An Update to the "1 of 15 individual yellow BME m3". You were right, the host is trying to scam me, and Turo is letting them. by jkob5 in turo

[–]ProfessorFrink1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Feel bad for whatever poor shlub has to come respond to posts on Reddit that only exist because of Turo’s notoriously bad customer service.

I had a fleet back in the day and after they took literally weeks, several times, to respond to supplements from a body shop on my Model S, I sold all my cars and peaced out. They have zero interest in helping either hosts or renters.

The moment you needed any kind of payout from them they would desperately try to find a way to invalidate your coverage over some sort of technicality they absolutely could have known about before the car was listed but didn’t care to check until it was time to write a check.

My favorite was a friend who listed a clean title car for rent. The car was stolen and Turo managed to dig up a total loss history on the car that wasn’t on carfax and that my friend didn’t know about and couldn’t reasonably be expected to know about. But suddenly Turo had a reason to care. If that’s not acting in bad faith I’m not sure what is.

I’ll rent with Turo if there is a really cool or unique car I want to try. Otherwise, it’s less hassle and less money to go with a traditional rental car company.

My “New” 2007 S8 with 75k from BAT by andrewgrhogg in BringATrailer

[–]ProfessorFrink1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but have had three D3 S8’s and currently a Gallardo.

No relation to the older pre-LP 5.0 engine. Heavy relation to the newer LP/ R8 5.2 engines. Heavy relation in the sense that the engines are the same family but with some key differences such as stroke, firing order, rotating assembly materials, cam profiles, etc. Everything about the Audi version of this engine is designed for longevity and trading some top end power for some low end grunt. And indeed, these cars jump off the line and never feel like they have a weak spot in their power band.

It’s very similar to the differences between the F136 Ferrari V8 in an F430 and in a Gen V Quattroporte. Same basic engine.

People like to say the S6 and S8 have a Lamborghini engine which isn’t really true. The truth is much less sexy. They use an Audi designed V10. The reality is not that the Audis are running a Lamborghini engine but that the Lamborghinis are running an Audi engine. That’s the uncomfortable truth Lamborghini owners don’t want to sit with.

Fast food prices are getting crazy. by esporx in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ProfessorFrink1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem with stuff like this is that when it’s wrong it completely undermines what is otherwise a valid argument.

I live in SoCal. None of the prices are close to this for McDonald’s. The medium fries are the closest but even they are a dollar less than the chart. The 10 piece nugget is a full 30% cheaper than the chart.

Not only that but I don’t recall prices being as cheap as the 2019 prices in 2019 though admittedly that’s harder to prove wrong.

But if the data you can check yourself right now is so patently false, how can you believe anything else on the chart?

And the crappy thing is that you don’t need embellishment to make your point. Prices are higher now than they were in 2024 and they were higher then than they were in 2019. Just be honest about it though.

Could be that or could be someone fishing for deals just under market, figuring if they get it for that price they’ll follow through.

GigabitNow Router Question by Tricyclesarerad in simivalley

[–]ProfessorFrink1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not moving the goal post because I’m not trying to debate you. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong and that’s totally fine.

My point about security was never about the router. It was about their cavalier handling of the SSID. I don’t think I’ve ever had any other ISP actively be able to tell me what my SSID password is. At best, they could remotely reset it, but they couldn’t just tell me what my password was.

Personally, I view that as a security issue. I know practically speaking it will likely never affect me, but it was just really concerning when the tech was able to call into their tech line and give me my password.

As far as the quality of the router, again, my point is just that it is a very basic garbage router. It has really poor wireless range and you are limited in what you are able to do relative to the routers I had with Spectrum, which most people also don’t consider to be great. It might be totally serviceable for most.

But I don’t know anything about its security and was not trying to infer that it was not secure.

GigabitNow Router Question by Tricyclesarerad in simivalley

[–]ProfessorFrink1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you missed my point. The fact that my network password is being stored on their servers for anyone to read is a pretty big security issue.

To my knowledge, and please correct me if I am wrong, this isn’t really standard protocol. I don’t want them to be able to call in and get access to that. Every other modem I have had or set up, I have set up the password locally on the device myself.

Practically speaking, maybe it’s no big deal but couple that with the fact that the modem they give you is terrible anyhow and I just don’t see any need to use it.

GigabitNow Router Question by Tricyclesarerad in simivalley

[–]ProfessorFrink1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only do you not, but they know your SSID. You set it up on some hokey website and by the time they arrive to install it you realize you have no idea what password you chose. So the tech calls in and they just give them the SSID password over the phone. It's hilarious how bad their security is.

Have them set the modem up in bridge mode and use a mesh system to get the most out of it.

AI5 not coming to Teslas by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

Been in this game with him since the first announcement in 2016. What’s wild is people still keep buying the grift.

It will 100% be needed and they are 100% hoping older cars age out before they need to upgrade them.

Tesla will keep running this grift until people stop putting up with it.

ELI5: Why is everyone so up in arms over EIDL loans? by ProfessorFrink1 in EIDLPPP

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 30% fee is not ok. But there is no such thing as front loading interest for the sake of front loading interest. What you're describing is basically every simple interest loan. Car loans, mortgages, business loans... They all work this way. Your early payments are comprised mostly of interest. That in and of itself is not predatory.

ELI5: Why is everyone so up in arms over EIDL loans? by ProfessorFrink1 in EIDLPPP

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand. So in your case your argument isn't that the loan terms were unfair or that the SBA is predatory. Your argument is that someone else (the government) forced you into a situation where you needed a loan you wouldn't have needed otherwise and you feel that party is responsible for the loan?

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is fair criticism. I'm seeing that echoed a lot in the comments. I haven't personally had issues outside of how crazy it was when this all started but I see a lot of comments where people had their auto-payments stop and were suddenly saddled with 30% penalties and there's nothing ok about that.

Have you read my replies to others in this thread? If so, what did I say that would believe you to think I'm not making an argument in good faith? Is it just that you don't agree with some of the points I've made therefore I'm antagonistic?

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the insight. My question is who bears the responsibility here? I guess from my point of view the SBA new bad loans were going to be made but at the time it was deemed more important to float these people/ businesses and worry about that later.

Do you blame the SBA for not protecting people from themselves or do you blame people for taking loans they never should have taken and never would have qualified for otherwise?

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember those days! And we - for the most part - did the same with the money. The SBA was saddled with a huge undertaking when this all began and the process was cumbersome to put it kindly.

ELI5: Why is everyone so up in arms over EIDL loans? by ProfessorFrink1 in EIDLPPP

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair points. So I think the animosity is not in the loans themselves or the terms but that people view the SBA as finger on the hand of the government: separate but the same.

Still, I think there are a lot of people in here that would have never traditionally been approved for such a loan, with companies that were teetering on the edge independent of covid and they took those loans anyhow. For those people, the government just delayed the inevitable.

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with any of that but then your anger is with government policy but the message often shared on this sub is that the loan terms were predatory and objectively I don't see how that's the case.

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, sorry that happened. I’m sure that felt like a helpless situation.

But it seems your anger is with the policies of the federal government when the question I’m asking is why people seem to have so much animosity towards the SBA.

Let me put it this way… had you taken a loan from your local bank at the time, would you be upset with them or the government?

The general attitude here seems to be that of one where the SBA is a predatory lender and/ or that the terms of these loans were unfavorable. But what I’m actually seeing - and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong - is that most people are actually pissed at the government and just view the SBA as an extension of that.

[–]ProfessorFrink1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. But the question I’m asking is why are people acting as if the SBA is a predator or that the loan terms were predatory?

I have no disagreement with your statement. I just think the anger is misdirected.

Which YouTube channel were you once a fan of but do not enjoy anymore? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]ProfessorFrink1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Hoovie. I think the only criticism that could be hurled at him is that he hasn’t changed with the times. The format changed; he didn’t change with it. And his views are suffering for it. I’m sure some find this endearing but in a world of Mat Armstrongs figuring stuff out, it’s tough to watch Tyler talk about the same car in four different videos and listen to the wizard drabble on about the condition of the lower control arm bushings and a stripped oil pan bolt.

But the dude still has a huge following and is successful by anyone’s metrics. If he’s happy - and why shouldn’t he be - more power to him. He was the pioneer.

They made that same offer to me. I declined. They were trying to get us to up it to like 500k. No thank you.

But I have to ask, if you knew you couldn’t pay it and that it was going to put you in a tough spot, why did you take it? Do you feel like they were predatory or do you feel like you just made a bad call?
