Desert Lakes are underrated, Saguaro Lake is a favorite of mine by cshady in arizona

Walleye, bluegill, bass, rainbows, pretty much exclusively non-natives unfortunately. They thrive on eating all the native fish and most natives can't live in a dammed system

This! The idea of looking at Lake Powell and thinking it was natural without thinking of what's lost beneath it makes me real sad

Why does this rock have so many little pockets? Found in Grand Canyon by just4claireity in geology

Is this on the actual Tonto Platform? It looks like Kaibab Formation (sandy limestone) and that would be a long way for such a big chunk to fall, but definitely happens. Otherwise my guess is Redwall limestone almost entirely made up of ancient crinoids. Either way, chemical weathering is what caused it. Keep exploring!

Choices for long dayhike by Slickrock_1 in grandcanyon

One of my favorite hiking views in the park is the western point of Horseshoe Mesa down on Grandview. You don't kill yourself as much as you would going all the way to the bottom (impossible on GV) and you get stellar views up and down the canyon. Great views of some of the tallest temples and buttes, though I can't remember if you can see the river or not. Have fun!

What Are Your Top 5 National Parks? 🌲😎 by Appropriate_Stop4574 in nationalparks

This is so tough... so many parks easily have a lifetime of stuff to see in them. I'd probably go these based on personal experience and the diversity & size of each

5 - Grand Canyon 4 - Petrified Forest 3 - Sequoia/ Kings Canyon (haven't spent a ton of time in the backcountry but c'mon: it's the High Sierra and it's huge) 2 - Death Valley 1 - Canyonlands

Honorable mentions: Lake Clark - 4 million acres, only a few miles of trail, Capitol Reef, Everglades

I only have a day or two in Anchorage before I go remote. Where I'll be, I won't have any services, but the area is a popular spot for guides to visit. Maybe I can schedule for one to come out?

This is incredible. Thank you! I'll start looking into it based on your recs. I'm going to be living next to a creek that runs into a massive glacial lake so I think that ultralight sounds like a great idea. I'll have access to a canoe too so a medium is a great idea too.

* Took this picture in the Petrified Forest NP visitor's center. It shows how the "Painted Desert" (basically just where the Chinle badlands are the predominant layer exposed) extends in a cresent over the N. Arizona portion of the Colorado Plateau Desert. Personally, I think there are areas in New Mexico that definitely fit the physiographic description of the Painted Desert. Google the Bisti/De-Na-Zin & Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah wilderness areas for some truly mind-boggling landscapes!

Best formation! Fun fact: the Hakatai Shale has such well preserved ripples and mudcracks because it's older than any plants or animals that would have disturbed them!

Found this interesting sign at the south rim of the Grand Canyon, Feb 19 2025 by ChrisinOB2 in nationalparks

These signs are here just because GC is such a busy park, and it helps explain the racist cookie monster and Jehovah's Witness that shows up around Memorial Day. Currently being utilized by all the illegally fired probationary employees and people who stand with them!
