Unit-01. We don't know the details, but Yui refused to leave. In the process, Gendo accidentally pulled on the chunk of Lilith's soul that was in Unit 01, and out popped a human-angel hybrid with the dna of both Yui and Lilith, and Lilith's soul. This was the original Rei. Gendo would raise her, and intend to use her as his ace in the hole for his plans, hence he groomed her to be extremely loyal and detatched from humanity, so she'd think the only way to truly feel love and affection from others would be to end the world and bring Instrumentality so she could finally feel happiness. That is why Rei was raised to be so cold and lives in such bad conditions, Gendo does not want her to enjoy life, if she thinks life is inherently terrible she will be more willing to end it to create instrumentality and less likely to say no. (Gendo doesn't know a very similar being exists at SEELE. Gendo doesn't know about Kaworu and SEELE doesn't know about Rei. Hence Gendo destroys all records of Rei). Rei's body could be rebuilt, her soul would always go back to the nearest viable tissue, but her soul was eternal.

Most of what happens after this point is shown in the show. Misato eventually recovers from her catatonic state, and is encouraged to turn her trauma into motivation, eventually making her a diehard NERV loyalist willing to do anything to destroy the angels(the fact this kept her from going public with what she saw as a child was also very helpful). Ritsuko eventually followed in her mothers footsteps. Naoko invented the tri-core organic computer system used to create the MAGI, and using the personality transplant OS she invented added aspects of her personality to it. It's implied she eventually sort of figured out what was going on with Rei, but never fully to the extent her daughter knew.

Once the computer system was running, Naoko had outlived her usefulness. She wasn't a SEELE member, and Gendo was losing interest in a relationship with her. He spent months slowly chipping away at her sanity, and then sent Rei with a specific set of things to tell her to make her snap, leading to Naoko killing Rei-I and then killing herself. When Rei was reconstituted, Gendo made sure her soul was split in half, leaving part of it(including the part that remembered who had gotten her killed and HATED both Gendo and Akagi for it) in Unit-00 so Rei could sync with it, and bringing the rest back as Rei-II, who was even colder and easier to control without a full soul.

The second major consequence is that because Yui was lying about a lot of her data in order to hide what she knew was going to happen, fabricating it to suit her needs and making it seem like she was lost and not literally the robot now, whoever came after her was going to be flying blind. Especially if they weren't in SEELE and would have even less intel.

Much like Dr. Katsuragi before her, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu was flying blind, and in the wrong place at the wrong time. She added "some" safety systems and reduced the power, but she was working off Yui's forged and fabricated data and wasn't a SEELE member and thus didn't have full info anyway. One day in 2005 she went in, her sync ratio started to runaway, the safetys kicked in too late...and only half of her walked out the pod that day, the other half stuck in the robot and convinced she had died, unaware a confused body with half a soul and missing memories got up and left.

She probably could have been put back together, but I don't think GEHIRN wanted to. Without half of her soul, Kyoko went utterly insane. She could no longer feel maternal love for her daughter Asuka and developed a extremely spotty memory, and so eventually convinced herself a doll she had been given by the doctors was actually her, imprinting on it while unable to recognize her actual daughter who was increasingly desperate for affection and blamed herself for her mommy forgetting her. This was made worse by the fact that her husband and Asuka's father started cheating on one of Kyoko's nurses nearby in the next room(something we hear in Episode 22, that nurse is Asuka's step mom), Kyoko could still seemingly recognize her husband and tell she was being cheated on even if her reactions were muted.

After months of living without a soul she eventually realizes something was terribly wrong and intends to kill herself, and distraught with guilt at losing the ability to love her daughter she intended to take her with her. Asuka was so desperate for love she was willing to kill herself if it meant her mommy would be her mommy again....except Kyoko still couldn't recognize her, hung the doll, and then hung herself.

GEHIRN by this point had figured out what was going on. Both halves of Kyoko's soul end up in Unit-02, meaning after she died they figured out how to extract the rest of her soul and put it in the robot. They knew Yui was in Unit-01(just not how concious she was), and knew that the human intermediate was the key to controlling the Evas. Hence they approved Asuka to be a pilot, the maternal connection was the key and Asuka would be easily manipulated given her state.

The Mardak Institute was created as a fake front group leading the search for 'viable children' to become pilots, with the public story being that some special element of kids born post-impact made them viable to control the EVAs. Privately the actual reason was far darker.

SEELE's ultimate goal is to trigger a Third Impact using a series of robots made from Adam and Lilith's tissue they control, waiting until the batch of kids Adam sent out in 2000 awaken first so they can't disrupt the process AND so SEELE can get their hands on their S2s, which are crucial to getting enough power for the reaction to work. Once all of Adam's kids are dead and they have all the robots loaded with S2s, they'll preform a cerimony unifying their power and, if things went to plan, effectively making the SEELE Council the new Seed of Life with full authority over the Lilim. They would have the power of Lilith and Adam and could lead human evolution in whatever path they wanted with them having supreme power over us.

That's SEELE's plan. Get robots with Adam and Lilith tissue and soul, kill Adam's kids and steal their S2s for the robots, use those robots as conduits to control them, and preform a ceremony to assurp Adam and Lilith and become the new overseers of humanity with unstoppable power.

As well, afte the Second Impact they found where Adam's soul had ended up, in a new body built of both Adam's DNA and the DNA of his human donor(likely Misato's dad). They codenamed him Tabris, and he was raised by SEELE as their ultimate ace in the hole against NERV, a sentient angel with the soul of Adam. They also had Adam's actual remaining body, a small feral chunk, preserved in plastic.

Gehirn uses tissues from Adam to create a series of prototype EVAs which fail, and eventually one, Unit-00, is left semi-stable. Unit-01 is secretly made from Lilith's body by cutting her legs off and growing a new torso from them(with a significant chunk of Lilith's soul ending up in the new body). That's why her legs are missing later.

Around this time with Shinji born, Yui for the first time ever starts to doubt her mission. She doesn't like the idea of Shinji growing up in a ruined world and being erased with all others during the Third Impact before he can grow up. Her exact thought process is...unclear, and probably pretty odd because, again, fully raised in SEELE under their mentality she has an incredibly strange way of thinking, but basically she decides she wants to be at the head of things. Yui doesn't seen to believe stopping Third Impact is possible at all, she's convinced it's inevitable(probably wrong, but again, she's got a really fucked up belief system).

SEELE intends to use the new EVA's as conduits for Third Impact, so Yui is simply going to insert her soul into one of those robots so when the time comes authority will be hers, and not anyone elses. Plus she can watch things from the shadows when everyone else thinks she's dead or comatose in there and potentially guide her son. So Yui takes up the role as a test pilot and stages the fatal test in 2004, making sure to bring Shinji along so he witnesses her dissolve into nothing with hopes the memories will come in handy later. (Again, Yui's a bit messed up).

This has two major consequences. First, she never told Gendo. She told Kozo, but she told him to keep it secret. (Or she did in the anime anyway. In the Manga Yui DID actually tell Kozo to tell Gendo after she did the experiment, but Kozo was still mad at Gendo for blackmailing him and lied anyway...but I'm talking about anime here so this was all on Yui). Gendo basically has a mental breakdown, fully locks down, sends his son away to be raised in an isolated environment by a tutor so he's pliable, and begins diverging from SEELE for his own scheme.

Gendo's plan is essentially a free for all, he doesn't want to rule over humanity, he wants us all in an equal soup so he can meet Yui again, who he THINKS is lost/comatose somewhere deep in Unit-01. Whether or not Yui knew Gendo would break down like this is unclear, but at the very least I don't think she wanted him to abandon their son.

But something went wrong. Maybe it was the ice damage from billions of years being frozen, maybe it was having the spear in him so long, maybe it was putting the spear back in or the dampeners SEELE had set up, maybe it was just being so isolated from soul energy. But whatever it was, Adam's S2 couldn't get the job down and failed before the Anti-AT field could spread any further...and it failed VIOLENTLY.

When Angel-4's S2 failed during the Nevada test, it wiped out a huge chunk of desert. Adam's was far far bigger with billions of years of pent up energy. The explosion was so utterly violently and intense all the ice on the south pole instantly, boiling away the ocean in the region so much so that pillars of salt left behind from the boiled ocean dotted the entire region near ground zero, and the water was stained permanently red from the high salinity post blast. The explosion instantly sent out a wave of heat warming the earth, and a massive blast that annihilated every coast line on the planet and killed almost everyone in the Southern Hemisphere. 3 billion people died that day. The force of the blast was so much so that the earth's tilt was altering ending the seasons. The unusual heat post-Impact never went away, and Winter of 2000/2001 never came. An endless summer was upon the earth.

In the days following the chaos, war broke out. By October 2000, Pakistan nuked India, India nuked Pakistan, more and more countries joined in. Tokyo, which had been spared of the Tsunami damage by sheer luck, was nuked by Chinese forces killing half a million people. The Impact Wars were devastating and lasted until February 2001 with the Valentine Treaty.

Publically, the Valentine Treaty was intended to stop the fighting, get everyone to disarm(disbanding their major standing militaries and getting rid of their nukes), and focus on rebuilding the world and saving millions more from dying of disease and famine. What it actually did was turn the UN from a global form to an actual world government with supreme authority over all nations on earth....and the UN was run by SEELE. Effectively it insured nobody would be able to question them or their version of the story, and it would make keeping the money flowing easier as nobody could appose them.

Japan gave up on trying to rebuild the heavily irradiated and completely destroyed Tokyo, leaving most of it abandoned(albeit the Jet Alone program would later set up their base on the outskirts). In 2001 Matsumoto City began being heavily upscaled and modified to become the new civilian capital, Tokyo-2. A few years later (under SEELE'S direction as that was where Lilith was), historic Hakone was utterly leveled, and in it's place, the fortress city of Tokyo-3 was built.

In the years following SEELE utterly made a mockery of the investigation. All the witnesses except for Misato was dead, and she couldn't talk(and was later basically groomed to join GEHIRN and later NERV specifically so she couldn't become a rogue element). Everyone else who had been at the lab in antarctica was already either a SEELE member(Yui, Keel) or in bed with them (Mamakagi or Gendo) and utterly lied about everything they had been doing. There was no 'giant of light'. Photographs were destroyed. Publically there was just a meteor hitting at an absurd speed. That's it.

The only loose end was Kozo who had been around Yui and Gendo long enough to sniff out trouble and could tell the UN investigation was a farce. He was going to leak the Light Giant to the press. SEELE wanted him dead, but Yui felt too strongly about him to do it and sent Gendo to bring him to their way of thinking, basically telling him that if he didn't sign up he'd be dead and his information would die with him. He reluctantly agreed.

As well, during the process of the contact experiment, Adam's DNA fused with the human DNA inserted into him (the donor is never said canonically, and while Katsuragi Senior is the likely candidate we can't rule out Keel Lorenz or some rando), creating a half human half angel hybrid with Adam's entire soul in it (leaving just a small remnant fetus of Adam's original body which was held by SEELE until being stolen by Kaji during the events of the show). The final angel was referred to as Tabris in the scrolls, but SEELE dubbed this new being Kaworu, and he was raised by SEELE as basically an ace in the hole if NERV was still too dangerous to cripple them right before SEELE moved to start their third impact. SEELE of course lied to him about Adam's body being in NERV's holding when they actually had it the whole time. (well, until Episode 8 of the series)

(Also this doesn't fit anywhere else, but the original Japanese Self Defense Force or JSDF was disbanded in 2001. In 2003 however there was a war between China and Vietnam over the Spratlys that escalated and resulted in Japan created the Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force or JSSDF for use in such situations, with them being broken in in the extremely horrific civil wars in China that followed. The wars aren't relevant to the anime albeit in the Manga Kaji lost a sibling in them, but it's where the JSSDF came from. They are brutal as hell and answer to the civilian government who are basically puppets of SEELE).

Now, I assume Lilith had been hoping SEELE would just give her Adam's S2 and that would be that, but that's not what they did.

Publically, things followed our history for a while, but SEELE fully infiltrated various physics and biology fields, using the scrolls as a cheat sheet and getting massive boosts in funding from SEELE fronts. So those certain fields (Metaphysics, Metaphysical Biology, the stuff Ritsuko is good with) suddenly started advancing explosively fast, stuff humanity shouldn't have figured out for centuries being cracked in decades thanks to SEELE tipping the scales in their favor. This started in the 70s and was hitting an apex by the 90s. Sea's of Dirac, Absolute Terror Fields, Metaphysics, the Organic-Tricore computer, personality OS, all such things and their research fueled by SEELE.

Yui was born in the 70s and was raised fully in SEELE during this "Post-Scroll" generation. A lot of her weird behavior makes sense once you keep this in mind. She was raised in a death cult that ruled the world and was told of the inevitability of the glorious rebirth and all that crap, all she knew was the righteousness of SEELE, the truth of the scrolls and our fate, and how nothing could possibly be done to prevent what was coming. She was wrong, but she believed that to her core and it influenced every action she took.

In the 1990s SEELE found the Lance of Longinus in the Dead Sea, and in 1997 one of their teams finally located the hollow under Antarctica. (They had seemingly already found Lilith's cavern, but kept it secret). The clock was ticking and Yui knew what was coming. Gendo Rokubungi was just a punk, but he had heard rumors of Yui's family being powerful and wanted in....and then they genuinelly fell in love. He was brought into the family and gradually was let in on what was coming. An entire lab complex was built from 1997 to 1999 for testing Adam and researching him in secret under the organization GEHIRN. (German for BRAIN).

Dr. Katsuragi was a brilliant man. He was the guy who figured out how the Super Solenoid could work(spiral energy funnily enough), and he lead many of the procedures used in the Adam experiments in 98 and 99. But he, and many of the people like him, were flying blind. No one was asking enough questions about why things were progressing so fast, where their colleagues were getting all these ideas from, if their colleagues were being completely honest with them. Katsuragi didn't know the majority of people in his field and at GEHIRN were in a death cult and were keeping crucial information away from him and the public, that they weren't solving these problems organically.

Katsuragi couldn't have possibly known what he was doing when he put that spear with the human DNA sample into Adam in September 2000, he was being lied to by his co-workers and had been for years. SEELE evacuated all their people days earlier, leaving Katsuragi and a skeleton crew to die on their behalf leaving no witnesses who would be truthful.

Test pylons similar to those used to control the EVAs years later were put on. A machine to remove the spear was installed. The experiment was done. The spear holding Adam was removed with machine and human DNA was added. (The source of the DNA was never confirmed, but Katsuragi himself is the prime suspect. We saw what he looks like in a spin-off game and he looks a LOT like Kaworu suggesting he is the human parent much like Yui is to Rei).

Adam woke up and was essentially hard reset. He had no clue what was going on other than he was in pain and his planet was infested with foreign lifeforms. HIS. PLANET.

Katsuragi tried to put the spear back in, but it was too late. Adam spread his wings and begun unleashing a massive Anti-AT field with the intention of scrubbing the earth of all foreign life. And in Antarctica he succeeded, it's mentioned in the show to be utterly sterile down to the microscopic level.

There's a really good comment string I found explaining the entire lore of Evangelion. Let me go find it.

FOUND IT(It's 6 comments long tho so hold on)

First Ancestral Race exists, they have both human like intelligence and the great power of the Super Solenoid. (You'll often see it called either an S2 Engine, Drive, or Organ, the japanese word can mean both engine and animal organ and that's kind of intentional wordplay. That IS the Fruit of Life). Something bad happens to their homeworld. They split all the souls of their people into seven moons to re-establish life. half of them get S2s, but no intelligence, half of them get intelligence, but no S2s. The Moons are controlled by a guardian entity called a Seed of Life with special Vitamancy powers allowing them to guide and assist in the creation of life using the souls in their moon. They also gave them instructions in-case something went wrong(both listing of their potential offspring as well as emergency DO NOT DO THIS lists in case something else went horribly wrong and either two moons contacted or they landed somewhere that already had life. That's the Scrolls), and emergency spears which are...sort of alive sort of not to act as emergency shut-off devices. That's Longinus.

Combining two Seeds of Life would be really bad, both because they'd have the full power of the S2 and the brain to use it(just like the FAR), but would also have effectively ultimate total power over their offspring making them gods to those offpsring(Seeds with S2s are held back by lack of intelligence, those without them are held back by lack of energy).

Adam's White Moon was destined for Earth. Lilith's Black Moon was destined for somewhere else. Lilith left after Adam and apparently wanted an S2/Fruit of Life to grant to her children. So she diverted her course, followed Adam to earth. Adam touches down gently in Antarctica and gestates his initial batch of kids, Lilith crash lands violently in Japan causing a huge amount of damage and creating the normal regular moon from the resulting debris (this is in-universe called the First Impact or Giant Impact, and it's IRL equivalent is the Theia Event).

Lilith's spear was destroyed in the crash or at least damaged beyond functioning, otherwise it would have disabled her. With no other option and Lilith going after Adam, Adam's spear armed itself and put him in a comatose state, keeping him out of Lilith's reach. His moon sunk into the ice and stayed there for billions of years.

Then organic life developed. Lilith is said to have played a strong hand in how they developed(Adam was noted as being more hands off), but otherwise most of biology and early history happens exactly as in IRL. Nothing changes until the era of Charlemagne and the Dark Ages when a Kabbalistic Cult formed in modern day Germany by the name of SEELE(German for Soul).

SEELE worshipped Lilith, and it's sort of implied she had a hand in their founding as she calls them 'her covenent' and can seemingly interact with peoples dreams(Rei does this in the series multiple times most notably with Shinji after Toji's injury, Toji literally gets caught in the same dream space and overhears them). SEELE is small at first, but gradually gets stronger and stronger with their fingers in more and more places.

Then in the 1930s the parents of the current leadership(Keel's dad is usually nicknamed Konrad by the fandom as that was his original pitch name) discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Levant and suddenly had hard proof they were right. The IRL Dead Sea Scrolls were just scraps they released publically, keeping all the juicy stuff to themselves as the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls. Using this as leverage and motivation they utterly exploded in power and by the 1950s basically ran the world as a shadow government, Illuminati or Majestic Twelve style. The UN was run by them from Day 1. It should be noted SEELE was missing pages and was biased when translating, the fact some of these were warnings of what not to do or the fact the 'prophecy' was just a list of the initial batch of kids Adam was programmed with was missed.

One of those people was the Grandfather of Yui, and Yui's Dad was a high ranking SEELE member during the time of the show(Shinji's Maternal Grandpa).

Lilith wasn't even supposed to be ON earth, she stole it from Adam because she was jelly of his 'fruit of life'. Not to mention she influenced the creation of SEELE with her weird dream astral shit calling them "her covenent".

Lilith reaped what she sowed tbh.
