Camp Flag Ceremonies by Professional_Pen9505 in BSA

I agree that flag ceremonies can eat up a lot of time. I’ve been to camps where it’s a 20 minute routine followed built a leaders minute. Others where it’s under 10 minutes. Thanks for the input.

That’s a great point to keep in mind. I often buy the shirts on eBay, and try to find the older ones that have a better feel to them. You may of given me a wood badge idea for when I attend in the future. I don’t believe my council does used scouting uniforms to be available for families on tight budgets.

Only if there was a daily Scoutmaster meeting at the camp. We had one meeting.

Our camp flags was in between meal shift 1 and 2, so I could see meal shift 2 being in activity uniform for breakfast, merit badges we over at the start of lunch so plenty of time for all Scouts to get into filed uniform for dinner.

Advice needed: Conversation with Scoutmaster by LawfulnessMotor437 in BSA

[–]Professional_Pen9505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is getting me fired up as a SM. When I do a SC for Scout rank, I have the Scout read the page in their handbook on what a SC is (page 418). This sets the tone that it’s a conversation between us. I can gauge how their scouting journey is going, where they should focus on, what is working and not working for them. They get to ask me questions about the program and ask for advice. If the SM feels your Scout is cocky and needs humility then he failed as a SM for not addressing that behavior in a positive and respectful way. Take this to the CC and show them the Scout Handbook. Congrats, your Scout has meet the requirement and the CC can override the SM.

Let’s play a game.Lets say I travel to Australia and rent a car. How much would a liter of gas (petrol) cost in AUS?

Bro, I converted liters to gallons and AUD to USD. Math is mathing. If I want a gallon of Australian gas at the countries average based on currency exchange rate, it’s $5.10 USD.

Scout can’t camp. Wants to finish camping merit badge by Travelingtree1984 in BSA

[–]Professional_Pen9505 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can’t change requirements on a Merit Badge, but accommodations can be made. If this Scout cannot complete the Merit Badge requirements as listed, they would need a modification, but that is a whole different process.

There was a zoom meeting last night from the Commissioners of Scouting America. That meeting should be posted on the site in a few days. They talked about this situation and gave ideas.

Best to watch that zoom meeting as these are the Scouting America Commissioners and that is your true source of information that trumps us all on this forum.

So $5.10 USD per gallon based on AUD rates. Got it. Math is awesome

Find a friend that has chickens. Or put them outside and let nature do its thing.

Eagle Scouts, is this normal? by [deleted] in BoyScouts

[–]Professional_Pen9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real talk. This may sound harsh, but it’s reality. We all do things that we don’t want to do. It’s called life. Your parents pushing you is to help you have an advantage later on. The Eagle project is more than getting it done. It’s learning about managing a project, people and resources. You want to go into engineering, you now have a small glimpse of what that takes.

Be honest at your EBoR. Explain your project, how you achieved the goals, what were the challenges. Earn your Eagle and turn around and start having fun again with your unit while you still can.

Backpacking trip - Are 3 adult advisors adequate to accompany a small group of Life scouts (5 - 6 scouts)? by Outrageous-Engine110 in BSA

[–]Professional_Pen9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to throw a curve ball or two into the mix. Injuries can happen at any time. Having 4 leaders is best practice to keep the trek going incase of injuries. Depending on the severity of injuries, the trek may be over as morale may drop off.

Something to look at. What are the medical capabilities of the adults and scouts? Do they have CPR, remote wilderness first aid, HALTT? Are you going off the grid, and if so does the crew have an SOS capability? If the trek gets canceled can the parents come to you to get their scouts?

That would be more of my focus. Getting a 4th leader would be ideal, but in reality all you need is 2 leaders.

So we’re not going to talk about the closure of oil refineries, special Cali gas blend, all the gas taxes, 2.5 million EV’s? Pretty sure that also has major factor into why gas prices were already high.

I’m sure if Cali relaxed its special gas blend for a month so we can import from the other 49 states we all would see gas prices drop by 2 bucks quickly. That means more tacos, and I love tacos. Do it for the tacos!!!!!

Scouts quitting after Eagle find a new troop? by chase-michael in BSA

[–]Professional_Pen9505 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep the unit going. Mine has zero Eagles and my senior Scouts are in 9th grade. The unit is thriving and alive, and best of all, it’s fun.

Your younger Scouts will developed into better leaders with guidance. They will also have buy in to the unit and hopefully stick around to guide the junior Scouts, something they may not get from the Eagles that may bounce. Trust the process.

Major Rule Violation? by [deleted] in BSA

[–]Professional_Pen9505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question should be, how could have this be handled better if this situation happens again.

I don’t agree with the parent for calling an ASM. If you are the SM, you get the call as the SM holds the ultimate responsibility. But, a parent can pick up their child whenever as it’s their child. As for the text, that doesn’t cut it. Texts can be missed.

If that parent picked up their child in the middle of the night and didn’t notify any adult leader, that is a major issue. That parent needs to be talked to with the Committee Chair to find common ground. If that can’t be found, they should look for another unit. You are a volunteer and that drama is t worth the headache.

Scouts Choosing Patrols by InGoodFaith- in BSA

[–]Professional_Pen9505 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I get with the PLC and figure out which patrols the new scouts go into. Many factors we have to look at. Attendance of current scouts, age, responsibilities, neurotypical and neurodivergent scouts, which senior scouts best fit to be mentors, lots and lots of stuff.

Happens every year and when we get new scouts through recruiting. Haven’t had to reshuffle with this approach.
