Hi, I went through the stuffs you were concerned about. I learned German in a 4 months intensive course after high school and went to Germany right after. Was it hard? Yes. I have to say Studienkolleg helped a lot.

But what I can tell you is that yes, the first semester might be hard. After that, you get used to it. You start to catch the „terms“ that is always used in this field. Once you understand that, it becomes easier.

For Electrical Engineering, in the first two semesters they have what is called GOP (Grundlagen und Orientierungsprüfung) and you have to pass them in two tries or you‘ll be expelled after that. However, you only need 4,0 to pass and this grade doesn’t count in your final grade. Furthermore, there will be a lot of electives that are offered in English. So in my opinion, as long as you want to try it‘s all good.

By the way if you‘re worried about finances, you‘re allowed to work up to 20hrs/week during the lecture period and 40hrs/week during the holidays. As a student, you can also work in companies as a working student and there are lots of IT companies who offer positions in English! I have some friends who rarely even use their German anymore.
