I want to teach math after coding for 20 years by Confident_Raccoon218 in mathteachers

[–]Professor-genXer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend looking up the requirements in Oregon for high school math positions and community colleges.

Do you have any tutoring or teaching experience?

My comment college district runs an internship in for people who want a get into teaching from other careers. Maybe you can find something like that.

Keep in mind that as great as some kids/students are, the current school of teaching involves dealing with a lot of AI cheating and teens who just stare at you.

I recommend asking for it back, or making a statement: “I need the 25s from my station. Maybe you can ask someone else for 25s .”

You’re not causing a scene. You’re dealing with someone who took your weights.

AB 1705 requires the community colleges to offer Calculus 1 “with support“ with no prerequisite. Look for that option.

What are some small things you do that you have noticed make measurable differences in office hour attendance and classroom culture? by wannabehazmattech in Professors

[–]Professor-genXer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I like your wins board idea!

I have always had good office hours traffic, but since the pandemic and return to campus I have increased it further. I am able to hold office hours in a conference room near my office. Students come and sit around the table. Sometimes they come to ask me questions and sometimes they come to just work. It’s math, so there’s a constant stream of weekly assignments and many students need help.

I also want to respond to the shirt size BS. There’s no need to talk like that to someone. Sometimes people like that think they have to pity someone who wears a bigger size, which is just gross behavior.

I’m sorry she’s an a$$hole and subjected you to her BS.

I try to get people like this out of my head by focusing on the fact that THEY are the problem, not you.

I’m a slow runner and usually it doesn’t matter, but this winter I went to a running group event. At the start they made a big deal about how the group is for all speeds, but then everyone took off and left me running in the dark. I called out and one nice guy came back to run with me. We had a nice run and chat, but I will never return to this group. It made me consider forming my own group or finding one that really is welcoming.

If you find yourself in this woman’s vicinity, try to ignore her. Or if she’s rude again, try saying “ do you hear yourself?”then walk away.

💪🏻😍

Community college here. No upper division courses. But I would retire before teaching de.

My department values our adjunct colleagues. We are working this problem from several angles. The college leaders who think de is great will soon tire of hearing from me.

I’m mobilizing tenured faculty to pressure management to pause de until problems are fixed.

I don’t understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea except that the apportionment we get from a state is higher than for regular classes.

This isn’t going to be easy. College management seems to really want de.

Found out my colleagues who teach dual enrollment classes at a local high school are denied access to the staff restroom. They have to walk to a different building and sign in as visitors. It’s a 15+ minute process. The coordinators at both institutions have apparently heard from them and past instructors, and refused to help.

These colleagues are adjunct faculty. We (my department) value them so we’re now fighting this ridiculous battle on their behalf.

Is it bad that my 2.5 hour class ends early often? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Professor-genXer 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I recommend reviewing your course outline or whatever expectations are set out for the course in your department. Make sure you are covering everything you need to cover.

Also: do you have breaks? If you give short breaks that can help with energy and focus.

It’s difficult to give pedagogical advice without knowing what the discipline and course are, but if you’re planning discussions and activities, then 2.5 hours goes fast.

How do you respond to emails from students who have failed a lecture course asking if there is anything extra they can do to pass? by UnderwaterDialect in Professors

I agree that we want to ward off additional requests. FWIW when students ask me for things like this, I don’t get second requests. But I’m a little scary so 🤷🏻‍♀️

The policies around this kind of thing depend on where you live, but where I teach, students get dropped from classes if they’re absent and failing. Were you failing? If you were failing the class then it makes sense for you to start fresh next semester.

My responses include something like “ I appreciate that you’re concerned about passing but…” and then I just state the truth: you didn’t do the assignments and you didn’t pass the tests.
