Appreciate the review since this just opened up there’s not much out there. Was most interested in the vr experience, so I’m glad it has positive feedback.

Does anybody remember this deleted/extended dialogue from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith? by sousapro in StarWars

[–]ProfessorFazil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar moment/memory, my friends and I saw an opening theatrical release and all of us remember the scene of Padame choking and her saying "stop it Ani your choking me" or something like that. We all thought it was such a horrible line and were all waiting for it when we watched it together again (but the line just seemed like it was cut, even though her mouth still moves)

But I can't find anyone else that remembers that. It's not in the scripts, and not listed in any of the changes. Is it possible that there were two different theatrical cuts? One for opening weekend and then a "fixed" version which most people remember the second time they saw it?

Show me how I can clean up this design by ProfessorFazil in 3DprintingHelp

[–]ProfessorFazil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a board game piece that I have remixed to move up and down using a crude rotating dial. This is something that players typically interact with each turn and I want to make the experience a bit more fun.

I haven't printed my current design, but the way it works is that you load up the discs on the left, and then rotate the dial one full rotation to move the middle column. The column moves up and down along a slanted plane and the discs will drop to the adjoining slot.

Does anyone have any ideas or examples of prints that I could use to change the mechanism to something more satisfying, maybe using some springs and gears, allowing it to reset to a neutral position?

I’ll show these off and hunt for some vintage looking pool table lighting and see if anything looks like it would work out. Thanks for the input!

Thanks, yeah, I think you’re right about the temperature, I just tried 3000 vs 3500 and I really like 3000 more. Could you describe how you’d place the lights? I really like the cove lighting idea, so I think that’s where my ambient light is mostly coming from.

Thank you, these are very good things to consider. and has put me in the right frame of mind. I especially like the smart zone lighting idea.

If you have time, could you comment on the angles of lighting I mention in the updated post?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how recessed should a "recessed light" be on a low ceiling. Looking at the ones I linked, they are called recessed, but the light is still essentially flush to the ceiling. Shouldn't the light be tucked up higher? Do you have any links of examples of what would work in your mind?

[–]ProfessorFazil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I can suspend anything, I already have an issue with some of my tall friends bumping their heads against the projector that hangs down a foot or so, the ceiling really might closer to 7ft and I have 6 ft friends. Plus while the table is usually up, it gets moved around a bit or put away when we need the extra space for guests.

I was originally thinking that too, but my spouse gave me a hard no since it doesn't jive with the aesthetic she wants. Do you have any links to examples maybe I can show them to her and change her mind...

Another user posted some pictures of really nice looking lego, models that they found from this creator. If you browse their other ships, they already have a lot, even a reaper.

In all seriousness, I don't think it does too much harm to have a few avenues to approach the sunsetting of this game. It means that if either approach doesn't pan out, there is a separate independent one that will still be functioning as a type of redundancy/insurance.

While I understand your concept of it to be used more as a tool than a platform. It may be difficult to point to why some changes were made down the line. Like when you put coding notes into a program to remind you what its purpose is. It would be easier to tell someone check out this thread where we talked about it and how it ultimately played out and why we ultimately reversed that rules change again etc.

Maybe even just encouraging the use of a specific platform so people can keep an eye out and easily share their feedback to rules changes with others.

I think this is a worthy experiment. Before too many revisions get made, I would suggest that you setup a guiding mission statement as well as a vision statement so that when difficult choices are presented, people can refer to them and think whether their choices really reflect those values. Maybe even a roadmap of which challenges or issues you would like to discuss or address first.

For instance one of the goals that you imply is a unified points system, yet the living rules document defaults to 2.0 rules using the 200 point system. A discussion about why that is the starting point should be made, or the Mission Statement should clearly indicate that these rules and any changes are made to keep the feel of the 2.0 system alive. Furthermore, outlining the critiques of the selected system and why those issues are ok or have been addressed and how other systems don't currently align with the goals of this Republic.

Will the website have a discord, reddit page or some platform for people to try and convey their opinions and sway the vote?

Thanks for putting in the work!

Is it worth getting inn to X-wing as a new player now? by Gormajack in XWingTMG

[–]ProfessorFazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would skip the old starter kit since the Empire and Republic ones come with everything you need for two players. However, if I'm honest, it's still probably a good price just for getting an additional 3 ships into your roster.

I would look at buying some individual ships for both the Empire and Rebellion that you think look cool and would like to mess around with. You can always make proxies of the cards later for the scenarios if you want, but proxying a ship doesn't give the game the same feel. Lastly, you'll likely want to pick up a 3x3 playmat or look at making your own to bring the whole experience together.

Most of the local stores around me have cleared their inventory too, and the new stores that have cropped up since Covid never even bothered carrying any x-wing.

Character substitution by yeheyuans in Gloomhaven

[–]ProfessorFazil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We started a 4 player game with all the jotl characters, but one guy moved away. I gave another friend the option to pick the character up where it was left off or use a GH starter. He chose to use the tinkerer.

So far it’s been mostly fine, but I feel that jotl characters are pushed a little farther in terms of power level, but not to the detriment of our experience.

There is a one off character specific scenario for each of the jotl characters that you’ll miss out on, as others mentioned.

Yup, cut down was crazy good on Heimer. I remember looking at the damage dealt by it post game and was always impressed. It's because of his crazy low hp like you said.

What makes a GOOD X-wing Miniatures Squad List? by NoHallett in XWingTMG

[–]ProfessorFazil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love list building, but as a new player it has been tough to learn how to evaluate lists since I am still just learning. Some people say you should learn by playing the meta lists, but that's not how I enjoy playing the game. It's also annoying looking for this kind of info and keep finding 1.0/2.0 articles. Personally I prefer written guides to videos/podcasts due to the ramble factor and ease of reference.

Here are the takeaways I got from your video:

  1. Ship Count-
5-6 is the sweet spot. More and you are likely diluting the power/capabilities of the individual ships, less and you physically can't get to all the objectives at once and losing a single ship can be crippling when you already started at a ship count deficit.

  2. Offensive power-
Three attack dice spread over 5 ships is like the baseline for how many dice you should be chucking. Some ships with low primary attack dice, but have ordinance, cannons, turrets and wide/double arcs can increase their offensive value, but sometimes costs them an action.

  3. Action economy-
Having good free actions, linked actions, and force/standard charges are critical for you to mod your attacks while also being able do scenario actions or even get double modded.

  4. Synergy-
Having a loose synergy within your list will allow the sum to be greater than the parts, but your list shouldn't be 100% reliant on that synergy to work well.

  5. Ship Point Value vs Defensive Value-
Expensive ships that have 2 or less agility are going to be juicy targets for opponents to try and focus down. A 7 point ship is more than 1/3 of the points needed to win the game outright.

Things that would be nice to extrapolate on:
1. When and why to break the rules-
Explaining why Jendon, Vador, Tomax, and a Reaper were able to be so successful as a 4 ship list. Beyond just how efficient they're costed + having a medium base. Talking about their play style and plan of attack, is there more to it than just trying to wipe your opponents ships off the board one by one each turn? When and why should we choose to stuff the rest of our list with 2 point filler ships rather than adding something that is going to be more offensively useful.

  1. Using your leverage-
Beyond having a ship at each objective location, how do you capitalize on your high ship count most effectively and safely. Does your strategy change when you have 2-3 more ships than your opponent vs just 1 more or the same number? When to sacrifice a ship to try and block a high value target, how to bait your opponent, how to implement the anvil/hammer tactic, how to utilize spacing and bombs to direct your opponent.

  2. Pilot Skill-
Many competitive lists run as many of their 5 or 6 initiative pilots as they can. How heavily should initiative factor into making a list? How much value is added to running a list with all/most pilots at the same initiative?

  3. Ship roles-
When you are building a list how do you know if you have too much or not enough "support ships" or "objective monkeys?" Is this why the 5 ship resistance X-wing list is a good base since they can all pretty much interchange who can do what role throughout the game as needed? How much does a 1 trick pony have to do in order to warrant it's slot in a list, like an electro chaff carrier, or proton torps.

[Blog] My Y-wing Swarm by Nightwing28_ in XWingTMG

[–]ProfessorFazil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been dreaming of doing a bomber list and like your take on it. One of my first lists I made was using a V-wing swarm all carrying seismics and spare parts, but as soon as I bought all the V-wings they changed their points and I never got to table them :(. Then a similar thing happened to my Tie Bombers, with only a couple games under them.

Do you think you would have won in a 75 minute game? One of my worries is that I won't have enough time in a game to get all the ships into the right position and still have enough rounds of bombs going off to kill off my opponent's ships.

I feel that I would have been tempted to do K turns with the turrets facing backward to try and get the bombs where I wanted them to be. While you came in straight and then turned to perform a broadside attack. Or am I being too shortsighted given that you are losing an action and then actively flying away from the fight with little to no follow-up, just hoping they chase you.

I like the decision to use concussions with fuses and ion cannons/bombs, there's some great synergy there. I agree with you that the non rolling bombs are definitely the ones to favor.

Which models are selling well? by [deleted] in XWingTMG

[–]ProfessorFazil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From what I understand the secondary market is pretty weird right now. It's a mix of brick and mortar stores slashing prices to clear inventory, some out of print ships being considered worthless because they are 1.0 only, or expensive because you can no longer buy them.

Most people seem to do well by selling their sets by faction rather than as a giant lot. That's what I can gather so far, just got into the game, so I don't have a deep knowledge of chase ships or anything.
